And the rest of your life getting friend requests from people you hated in high school, invites to play Mafia Wars, and every corporation in the world able to buy my personal info? No thanks.
But seriously, it really is an annoying way for an established band to get information out.
Just... ignore them. Just because you create an account doesn't mean you have to maintain it. Even better, don't put your personal info up. Heck, register under a fake name. Then spend the 3 minutes it takes to set up a Facebook account….

Here's a great idea, bro. Are you ready?
Don't put in your fucking information.
I will never understand people who bitch about Facebook; it's literally the easiest thing in the world to make an account.
I'm only bitching about it because they could post info on their website, or distribute via mailing list. Believe it or not, that would actually be easier than signing up on fb and doing everything that way.But like this, and unlike posting it on a webpage, they'll have a shitload of people whom they can then send any kind of marketing information. Let alone because they'll explicitly submit to a mailing list. And they won't need to worry about server overload. From their point of view, it makes a whole lot of sense to use Facebook.
[facebook stuff]
and at the end of it all you will hear John P. say...
"and we are sooo excited to tell you who the new drummer is and will do so shortly, but rest assured, you will not be disappointed."
I haven't done one of these posts in a LONG time (like way back in the DT.net days), but I think it's time for:
The Score So Far, According to bosk1.
So, thus far in the thread, we have the following posts:
-Official announcements about how all this works: 1 post
-Posts asking how all this works (or attempting to answer): 14 posts
-Fanboy appreciation (not that there's anything wrong with that): 7 posts
-"It's about time!"/"Good, now we can finally stop speculating": 5 posts
-Debates about Facebook: 21 posts
-"I stopped caring _ months ago": 2 posts
-Veiled jabs at Mike Portnoy: 4 posts
-Drummer speculation: 2 posts
-Rebecca Black discussion: 2 posts
I'd say the thread is developing along expected lines.
I am pretty sure it will be posted on their official website, along with other websites.Exactly, so why the whole fb mailing list waste?

I just don't know at this point. I don't have any further information, so it's hard to say what I should and shouldn't allow, and I haven't gotten any direction one way or the other from management. But even though we are not an "official" forum, I do respect the band's wishes on stuff like that, as it says in the forum rules, so we'll just have to wait and see what the info is and what the band wants done with it.100% agree.
How about this - They release an audition video each week and the last one is the drummer.

Yar; I look at it like this: any press they generate is exposure and exposure = fans/money and if Dream Theater is making money I'm happy...even if they have to string us around by our pinkies for a few months to do it. Also, someone should compile some of the more hilarious comments on DT's Facebook :D "Dream THEATER, WHY NEVER INDIA PAST present or June bug! THIS hate overcomes mountains of valor for your swedish massage PORTNOY!"
So do we have to sign up exactly at 11 AM or can we do it later in the day. This whole thing is rather unclear

Do you really think they're going to ONLY let people who are there in that 60 second period sign up? :justjen
As excited as I am to see we're finally gonna learn who the drummer is, doesn't an "announcement of the announcement" have anyone worried that something extremely gimmicky is going to ensue?Kind of like how they still haven't said anything about actually announcing the new guy, just "At this point sign up, and then at some unknown point we will tell you when we will announce him."
I understand respectiving exclusivity, but it strikes me as ironic that DT would be using a social networking site for an item they don't want socially networked.James has had facebook for years... found his profile a little while ago while idly searching - wondered if he might be tucked away under the name Kevin. He was. People only started adding him fairly recently, though.
Looking forward to the videos in any regard. I wonder how long this "announcement to the announcement" has been in the works. At least since James signed up for FB a couple of months ago, don't you think?
Kind of like how they still haven't said anything about actually announcing the new guy, just "At this point sign up, and then at some unknown point we will tell you when we will announce him."
Yep. That's what they are going to do. And everyone on the other side of the world should set an alarm clock and wake up in the middle of the night just for this event. So do we have to sign up exactly at 11 AM or can we do it later in the day. This whole thing is rather unclear

But it doesn't say when they will announce that. In the press release it says that we will find out exactly when and now the drummer announcement will be made, so it's not an unknown point.
I understand respectiving exclusivity, but it strikes me as ironic that DT would be using a social networking site for an item they don't want socially networked.Wouldn't they want it spread as much as possible? Why would anyone with something to sell not want something "socially networked"?
But it doesn't say when they will announce that. They could wait two more months (or any other period of time) then say "We'll tell you next Tuesday."

I have class during this. :-\

Apparently you can't read..."and to receive"
Apparently you can't read..."and to receive"It says "receive", but it doesn't say "Receive on Thursday." We could receive it on Thursday, or Friday, or the second Tuesday of next week.
Vox, what time is it over here then?No idea and I must say that I don't really care that much. I'll see whatever announcent they make here, just 30 seconds later. And I don't really care for DT that much anymore.

Is it just me that thinks 3 days to audition 7 drummers doesn't seem a long time to be making such a big decision?

That's why I don't keep looking at the pot to see when the water will finally boil. I go on until it's ready. Such a waste of time, energy, and excitement when you do that with this kind of stuff.

It's impossible to maintain that level of excitement and expectation (just ask my wife!) and I just burnt out on it I guess. It will change with the announcement, probably, but not for an announcement of an announcement.

I bet it will be weekly videos of the auditions. Or teasers of the videos, with options to purchase a full DVD documentary. They are going to spread this out to build up to album release and make money. I think it will also be presented as very complimentary to all who auditioned, promoting whatever projects they have going so they don't look like "losers".

