Personally, I have no issues with Syme's style or use of stock images. The only thing that makes me less than happy with his artwork is when he makes blatant mistakes. For example, the misalignment of the ball on the Octavarium art bothers me. However, I like the idea for that art, just not that particular execution.

Well, I don't mind when he uses a mix of elements of stock images, you know? Some few pieces... But I don't like when he uses a big(ger :neverusethis:) picture with only a few alterations, which I'm assuming will be the Majesty logo unless there will be something else in the sky.

I understand. I disagree (since this is precisely the type of thing for which stock photos exist), but I understand.

It just occurred to me what nice piece of information they could give us that is not more artwork or more music: Songwriting credits, particularly lyric writing credits.

If the artwork represented the amount of effort that went into the music then Hugh Syme and AX7 would be a perfect match.

In all seriousness though, that's an incredibly lazy piece of work, even by Symes' standards.

Even though I was defending Syme a half page ago, I'm going to have to agree. The angle at which it is being projected out of the window makes no sense compared to the way it appears on the clouds.

yeah, I guess Syme didn't pay attention in physics during highschool...

I still kinda dig the theme of this though, cause of my inner love for everything Batman.

"Unfortunately the immutable laws of physics contradict the whole premise of [Syme's artwork]..."

Why not just hide the light source behind some skyscrapers in a skyline composition that is more flat instead of dealing with perspectives. Or is that too blatant a mimicry of Batman?

More lazy work, but not unexpected.
Executed better, I would have taken something like that (as a general idea) for the cover tbh.

Do you guys think that MP may have also acted as quality control? It seems there've been far more errors now with artwork than there was prior to his departure. Not trying to start anything, just thinking.

That's what I was trying to say one page ago! :D

Well, I was talking more about the fact that according to angle of the beam coming out of the projector, the light is moving to the left and toward the front, but the way the Majesty symbol is angled on the clouds it looks like it would had the light been moving left and toward the back (essentially the beam makes it seem like the logo is between the projector and the viewer, but the logo makes it seem like the projector is between the logo and the viewer).

But yeah, what you were pointing out also makes utterly no sense.

Oh Hugh.

Yes, he did rush those covers :neverusethis:
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

I guess he had to work harder in those days. The Grace Under Pressure album cover is a thing of beauty and the best thing he's ever done. That seems a long time ago.
it's lazy, sloppy stuff these days though.
Find someone hungry for the next cover ffs.

Even though I was defending Syme a half page ago, I'm going to have to agree. The angle at which it is being projected out of the window makes no sense compared to the way it appears on the clouds.

But that's how it would look in real life. I agree that the light source shouldn't be both bright like it's shining in your eyes and at the same time pointing somewhere else. But as for how it's on the clouds, that's fine. The "surface" of the clouds aren't going to be exactly perpendicular to the beam. The angle of the symbol is completely dependent on the geometry of the cloud and independent of the angle of the beam.

The picture is still kind of lazy. I just want the criticism to go where it's most deserved.

So I've thought the criticism of the images up to this point has been way overblown and actually quite liked it all but this bat symbol thing is wayyyy too cheesy for my tastes.

It'd be different if it were a bunch of spotlights like it was a big premiere but beckoning a specific comic book character is a little much.

With that said, this doesn't affect much of anything and I'm still pumped for the album.  One weird piece of somewhat lazy artwork based on a cheesy concept is nothing.
