Steve Vai might be a nice choice also.

He probably wouldn't do it, but it would be sick.

Ok, so who would be in that DT-cover band lineup?

inb4 Kevin Moore on keys.

Surely not, he disliked working with KM on OSI so I don't think he'd ever call Kevin up....

I think Chad was joking ;)

Derek Sherinian - Keys

Derek's a great player, but I don't think he'd be able to play Jordan's stuff. I don't think a lot of people can... Except that guy from Bad Salad!

Yes, he was.

It's a bit heavy for Mr. Vai's style, but hey, the dude pioneered the 7-string guitar, so I'm sure that he could pull it off in his own way.

Hey, he played Acid Rain... it's not a stretch at all.

I'd say the same about Paul Gilbert though too. haha.

Fine choices you have there!
My bass choice would be Billy Sheehan, but either way I think it would be covered.

To those who don't think that DS and KG could cover keys and guitar, check out some of Derek's solo work. (also personal choice, I do prefer Derek's lead sounds over Jordan's)
Also check out racer x or PG's solo albums.

Dublagent66

I used to like it a lot more than I do now.  It's ancient history.

Lolzeez

Mike Portnoy
Russell Allen
Tony Levin
Neal Morse
Paul Gilbert

I'm not too sure with Neal Morse though. DS would be suitable but for some reason I have doubts.

I think Flying Colors' Repentance was the extent to which that stuff will have been played.

I think going to such lengths to play/tour such a big portion of your past suggests that you're not really moving forward with your musical career.
Considering how many bands he's been in of late, and how only one of them played a single DT song (FC doing Repentance), not to mention how much new music he's recorded/worked on with artists, I think it's safe to say that this comment is untrue. Him wanting to do a tour performing all the songs in the suite is just another accomplishment he always intended to do.
Actually, make that THREE DT songs he's played as of late - he's done "Hell's Kitchen" and an instrumental cut of "Lines In The Sand" with Sherinian and that group. Great performances, too, from the videos I've seen on YouTube.
Good call - can't believe I forgot about those songs.

I agree with that whole lineup as well, except for the bassist. Billy would be a good choice, but my personal choice would be Mariuz Duda from Riverside who is an amazing bassist and vocalist.

As for Derek, he's definitely improved since his time in DT, so I think he'd be up to the task of covering JR's parts but probably without all the gadgets JR's become known for of late.

By MP? Don't be so sure...
Quote from: BlobVanDam on November 13, 2015, 07:37:14 PMAs a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

I like it, but never have listened straight through.  I usually listen to whole albums and rarely skip around.

I LOVE THE TWELVE STEP SUITE!! The Glass Prison is sooooo much fun on drums, This Dying Soul was the very first song I liked on Train of Thought, The Root of All Evil was the 5th song I ever liked by Dream Theater and it has a fun part, Repentance has one of the coolest things I've ever heard in a song (the letter reading with the mellow music made such a cool impact on the entire song,  and The Shattered Fortress is so cool with its summing up of the past 4 previous songs. It's really heavy and has that awesome riff stuff from the beginning of The Root of All Evil. Oddly enough, those are the songs that helped me branch over to liking Dream Theater. As for The Mirror, that song is HELLA heavy and sounds awesome and don't forget it's second part: Lie.