I just read that article again and looked at the list of drummers there, and I'm now questioning its sources. It kinda reads they got their info from DTF, seriously. And the bizarre inclusion of Aquiles Priester in that list makes me wonder whether there isn't some truth to the notion.

YEAH! Changing a setting on a computer that takes two seconds is BULLSHIT!It's bullshit because that application does not conform to the same security standards. Anything that makes you downgrade your security level in order to use is inherently poorly made.
What were you guys waiting for? This is promo at its best. We'll get to see an indepth look at the auditions. We are incredibly lucky as fans!! They could have just said: "Our drummer is Mike Mangini, alright lets move on!" But no, they're allowing us to share these special moments they had when looking for a new drummer.
I've got to say: Never Enough. As usual.

If it wasn't for the fact that you predicted it right down to the cheesy, deep-voiced narrator, I wouldn't be laughing nearly as hard. I'm STILL laughing!
I have no idea what any of you expected. The album doesn't come out for months. If they just told us who the new drummer was, excitement would die off very quickly. This is a way to keep up excitement at least closer to their first show or when the album comes out. It's their first smart move in a very long time.

I took a screenshot in the moment where one of the drummers is holding a letter. I'm trying to figure out what it says:Cool, thanks for doing this :)
"To The World's Greatest Drummers, welcome to the auditions! We are sorry we don't have a practice room. But we do have something for you to practice on - and doing so well provides instant glorification, the [something] inside!
Please attack this drum with the mallet we've provided, just as you are going to do for real in the studio! :)
Best wishes to an audition that blows everyone away!"
This is probably a FAIL transcription, feel free to help me out....if you have nothing better to do, like me.
Yessir hef. :X Sorry.:tup
I have no qualms with them stretching it out now, that's how they will maintain interest until the album comes out.
My only concern is that DT is joining in with other "illustrous" reality-TV bands like INXS etc.

When they're in the studio, at the end of the video, and James on the Phone says "...welcome you to the family" they're actually at Cove, aren't they? Do you think it's part of the script (of this sort of Talent Show) or may be right to think "he" wasn't there with them when they've written the music?
So do you reckon Mangini got it to keep the band all american...I mean over the likes of Marco, Lang & Donati in particular ?

They were in the control room, they could have easily gone in there to speak in privacy and then speaking through the control mic to let the drummer in the live room hear them. It's what happened in that movie Rock Star.
Honestly, if all this secret keeping was over a TV promotional stunt, imma be pissed.

What is disappointing for me besides the whole reality-like atmosphere, is the lack of a date for the announcement.
"to find out exactly when and how the momentous announcement about the band’s new lineup will be made" was in the first announcement, yet we didn't get a date.

It will be a one time thing until the new album is released, then it will be back to business as usual. I also doubt DT is a big enough band to have it ruin their image. They're making the best out of the situation. I'm sure there's a more obscure way they could handle it, but what would be the point?
DT is not that kind of band.

They're making the best out of the situation. I'm sure there's a more obscure way they could handle it, but what would be the point?
I'll admit showing it on TV is a very odd idea that I don't know if I can get behind, but the typical drama imposed in this? I Don't see the problem. It's a trailer, it's only purpose is to get people excited. A simple unbiased documentary wouldn't do that for most people, they took the easy way out, but considering what they're doing, I don't think it matters which way they took out. As I said, it will all be over in a few months at most, this isn't a prolonged thing.
Doesn't have too be "more obscure", just actual documentary, not reality-TV. Band documentaries have a long history and they can be really excellent. The choice to frame this whole thing as an American Idol audition rather irritates me. Sure, I will get over it, but I scratch my head at this choice.

Words of wisdom. As usual.I have no qualms with them stretching it out now, that's how they will maintain interest until the album comes out.Joining in with bands who can market products to their fanbase cleverly is no bad thing.
My only concern is that DT is joining in with other "illustrous" reality-TV bands like INXS etc.
rumborak
If it was just a cheap, wasteful cash-in, I'd be a little cautious. As it is, it looks like a lavishly produced documentary feature, offering an in-depth view of a process that we've spent the last six months speculating about.
A band that takes care and expends effort in giving the fans a product that they'll be interested in receiving gets all the thumbs up from me. And, frankly, as ridiculous as the wait's been, I'd rather the news be delivered through the medium of a gorgeous, lengthy, in-depth examination of the most exciting process in the band's recent history, than through the medium of a press release tucked away on a Roadrunner Records website.
It creates publicity because it's good.

If they're just having fun with this, that's cool. The fear is that with this AI-style stuff, a 3-episode mini-series etc., DT is maybe taking the "next step" in their career.

In addition to a nation-wide release, the film is rumored to air on television as a 3-part mini-series (official details TBA).Ooh christ, miniseries? I like that even more.
So national release? In Theaters?
Because it's not really the band I fell in love with back in the day.Fair cop. I don't know, I quite like the progression. I love that they're using the change as an excuse to grow, and excel, and develop. Marching boldly into the future - and, snowballing. Quite happy for them.

