Well the chaos of this morning translated into a favorable review of my work. I'm still not used to all the positive feedback I get at this job. Throughout my career to this point I've become used to criticism (not always deserved) and ridiculous demands.

Thanks. It won't always be roses and sunshine but I'm trying to welcome the praise.

Certainly beats being pulled into the office to be told that my genuine effort wasn't enough, disregarding the fact that a) my wife was pregnant with our first child, b) my dog had just had major knee surgery, c) a 70-yr-old man had backed into my car in a parking lot, d) my wife's grandfather was gravely ill, and e) my aunt was on her deathbed. I was told "suck it up and don't bring that shit to work."

*sigh* Better off not digging up 6 year old demons, but it does feel better to be on this side of things.

When I read what you type, it makes me think about how I handle myself as a manager.  I always point out when I see something good.  Not saying anything positive does not help to get the best out of the employees.  When I do criticize, I say it to say, "I think you would be safer doing it this way" or "We want you to lift it this way.  We care about your safety" ect...

I miss cigars.  I some know on this forum.  My mom passed away from Lung cancer in 2011.  I made a promise to her when she was in the hospital that I would give up cigars.  I never smoked cigarettes.  My mom as a 2 pack a day smoker and my dad 3 packs a day.  So as much as I crave a cigar, I made a promise.

I would like to go back to cigars or pipes, but when Mrs. C. smokes, cigarettes are over much faster.  Me going back to cigars or pipes would all but guarantee I'd be back to smoking, so it's an absolute can-not-go-zone for me.

That's a very good approach to take. As a manager I try the same things; I always like "catching them doing something good" and if I find a problem, I try to suggest a solution as opposed to simply saying "you're wrong." I have definitely learned what NOT to do as a manager from the people who had been above me. The boss to whom I referred in my previous post loved trotting out the old "it's a design question, you figure it out." Almost as if he knew the "the answer" but it was up to me to figure it out, because if I was worth my salt, I'd know it. He's the type of person that could look at a professional logo designed by a multi-million dollar ad agency for a campaign that was worth multiple millions of dollars and say, "that sucks so bad, it's so obvious, can't believe they make that while we're doing this and not making that kind of money." My blood actually starts to curdle remembering it.

It you degrade all the time an employee will tune you out or just not work at a level they should because they feel unwanted.  I also only yell when needed as a last resort.  It sends a message that, "Wow, he never yells".  I've only had to do it a few times in 5 years.

Many moons ago I was a cigarette smoker. Nothing major and I gave them up about 20 years ago. I do love a cigar tho. Have for years. Give me a cigar and a port wine and in heaven. I  have about 2 a week. depending on my schedule. I never smoke in my house.

My father passed 2 years ago from lung cancer and was never a smoker. Worked construction.
Guess the way I look at it is in moderation it is all good. As with all in life..........except porn stars. cant get enough of them

I had many cigars that I can't remember.  The only one I had that I could remember (because I got them several times) was the Cusano Double Connecticut.  Not bad.
