you should check the freak folk album by Comus. a few Opeth songs directly use that bands lyrics as song titles and other lyrics - and Baying of the Hounds is one of them

Has anyone caught a show with the new drummer?

I saw them with the interim drummer in late 2021 I think. Not sure if it was the drummer's fault at all, but the band's energy was so low and the tempos were slowed down so much that it was just not a fun time for me, so I'm not even sure if I want to go to a show this tour. Plus I don't need to see them play Deliverance for the ten billionth time.

They headlined Mission prior to that by themselves in 2020.

I assume a new album has to be imminent. Usually they release around September so the timing is right. They only play a few new songs on tour though so it doesn't make that much of a difference.

Oooh OK, thanks for the clarification. As far as Opeth is concerned, I only really keep up with Mikael. The other members rotate in/out too much and/or don't make enough of an impact on Opeth's music for me to notice or track

I've never really gotten this opinion. He's a good drummer for sure, but to me he's kinda just there. Definitely not flashy and his grooves feel pretty standard to me.

I'm in the same boat as emtee, Lopez has some of my favorite playing on the Opeth albums. I've watched Lamentations so many times, he's an absolute joy to watch. He's got a certain type of rhythm when he's playing. I also love the way his drums sound on all his albums.

This not a diss on Axe as he's absolutely amazing as well, but I have a huge soft spot for Lopez.

Lindgren played very tasteful solos while Fredrik, imo, mostly shreds.

I didn't expect it to work, but I like the contrast for them.  Both Lindgren and Akerfeldt were more of "feel" players, and while Lindgren was fine, Akerfeldt is probably my favorite guitarist, so Lindgren didn't fare as comparably.  Akesson gives them a whole different dimension, which is surprisingly enjoyable.

It's kind of the opposite with Lopez.  Their later drummers (mostly thinking about Axenrot, but it could also apply to Karppinen and Väyrynen) are choppier, but Lopez had an irreplaceable touch to me.  Then again, while I like his playing with Soen, it doesn't feel quite the same either, so maybe it's just some ineffable turn of the century magical chemistry going on.

Lindgren and Lopez both leaving ended the Opeth I loved. Watershed is good but everything after that is not for me.

I get why both were replaced - Lopez because of his personal struggles and it probably made things easier not to work around his anxiety issues. With Lindgren I know Mikael said he stopped contributing riffs towards the end which made him more of a passenger in the band towards the end. So I get why they would replace both but the 'latin grooves' of Lopez playing as well as Lindgren's guitar playing (which felt more Opeth-y) was replaced with 2 more technical players (imo) but part of that core sound just got lost. I prefer Watershed to anything they have made since then, but I also would rank their first 8 albums as my top8 Opeth albums.

But considering the direction Mikael took the band in with Heritage, I do think that even if Lopez and Lindgren had stayed on, it's not unlikely the band would have ended up somewhere similar (although slightly different because of 2 different musicians) so I think Opeth were probably destined for 70s retro prog no matter what. But I do adore everything up to Watershed and these days I get my Opeth fix from bands like Wilderun. Veil of Imagination is my nr1 "best Opeth album that's not an Opeth album" and I vibe with it really hard.

Never heard of Wilderun before. Checked out the album you mentioned and yeah, they really picked right up where Opeth left off. Pretty good stuff.

Wilderun is a great band - and incredibly nice guys too, based on some (limited) online interaction around the time their last album was released.

I have a slight preference for Sleep at the Edge of the Earth (the album prior to Veil of Imagination). That one, too, has Opeth-ian moments, and it's just all-around great, with fantastic melodies and riffage.

Their most recent one, Epigone, was one of my favorites of 2022. In a way, it's a good mix of Sleep...and Veil. It's maybe more of a slow-burner, but it's absolutely worth spending time with.

But, yeah, regardless of direct musical comparisons, I would agree that they share the adventurous spirit of pre-prog Opeth. Definitely more symphonic, though.

They posted a profile pic update on their facebook page, it looks somewhat in line with the cover
plus a reissue of Storm Corrosion with a Dolby Atmos mix and a live version of Drag Ropes.

Storm Corrosion, the highly revered 2012 collaboration between two of the leading figures in contemporary progressive music, Steven Wilson and Mikael Åkerfeldt (Opeth ), is to be reissued on 27 September via @kscopemusic on coloured vinyl LP in a gatefold sleeve, CD and Blu Ray which features a new Dolby Atmos mix of the original album's 6 tracks by Steven Wilson, plus high resolution stereo and 5.1 DTS-HD surround sound mixes and instrumental mixes of each track, a mini documentary plus more.

 This new 2024 edition of 'Storm Corrosion' features a bonus track "Drag Ropes Live" recorded when Mikael guested with Steven and his band at London's Royal Albert Hall in September 2015, the only song they have performed live to date.


The duo's 2012 collaboration as Storm Corrosion exists in its own psychedelic lane of peculiarity, throwing listeners into a world of haunting and unsettling ambience like no other, slated as ""an unequivocal triumph" by The Guardian and "music that is groundbreakingly extreme in its own right ... utterly brilliant" by Prog Magazine