So I like the concept, it's very cool that they'll be showing so much detail about the auditions and really opening up about MP.I think the facebook thing is because, by controlling who sees it, they can prompt people to join their mailing list - allows them to establish a direct connection to the fans.
What I don't get was why four months ago they didn't say, "We're filming a documentary about the whole process, but it'll be better if you don't know who the drummer is until you see the whole thing." ? Still can't figure out why they're limiting it to fb either, it does a lot of good for their image, but only if you let people see it, it should be on their site, YouTube, everywhere.
I definitely just think they're having fun and doing this all very tongue-in-cheek. Exactly. Tons of people will "like" DT on Facebook, giving themselves more publicity. Then you are requiring people to join their mailing list to see the video. It definitely gets the band more publicity and visibility they might not have had otherwise. I remember there was a game that was advertised like this. Its name was Daikatana, and I think at least some people here know how that ended up.
Nice to see they exploited their break up to hype everything up and go on TV and make documentaries instead of just telling us who it is.I had forgotten about that game. :rollin

I find it cool that even without Mike, who was the driving force behind a lot of this stuff, the band are still trying to think outside the box and give us some extras.I'm just happy Mike didn't "direct" this. Anyone remember SFaM DVD? Yikes.
Why would saying that you have to have a facebook account, have to like Dream Theater, and have to subscribe to the mailing list increase the number of people that see the video. Isn't that the goal? To get as many people to see as possible? It seems like they're bottlenecking it.Exactly. Tons of people will "like" DT on Facebook, giving themselves more publicity. Yep, i need permission from one of the mods or bosk
I still think Minnemann is the best fit.....like a glove!!absolutely this. Too bad he supposedly won't be the drummer. I still have my fingers crossed that these rumors are false and that he is in-fact a part of DT.
I'd like to retract my earlier statement about them announcing through the microphone in the control room to the new drummer that he was in the band. I watched it again, and yea they're talking into the phone.

Mangini is the one who threw his sticks in the air.

I'm going to play devil's advocate for just a second here, even though this is a complete reversal of some things I've said in the past. Here's a "what-if" for you: Given that they're doing such a media production about this, there has obviously been a good amount of pre-planning. It seems to me that they would have taken necessary steps to limit spoiler information as much as possible. So, that being said, what if a lot of the things that have been said about some of the 7 are intentional misdirection or at least red herrings to keep things intentionally confused and under wraps. I've been pretty certain about who it is for a long time now based on things I've heard. But, really, I think all bets are somewhat off. I wouldn't be surprised if it is any of the 7.
ME too. Minnemann or Lang.This.

That's true. Didn't Peter Wildoer HIMSELF say that he was not chosen? If one of them is blatantly lying for the cover-up, I'd imagine that all information can come under that same level of scrutiny. I'm pretty okay with this. :)
my interpretation of bosk's post is...
what if none of the 7 guys are the new drummer and it's someone else completely???

OH. MY. GOD. at some posts on the facebook page.
BUTTHURT AND PROG-SNOBS, BUTTHURT AND PROG-SNOBS EVERYWHERE.
LOL, looks like WMG is playing whack a mole on Youtube. Original one I watched is down with a WMG copyright notice on it already. Another one up. I'm sure it won't be there long. So yeah, I'd say they really don't want it there at this point in time.
I'm not necessarily butthurt about it, but I am kind of disappointed they tried to pull a VH1 special out of this. They're exploiting it to the max.Yeah, how dare they have a bit of fun and publicise the band in the process? DAMN THEM!
Am I the only one who thinks Marco Minneman looks like Dirk Nowitzki? No
That would be awesome. Seven drummers, seven songs. One guy gets to tour.
What if all 7 are the new drummers?
What I'm trying to say is: I don't give a damn who the new drummer is, I just want the album.I'm not necessarily butthurt about it, but I am kind of disappointed they tried to pull a VH1 special out of this. Yeah, the black and white part where they're talking about MP gives a glimpse into why they haven't said much about it. We will get to hear they're side at some point.I'm not necessarily butthurt about it, but I am kind of disappointed they tried to pull a VH1 special out of this. They're exploiting it to the max.
We'll see how it turns out. Some Kind of Monster, in spite of the ego behind it, is one of the most brutally honest things anyone's ever put out about themselves to the media, which makes it great. I don't expect the same level of emotional depth and conflict here, but it can work and be great if it's open and honest instead of being an extended promo piece.

This is what I'm afraid is going to happen.I'm not necessarily butthurt about it, but I am kind of disappointed they tried to pull a VH1 special out of this. They're exploiting it to the max.
So? So long as the music doesn't suffer (in the sense of them "selling out" to gain more popularity), it's all good.

Some Kind of Monster really just showed how washed up Metallica was as a group. It really served no other purpose than that. I hope DT's documentary doesn't show this kind of thing.
Some of these guys are gonna need bigger kits.
I am "friends" with 5 of the 7 drummers who auditions on FaceBook (and yes it is really them, promise) and told them I saw the vid and wished them the best of luck. About 5 minutes after I posted, Marco Minnemann actually responded telling me that he IS NOT the drummer of DT. But he's working with JR on the Musical Minds Meld thing, and he also mentioned that he's working on something with JR and JP...

Actually, I wouldn't mind seeing a smaller kit. I like it when drummers focus on the essentials. As with many other things, music thrives on limitation.

as a drummer myself, this comment urks me. "essential" is a subjective word at best, especially when it comes to music. besides, DT is about being over the top, is in not? if you want a 4 piece kit treatment go listen to nirvana.
regardless, anyone who says it's possible to make a 3 piece kit sound like 50 has never touched a drumstick in their life.
And anybody who claims prog needs to be played with a 50-piece drum kit has never listened to good prog.
IMHO, MP had a tendency to just "work" the big kit the easy way, with fills that just seemed to try to execute as many different pieces as possible. Again, this is my personal opinion, but I think art has a tendency to lose its focus if it is too unconstrained.

