To fully appreciate an album? Could be 5 listens, could be 30. I am digging the new Neal Morse record, and my fifth time through *maybe* has me thinking it is better than two of his other solo prog records. It'll take me another good 10 listens to really "know" it, though, which is what I am taking from the question you've asked.

I'll listen to the album (no matter what kind of style of music it is) one time and I'll hear if it's good or not.

lol

lol indeed. I LOVED TMOLS for a week and 20 listens, and then I just came to really dislike it.

It took me 10 listens to fully love In a Flesh Aquarium. I didn't like it at first.

I still don't think I fully appreciate any of DT's albums and I have listened to a good share of DT.

It usually takes me 30-50 to digest any album properly. I'm not good at rating music on the first listen.

I believe that the more you listen the more you appreciate certain aspects of an album. Thus, I don't believe you can ever really fully "appreciate" an album. Just like you can never put the limit on loving someone. It's a different kind of love, not really more or less. Just how I feel about it.

I need at least 3-4 listens to fully appreciate and remember what the songs are like.

As others pointed out, this is really a tricky question.
I would usually say that after 2-3 listens you usually know whether you like a song or not... But in my experience it's never really that simple. With DT, at least for me, it's even more complex than usual.
I liked I&W, Metropolis Pt.2, Octavarium, the second CD from Six Degrees, BC&SL and SC with just one listen.
The first CD from Six Degrees, ToT, FII and Awake took more listens.
And despite my listening to When Dream and Day Unite over 5 times, I still don't like it...

I talked about albums, but there are some songs that I really never know whether I like them or not:
- A few days ago I took Panic Attack out of my iPod, but today I was listening to Octavarium in my car and actually enjoyed it...
- I don't think I like As I Am, yet I keep listening to it...
- This Dying Soul must be two alternating songs, because I either hate it or love it each time I listen to it...
- For some curious reason I never like Scarred and Voices at the same time, they always alternate in my favour...
- I never cared much for The Shattered Fortress, until one day I listened to it and loved it...
- You, Not Me used to be a song I liked, but not any more...

Personal experience (and ranting) aside, if your friend listens to it a couple of times and really doesn't like any song, then DT is probably not for him (even though no single CD really encompasses all that DT is...)

P.S. Octavarium was actually the first DT CD I listened to and it quite sold me on the band.
