Can someone please post a link to the video, other than Youtube?  I'm at school and I don't have access to Youtube!

It's only available via RR's YouTube right now.  Sorry dude.

Ah!  Ok, man...thanks!  I'll check it out tonight.  How long is the video?

21:10.

Honestly, DT.net's ability to keep up with DT news is the reason I joined DTF.

But... what about the good sex?

Not sure if anyone will catch this stuff other than me and Lonestar, but I would be willing to bet that somebody who worked on this video is a Food Network fan.  The split screen and fadeout effect of the final 3 is right from Chopped.  Also, when they are deliberating and discussing the pros and cons of the guys, the percussion sound effects in the background (one cymbal wash where there are positive comments and a different cymbal wash for negative ones) are right out of Chopped and Iron Chef America.

Oh boy.... you and my GF would get along famously..... :rollin

I work where the sound gets done for chopped.  I assure you they didn't also work on this documentary

Oh, I'm not saying they used the same exact sound effect.  I'm just saying that for the video effect and the audio effects that I mentioned, it wouldn't surprise me if whoever worked on the doc was a fan of those shows and deliberately chose to do something similar.

Oh, before I forget, I also have to go on record as saying:  As I thought I would be, I was impressed with Priester's drumming and the band's reaction to him.  He obviously worked really hard to prepare, really wanted it badly, and really took it personally when he messed up.  I couldn't help but like him, root for him, and feel bad when he messed up.  Really special guy.  I will definitely want to follow him in the future.

I strongly recommend you "Temple of Shadows" by Angra.

Amazing album, amazing drumming.  :tup

Something I noticed during the videos, when the full band is interviewed...

Without Drummer DT = interviews are in Black and White

With Drummer DT = Interviews are in Color

Super Dude

Finally, finally watched it through.  I'm glad they selected Mangini, he's the right man for the job.  I feel bad for Aquiles Priester though, he seems like a really chill kinda guy.

The news of the day: John Myung smiles. At 6:37 in the video, to be precise. Congrats to Mike Mangini but the true maestro is Peter Wildoer who has done something that no man has ever before, he has made JM smile.

We need just 12 more people lurkers and we break the september record!

The Presence of Frenemies

I'm glad Mangini came away with the job. He seemed like the most natural fit--a fun, cool guy, but not somebody who's going to pull the band in a zany direction. I really like his passion and how he sounded with the songs, as well as his background--he's played with both a fairly light band (Extreme) and a heavy one (Annihilator) and can do both the melodic and metal sides.

That said, I just really have to tip my hat to Mr. Wildoer. I have to admit, man (if you read this), that at the beginning of all this, you were way down my list, because I'm not into the screamed vocals, nor am I a big fan of Static Impulse (largely because of the screamed vocals and the extreme metal elements). But your audition, Wildoer, was phenomenal, and as somebody really into the metal side of DT (Train of Thought and the last two albums), I was really blown away. I can see why James and the guys hold you in such high regard. So, even if the harsh vocals you tend to favor aren't my thing, your musical ability certainly impresses me, as does the fact that you're here sharing your experiences about an audition that didn't even result in success for you. That's just fuckin' awesome, man, and I wish you nothing but success.

Does anyone else get the feeling that DT really loved these drummers so much that we're about to see a big array of side-projects? There's speculation about Marco already, and basically every drummer said that they'd love to make music with DT at some point. It'll be interesting to see.

Just imagine how would the other members react on that?

Petrucci would just smile and say it's "f***ing incredible"
Miyung would probably say nothing or just nod
Rudess would also be pretty calm about it
even LaBrie wouldn't act as if he is having a heart attack

I would've liked to see some colaboration with both Minnemann, Wildoer and Lang (and maybe also some crazy stuff with Donati)...

nikostheater

First of all, congratulations Mr Mangini, welcome to the DT family.

Peter, your audition was so great, you did great and we are happy here and thrilled with your excellent performance, skill, your personality and the fact that you were among the final 3 in a list that includes Mike Mangini,Marco Minnemann,Virgil Donati,Thomas Lang... you nailed it and we are proud for you here.We are also thankful for taking the time to post here and chat with us,you are our hero.I am looking forward to hear more from you in the future.

Aquilles Priester was torn to shreds here but he proved not only that he is a world class drummer,he proved (to me at least) that he is a great guy,a great personality and truly his place is among the greats on his craft.Congratulations mr Priester for a great audition. We hope to hear more from you in the future too.

I loved the last episode:We saw Aquilles giving his heart there despite a mistake,we saw Peter there dominating and making JM smile,we saw Mike crying listening that he is the new guy,we listened to JM introducing himself as JM(!)...such a great way to announce the drummer and such a great way for the band to communicate with us..hats off to everyone.

Last but not least, many thanks to Mike Portnoy for his work with the band all this years,we will support him in his future projects and we love him.

It seems to me that the shock of September 8th became a win win situation to all:the band,Mangini, fans, the auditioners and to Portnoy himself. We are going to have fantastic albums from both the band and from Mike's projects..and of course many of us we will start listening more to the other drummers work..

I can't thank the band enough for this..

If you're saying Mangini doesen't deserve his spot in DT because he "isn't enough man" or "too emotional" you can take your opinions elsewhere. Emotion is only positive when playing music. Mangini definitely deserves his place in Dream Theater. Fantastic!

???  No he wasn't.  I and some others said he wasn't going to be the drummer, but I don't think anyone even remotely "tore him to shreds."  The worst criticism I can recall hearing is that some found him to be "mechanical," but that's hardly a harsh criticism.

DarkLord_Lalinc

Man, to travel from Brazil to New York, get into trouble to obtain a USA visa and still give a great audition speaks by itself of the man.