How anyone could have a problem with this is beyond me. This looks like an incredible treat. Even if the winner was leaked, I think would be irrevelevant. Just to have them share the process with us is an incredible gesture on the part of the band.

Basically its a trailor for a documentary apparently titled Dream Theater 2011: The Spirit Carries On, about their search for a new drummer, which is how they're gonna announce the new drummer.man, I'd hate to see what your Cliffnotes version is like.

Nope. They never said that.
It mostly shows Myung's takes on MP departure and the proccess of searching the new drummer, Myung interview some of the drummers and tells how he is enjoying jamming with them and that the process is about having great chemistry with the new drummer. At the end he welcome the new drummer to the family with a tackle but you can't see who the drummer is in the shot.
*snip*
Then a live Chicken is sacrificed and people wearing Black cloaks bow down and pray. Then they tell you to wait longer to find something out. :tick2:Sorry bosk, didn't read through all the pages. Stereotypical, deep-voiced, melodramatic narrator (yes, I'm serious) is talking about how the members of DT rawk the universe. "Then, the unexpected happened. Their drummer, Mike Portnoy, decides to leave the band." Band is stunned. They somehow move on and start auditioning people. We see each of the seven playing drums, talking, playing more drums. Video ends with the 4 remaining members in the studio control room leaning over a phone, and JLB says, "we wanted to take the opportunity to say...welcome to the family." Video fades out.
Oh, and JLB says "monumental moment," probably after being slapped for saying "especially special" in an earlier take.
*snip*
Trying to get yourself banned?

I am on FB with Wildoer right now.
He is very talkative.
At last they wanted to try some new ideas. This was HAAAAAAAAARD! The ideas were in weird odd times and not one bar with the same meter. Very cool ideas and I got my head around it so and so after a while. If those ideas end up on the new DT album it will be PROG! :-)Oh wow! Very cool.

Cheers for going to the trouble! And to Peter for responding so candidly. Thank him from us. Although, might be a bit freaky. "Hey Peter, this conversation is being leched over by strangers as it happens." No, actually, don't thank him from us. Still! Nice.
"a tech song with 30 part changes within the space of 3 minutes"
Dance of Eternity?
Yeah, I did fine. I wouldn't change anything......but, then again....I didn't feel that gig was right for me anyway....from the very beginning.
I was very busy during that time period....only had a few weeks to learn a 20 minute song, a ballad, and a tech song with 30 part changes within the space of 3 minutes! Haha.
That all went well.....
We jammed a little while....was cool but, the environment (in ears, video, etc...) didn't lend itself to a lot of creative moments...plus the fact that these guys we're trying to "jam" in odd times, etc....
Then they threw some riffs at me to see how quickly I could spit out complex stuff.
Now this...was fun but, at the same time....I could tell that they were looking for a dude that will come in....and record an entire record in the studio...on the spot.
I've never wanted to work that way..... as I believe that if the business (need to put out a record quickly) over trumps the musical vision (taking time and creating the best you can)
then that ultimately directs where the band ends up in the future.
I like to sit on riffs for a few days.... at least and create the best possible part (as opposed to the automatic one)
All good though, like I said...was a load of fun and made some great friends out of it.
D
What about the song before TCOT? I sounds familiar but I just can't place it . . .
Wildoer seems to be very down to earth about this, as he says that it was unexpected for him to be asked to audition, and he couldn't believe it. He seems a very cool guy.

There has been much talk over Dream Theater and the auditions they held to find a new drummer, since Mike Portnoy decided to leave the band last year. The band has stayed pretty quiet about the whole process, but now they gear up to announce their decision.
A source very close to the situation has told Sick Drummer Magazine the new drummer is Mike Mangini, and others who were asked/auditioned were: Derek Roddy, Marco Minnemann, Virgil Donati, Thomas Lang, Aquiles Priester and Peter Wildoer.
This was just posted 4/18 on the record label's website: "Dream Theater would like to share with its fans some of the intense process, along with the musical joy, that went into choosing a new drummer. Who is the best fit behind the kit? Go to Dream Theater’s Facebook page on Thursday, 4/21 at 11 AM to sign up for the mailing list and to receive more details about an exclusive and intimate look at the auditions, and to find out exactly when and how the momentous announcement about the band’s new lineup will be made. Also on Facebook, fans will be able to find out information about the band’s upcoming 2011 World Tour".
What we do not like about this situation is the way the band went about the video footage detail. We feel the drummers were used in a sense, for their popularity. Each drummer was sent a camera to use and were asked to film as much as they could surrounding the audition. They were told it was to become "bonus footage" on a future DVD or something to that effect. The drummers were asked to film themselves preparing for the audition, practicing, traveling to the audition and anything else they felt relative. Then, upon arriving at the actual audition the drummers were asked to sign a release handing over all the video footage they had recorded, and if they didn't, they were not going to be able to audition.
We feel this is somewhat taking advantage of the drummers who auditioned and could have been handled a better way. Perhaps informing the drummers of the plan and sending a video release to be reviewed in advance. Not sticking them with a release at the audition and holding that over their heads as a requirement to audition, only to use the footage to steam up the facebook page around the announcement of the new drummer.
Right. Much better to make an already long thread longer by reposting something that has already been posted and discussed.

