Shortly after noon today, a Virginia Tech police officer stopped a vehicle on campus during a routine traffic stop in the Coliseum parking lot near McComas Hall

During the traffic stop. the officer was shot and killed. There were witnesses to this shooting.

Witnesses reported to police the shooter fled on foot heading toward the Cage, a parking lot near Duck Pond Drive. At that parking lot, a second person was found. That person is also deceased.

Several law enforcement agencies have responded to assist. Virginia State Police has been requested to take lead in the investigation

The status of the shooter is unknown. The campus community should continue to shelter in place and visitors should not come to campus.

On a related tangent, I wouldn't be surprised if this was copycat. Always a danger when an incident is so heavily televised as the original Virginia Tech incident.

It's not remotely like the other incident.  This guy walked up to a cop sitting in his cop car writing a ticket for a car he pulled over (completely unrelated to the shooting), pulled the trigger, walked away and turned the gun on himself.  One person dead and the gunman (I won't give him the dignity of calling him a person), not a planned slaughter of people trapped in rooms trapped within a building.  The prevailing theory is that it is related to an armed robbery that happened in the neighboring town the previous night.  I think we'll know a lot more in a few days.  At this point it seems more like random violence than a planned attack.
