Prog/Metal Vocal Showdown #12: Matos vs Alder
« on: April 29, 2014, 07:15:47 AM »
Hopefully this stirs a little more interest and discussion.

Ray Alder's voice took me a long - LONG - time to appreciate.  I still don't 'get' some of the early FW stuff, but really love his work with Redemption.  Matos is an absolute beast with Angra (I prefer his era to Edu's... but not by a whole lot), and delivers an unreal performance on The Flying Opera.  I don't know his other works, but have no doubt he delivers there too.

I'll take Matos' range over Alder's grittiness.

I'll go Matos  - just - for his versatility but when he sucks on the helium too hard I can find him quite annoying.  On balance though he wins.

Nice to know "who da fuq" I'm voting on this round   ;D

You do know John Arch sang on the first three FW albums, right?

Who the fuck are you, noob, to ask me what I might and might not know???  I recognize the sig, but your avatar and username don't match.   ;D

And to answer your question, yeah I do recall that now that you mention it.  It isn't the vocals (one way or the other) that stop me from 'getting' FW, it's the overall vibe, and as such I've never really listened to them much to know how I feel about Alder's contributions.

Matos. Smooth as silk that voice.
Alder is ok too so a close one.
I'm not a huge fan of either singer's main bands, more a casual fan, but matos rules in Avantasia and I quite like the Matos/Paeth Virgo album, though its very laid back.

I prefer Alder, but that's probably got more to do with the bands he's sung in.

Alder, but only in Redemption. Not a fan of Fates Warning. Haven't heard any Angra with Matos, but the revered Temple of Shadows sounded really generic to me, so I don't think I'll bother with the old stuff.

A mistake to extrapolate that I reckon ...............I don't rate Temple of Shadows all that high but think Angels Cry (and to a lesser extent Holy Land) are brilliant.

Yeah, Angels Cry is at least worth a listen.  Temple of Shadows is with Edu also.