Peter at audition
Cool, so now it's on page 5 and page 19. I can see why it would be important to have it on both of those momentous pages of the thread.
More importantly ZB, it's already been confirmed by Roddy and Wildoer that the claims in that article are nonsense and that DT were completely nice and up front about everything. Reposting it when it's already been debunked by the people who auditioned seems a bit strange.
Maybe that's just someone that auditioned who was bitter that they didn't get picked or something. I have a hard time believing the site that posted that would just make it up. Still interesting, at any rate. Not made it up necessarily, but "we heard it from someone" is far from concrete, and when the people themselves are disagreeing, it would indicate that the story has either been fabricated or at the very least exaggerated from what someone heard.
Seems strange they'd even have anyone audition who considers "jamming in weird time signatures" to be a hindrance creatively.Wasn't it Roddy who said that?
I do agree with him on song and drum part writing though. Wildoer for DT producer!
But what do I think DT's motivations are? There are three primary reasons they did this...

See, this would have been nice to know. Bosk didn't mention that, and as I said I didn't get a chance to read through 15+ pages to see if it had been debunked.

Maybe Bosk was annoyed at the tone of your "maybe this has been fully explained, but F.U. bosk. I can't be bothered to find out, so I'm just going to post it anyway" post (not to mention the other crap you've been pulling around here lately).

Look, I'm not going to argue and derail the thread and give you material to ban me with (which is clearly what you want), but my OP was NOTHING of that extent. There were 15 pages, did you honestly expect me to read through all of them in 10 minutes? I was around earlier today when that was posted, and just came back a little bit ago. I figured if I simply quoted a post to raise discussion, that would be ok. If there was already more discussion on it than the five posts I saw, I figured that would have been stated and we could just have moved on. Wouldn't derail the thread or anything, simple as that. You could have just said "We already discussed that, parts of the article regarding the treatment of the drummer have been proven false". Instead you posted a very sarcastic and rude reply to me.
You're acting as if I reposted the article to spite you or something. I just reposted an article man. Calm down. And I don't know what "other crap" I've been pulling around here, but I would like to hear it if you want to PM me and discuss this further.

so, roddy and wildoer (sp?) are out.
that leaves 5.
Parts of that voiceover couldn't have been more cheesy!
I actually don't. The only thing I've ever watch from Syfy was Battlestar Galactica and I watched it on video.Parts of that voiceover couldn't have been more cheesy!

I didn't like the Terms of Service for the app that has to be joined, so I guess I don't get to see the video. I sure don't want to agree to let them spam me. "DTR Music may email me directly at " the email address I use to log on.

And this is based on watching each of them say maybe two sentences, in maybe 10 seconds of video each? LOL. Not that I know anything about any of the candidates, but, you've got to admit that drawing conclusions from this clip is a bit ridiculous.
Two more things occur to me:
- It's interesting that Roddy and Wildoer flat out said they couldn't quite keep up with the material. While I'm not sure how good they are in comparison to the other drummers, these guys are very good. It says a lot about how technically advanced DT really is.

- Also interesting about them is that, in a sense, they were just looking for a gig. I 100% understand this, but for DT it's not the best attitude. When you compare that to Lang (seemed to genuinely want to find a home in a band, actually very surprising), Minnemann (genuinely excited about the idea of the DT lifestyle), and Mangini (willing to quit being a professor at Berkelee), it's easy to tell why just from their attitude they didn't make it. I don't think this is a bad thing, different people belong in different situations and they did their jobs like professionals for the auditions. But it shows why personality is just as important as ability.

The way I worded that was too vague and dramatic. What I meant was that when they got to the "we're going to throw super hard riffs at you and see what you come up with on the spot" section, neither of them felt wholly comfortable. Roddy openly said it was a bit much for him and that it wasn't his way of writing. Wildoer seems like he was a little more comfortable but still not fully at their speed.
im not sure who said that, but that's total bullstuff. roddy and wildoer could definitely keep up, they are phenomenal drummers, even if they aren't familiar with prog (which doesn't even matter).

Peter Wildoer -My audition started with two jams where we set the levels for in ears and just felt eachother out, musically that is. ;-) After that we went through the three songs they sent me. I guess you'll get to know what songs it was on the next ep...isode of the DT video. ;-) At last they wanted to try some new ideas. This was HAAAAAAAAARD! Thanks dude..I had a great conversation with Peter Wildoer tonite which I posted some of(not all BTW). no, it's based on other things that wildoer has said, most notably on roddy's forum and a fb chat someone had with him. all of which have been posted here.
@ Reapsta. I did not make it up at all. and Peter would attest to it. In fact, I could post the exact conversation from him. link and all. Maybe he could handle the riffs, in which case I went a bit too far. But he clearly seemed uncomfortable with them. Bad for the drummer of DT.Peter Wildoer -My audition started with two jams where we set the levels for in ears and just felt eachother out, musically that is. ;-) After that we went through the three songs they sent me. I guess you could say njdtfan made this up. Like I said, not the same attitude as Roddy, but the fact he called it hard meant he was forced to play a level higher than he was comfortable.
I have the feeling that Mangini at the very least probably heard the super hard riffs and just knocked them out with no effort, which is what DT wanted. MP might not be technically the best drummer, but simply through a lot of practice he had learned to naturally play in odd times without thinking it through.
I took a screenshot in the moment where one of the drummers is holding a letter. I'm trying to figure out what it says:
"To The World's Greatest Drummers
Welcome to the auditions!
We're sorry we don't have a practice room. But we do have something for you to practice on - and doing so will provide instant gratification, the treat's inside!
Please attack this drum with the mallet we've provided, just as you're going to do for real in the studio! :)
Best wishes to an audition that blows everyone away!"
This is probably a FAIL transcription, feel free to help me out....if you have nothing better to do, like me.

No offense at all dude ;D. Trust me, i believe 1/2 of what I read on the internet. But when I say what Peter told me, I beleive it. I am in NO WAY trying to cause commotion. Sorry if I caused offense. I obviously can't be 100% certain, but I believe you're telling the truth.

Regarding song choice, didn't Zeleny confirm that the three songs were TDOE, TSCO, and ANTR?
He seems rather passive aggressive.
I understand what Roddy is trying to say about writing and I kinda agree with him.I don't believe there is any "right" or "wrong" way to approach music - that's just the way DT do things and they like it and it works for them. Obviously Roddy doesn't dig it so he probably wasn't the right fit, and that's all he said really, although he did come across as just slightly arrogant about it.
Also, every post of his really comes across as bitter.Interesting, I don't get that vibe at all. He seems to have enjoyed the process but felt that he wouldn't be the right fit for DT anyway because of a different approach to writing music.
interesting roddy quote
"
One thing that was said directly to me was....."whoever it will be.....it's got to be the fans choice...someone the fans are completely happy with".

Well finally I feel I can post here. I've been following this forum quite closely since September and I want to thank you all for entertaining reading! Most of all I'm very impressed with the detective work around here and the enormous commitment concerning the audition, fantastic fans!Oh brilliant! Who's your favourite member? It's me, right?
hi everyone. i just wanted to say i am not the new drummer for dream theater. I did not even heard of dream theater until someone ask me am i new drummer. sorry to disappoint you all. keep it metal.

To Mladen: I'm the guy at 1:39, Lang at 1:44 and Roddy at 2:02.Thanks for that, Peter. :) I wasn't too familiar with your work when Mike left the band, but after hearing your incredible drumming on Static impulse, you were my first choice for the new Dream Theater drummer, even though I had no idea what you look like. ;D I'm blown away by your playing, and even though I have a feeling you're not the new drummer, I'll be following what you're doing in the future. Great to hear from you. :tup
Thanks for posting Peter. We hope to keep hearing from you here. I' m sure you did great at the audition, and hopefully we will watch all the auditons soon :):lol That one was a joke account, but as far as I can tell, Peter is legit.
PS. I remembered how I had loled at this...hi everyone. i just wanted to say i am not the new drummer for dream theater. I did not even heard of dream theater until someone ask me am i new drummer. sorry to disappoint you all. keep it metal.

It's great to see great musicians posting here on DT.
First, let me add the obligatory, thanks for posting, Peter, its very cool you took the time to pop on in.Can someone please, "take the time" and answer my inquiry please?
I do have a question for anyone who can answer. Who is the much older guy in the auditions? He looks like Micky Thomas from Jefferson Starship.

Oh wait, now I look at it again, I guess you mean Virgil Donati. This guy? That would be the guy! Thanks. Am I off in saying he resembles Mickey Thomas? Especially if you've seen Micky lately. They look very similar.

All this said I can also add that I work as a math teacher.
Hey there!
Well finally I feel I can post here. I've been following this forum quite closely since September and I want to thank you all for entertaining reading! Most of all I'm very impressed with the detective work around here and the enormous commitment concerning the audition, fantastic fans!
I have so many things I've read over the last months that I would like to comment. I don't remember all and I'm not sure how much I can say without destroying the next video(s). I've been a DT fan since I saw the "Pull me under" video on MTV's Headbanger's Ball in the spring of 1993 and I don't consider myself being a guy that just wanted a gig and not being a fan like some may think!
I want to clarify one thing that was discussed here yesterday regarding the odd meter "test" the guys threw at us. First of all it was not like the normal rehearsal auditioning for DT, I mean it's DT! I was nervous for a month before the audition and when they told me they wanted to try some new ideas and then when they started playing the first idea I almost froze, ha ha ha. I could almost not hear what they were playing! I promise it was not easy.
Well, the guys are very humble and fantastic individuals and told me all the other drummers were kind of surprised too when presented to this test and that it was cool. Like already quoted here I got my head around it so and so and one idea we even jammed around. At the day of my audition even Virgil told me that I was in for a treat at some point on the audition, didn't make me less nervous, ha ha ha!!! All this said I can also add that I work as a math teacher. ;) I guess I'm the only one out of all the seven that don't do music full time but work a normal day job.
Hey guys. I've been really busy the past few days. Seems like a ton of information has come out. I don't think I have time right now to go back through the thread so if someone doesn't mind, could someone fill me in?
Sorry for being lazy.
4/21/2011: DT release video trailer of the new drummer auditions on the band's Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Dream-Theater/7677942180). The video reveals that the following seven drummers auditioned: 1. Mike Mangini 2. Thomas Lang 3. Virgil Donati 4. Marco Minnemann 5. Aquiles Priester 6. Derek Roddy 7. Peter Wildoer. We still do NOT know when the full video will be released, in what format (online/bonus content with new album/one video vs. several/etc.) or when the new drummer will be announced.
The ideas were in weird odd times and not one bar with the same meter. Very cool ideas and I got my head around it so and so after a while. If those ideas end up on the new DT album it will be PROG! :-)
It will be very interesting to see what the new guy is allowed to offer from a
creative perspective...or if DT just wanted someone to come in a lay down what they envisioned, at least for this one album anyways.
Well finally I feel I can post here. I've been following this forum quite closely since September...
They all used the same set.
They all used the same set.
Exactly, I was referring to the position of cymbals. It may mean nothing after all. They all used the same set.
The point relates to how the kit is set up.
So, Peter, I guess the next logical question that we all MUST have answered is: How do you feel about the vocal stylings of the artist known as Rebecca Black? Inquiring forum members want to know.
Did you create a special colour scheme for PW? As in purple=possible DT drummer/simply musician? Because that's awesome :metal
They all used the same set.
Which BTW is something I like. It makes each drummer's performance about the performance rather than the kit.

Aniland is John Myung, isn't he? It's OK Bosk, you can tell us.
I agree that it is most likely Mangini, but not for any of the reasons you just posted. All 7 drummers used the same kit for the auditions.

One thing I'm still learning are all the abbreviation you and all DT (see even I use these abbreviations now, ha ha ha) fans use like JP, JR, ANTR etc... It's like you have your own language. ;)
Hey, you know, while we're on the subject, I just realized something... Does anyone know what day it is today?

Gotta get down on Friday
Also, could any mod please add that official link to the OP?
JP: "Dream Theater has never been just one person."Not necessarily.
Does anybody else think that this was a sort of refutation of Portnoy's hefty control over the band in past years? As a sort of, "Look, those days are kaput."

Anyway, I wouldn't worry about your place coming across as "negative" bosk. I mean, I think this place is a far cry more positive than most place on the interwebz. I'm sure Peter has been on Youtube before so I'd be very surprised if any negativity here (which is tame at best) would actually phase him

I know. But I can't help but think back to the first time I met Mike and was introduced to him as the forum admin for this place. I was shocked at how visibly hurt he was over some things he had read here. And while I feel he overreacted and focused too much on the negative and not on the overwhelming majority of positive comments that are usually here, it was a reminder to me that sometimes it is the few negative comments that can stick in people's minds.

You want to see a negative band forum? Go to the Rush Counterparts forum.
90% of the band forums I have seen over the years have been either way too fanboyish or way too critical (constructive criticism is never a bad thing, but when over the top criticism is levied in seemingly almost every thread, it is no good). This is one of the very few that seems to have a good middle ground, which is probably why it is the one I have stuck with.
What I'm really excited about is to see the different approaches of the drummers to the songs they had to learn. I really hope to see a lot of variety.

Watched it again. I can't wait to see the full thing !
Watched it again. I can't wait to see the full thing !
Yea, I must have watched it like 20-25 times already. I can't get enough.
I think it was James.
I just realized one of my fav parts of the trailer is toward the end when The Count of Tuscany is playing in the background. The footage quickly flips thru each drummer as they play along to that exact part of TCoT and it ends with a big splash by Wildoer as MP hits the splash. Awesome. It starts at like 2:23.
Greetings all,
Somewhere-between-long-and-short-time reader and first-time poster. Been a DT fan for a few years now, so obviously I cannot speak from a perspective of having been there since the beginning but I do consider myself a bigger-than-average fan, these guys have been a positive influence on my personal musical landscape since 2006 and there are varying things I enjoy about every single one of their albums (besides the first which I have not heard yet).
Anyway, about this documentary: I think at first I was taken aback by the fact that DT actually had a doc made about the process of finding a new drummer, and resistant to the idea. Now after having thought about it and seeing the trailer for it, I think this doc looks to be not only very exciting and enjoyable but very insightful as well, a more personal look into the collaborative process that these guys share. Also, besides raising the stock of the band considerably, I believe it can only help the portfolio of each drummer who auditioned as well (If resumes actually exist for musicians, to be able to put on there 'Chosen to audition for progressive metal band Dream Theater' would be a dream come true for ANY drummer!)
In the end it is win-win for all involved: the band, the drummers, and the fans. I really am excited to see this thing when it is released and cannot wait until DT11 comes out!
Anywho, nice to meet all of ya and look forward to the lively discussions I will inevitably take part of!
On the plus side I got a funny feeling when I saw TL playing along to DT. He impresses me more than the other candidates.

I don't know if this has been said but I love the fact that it's James to give the news to the new drummer.

I can't decide whether that part is real or whether it was just staged for dramatic effect for the video.

So it looks like it isn't Lang as he looks like being at the Mexico City Meinl Drum Festival when DT are playing in Kiev

I have no problems with what they are doing. I can't wait to see more.

Every time I watch the clip I notice something different.
Look at 2:11. It is funny as hell.
James is saying "We've been touched by some magic here, but I think there is still more to come"
JR and JP are looking at him while he is speaking, while JM is clearly not even paying attention. He is looking the other direction with his arms crossed tapping his finger on his elbow. He is probably thinking, come on let's get this crap over with so I can go practice the new songs.
I'm actually also looking forward to the next video! I think this is a cool way to present all this and I just love seeing the other drummers and their approach. I noticed a lot of people on different forums, news pages etc that really think this is stupid and a sell out. Personally I love to as much of my favourite bands/musicians and also as much behind the scenes as possible.I completely agree, and it's great to see you post as such! We do have our share of cynics here on the forum, but actually the feeling towards this documentary has been overwhelmingly positive here (just go here - https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=22344.msg855308#top - to see 93% of people liking it) so I think compared to a lot of the internet, we don't do too badly.
I just think it's great to know that we'll see all these great drummers behind the scenes.Honestly, I can't wait for the rest of the videos/documentaries. I'm pumped!
Thanks a lot to all of you!
Makes it even more fun to post here.
Yes, it's very cool that most people like the documentary over here. I posted some thoughts on the Drummerworld forum but some people there really don't like it. I just think it's great to know that we'll see all these great drummers behind the scenes. I LOVE IT! :tup

+1
Like I said in the other thread, the documentary generates positive publicity not just for DT, but also ALL of the drummers involved.
Thank YOU for posting here and sharing your experiences and perspective on all this. We as fans are obviously eating it up. Since the "official" band forums shut down a few years ago and I set up this place, we've sort of felt like the bastard step-children, so we love it when band members and those close to them drop in and share information.
...Well, except for David Prater. We pretty much did the Internet equivalent of tarring and feathering him and running him out of here on a rail. But that's another story. :lol

Yeah, did Myung speak...or tackle James?
Glad you like Static Impulse! I'm really happy how that album came out. I know some of you hate my screaming and I'm sorry for that, but it was not me that entered the studio and said "Hey guys, I will do some screaming on some songs even though it's JLB's album and that's it". :lol Both James and Matt wanted this approach and when they found out that I did lead vocals (screams) on Christofer Malmström's (Darkane) solo album "Non-Human Level" and also some vocals on the Darkane albums they wanted me to do the growls.
Yes, Myung did speak.I believed everything you said up to this point :P
Ugh... What has happened to my favorite band? Cheesy reality show tactics? Horrible trailers? What happened to the DT that used to be about music and only the music?
I guess I'd be ok with all of this if they just changed their name and laid "Dream Theater" to rest. It seems that DT is more about theater and less about music. It is a sad state of affairs, an all time low, and I for one am close to writing all of this bullshit off.
I see your point. I guess I just had the urge to expand on when I said it was lame in a previous post. As always, I've been torn on the whole "DT without MP" situation. I guess at the moment I'm seeing it in a negative light.
I posted it probably just to get it off of my chest as opposed to simply being a jerk (although it probably looks like the latter!). Not trying to sh!t on DT. Just curious of anyone else has similar thoughts.

That's fine. I'm sure the band understands that surely this approach will not please everybody. But it seems most people are genuinely excited about this. Sorry you don't like it. Maybe the album will rekindle your interests if, as I'm sure it will be, the tunes are solid.
By far, the best thread here at DTF. I loved every moment of that thread.Thank YOU for posting here and sharing your experiences and perspective on all this. We as fans are obviously eating it up. Thanks a lot Mladen for you way too kind words!!! :) Very glad you enjoy the SI album! I think you were the first one that voted for me in the poll and after that I remembered your avatar. Later on I think you changed your vote though, correct? If that's the case I forgive you for that... :lolYeah, I did change my vote. As you've seen, there were some clues to who might and who might not be the drummer. I remember some of us believing Charlie Zeleny was the one for a while. At a certain point it was either Mangini, Minnemann or Lang, so I decided to move my vote to Mangini, as I recall. :) I'm pretty sure I placed my bet right - but it's yet to be seen. ;D
Very cool if you want to follow what I do next!!!

They have always been big fans of spectacle. This documentary still looks infinitely less cheesy then the Metropolis 2000 DVD for example.

Wait a second, you drummed on Seven Deadly Pieces?
I've been wanting to check that out since I first saw that trailer you posted, which must've been around 2006.
Great music, great drumming. And how awesome that you've been lurking here and now even posting here!
Thanks for all the info!
Wildoer
Yes, it's me playing drums, tambourine with my foot and wood blocks on the "Seven Deadly Pieces". That DVD is amazing and it features a lot of other cool stuff from Lalle Larsson and is a must have. If you guys haven't checked out Lalle Larsson YOU HAVE TO!!! He's a fantastic pianist/keyboard player and composer. He's in the studio as we speak recording a new "Agents of Mercy" album together with Roine Stolt (Transatlantic). Lalle also plays with Karmakanic and his own band Lalle Larsson's Weaveworld. Check that last band, features my good friend Walle Wahlgren on drums and he's amazing too! Lalle and me also did Electrocution-250 "Electric cartoon music from hell" together with american guitar wizard Todd Duane. Check this:

Hey, Peter! Thanks for posting here.Nice! :rollin
Talking about growls... can you please sing the following?
DAY AFTER DAY AND NIGHT AFTER NIGHT
REPLAYING THE EVENTS
DID THEY EVER SEE THE RED LIGHT?
OVER AND OVER
SCENE BY SCENE
LIKE A RECURRING NIGHTMARE
HUNTING MY DREAMS
How can you prepare
For what happened next?
No son should ever have to see his father such a mess
It's a miracle he lived
It's a blessing no one died
By the grace of God above
Everyone survived! ROOOAARRRRR!
Thanks!

They have always been big fans of spectacle. This documentary still looks infinitely less cheesy then the Metropolis 2000 DVD for example.
With this they get to generate a fair of amount of hype/publicity while giving us a peak at auditions. Are you saying you don't like the idea of people like seeing people like Marco Minneman or Thomas Lang jamming with Dream Theater? It may be a tad OTT, but I definitely rather have a good show out of it rather then them just say "the drummer is XXX" and move on.
Plus this way we get to see how whoever they chose melds with the band instead of guessing how they'll play based on on past projects so it should kill a fair amount of whining (though this is probably very wishful thinking on my pat :P).
I really doubt that the actual documentary is going to be "reality TV" style. All that stuff, I think, was added in the editing of the promo. They auditioned all 7 guys over a 3-day period. I don't see how that would lend itself to a reality-style elimination set-upI think that nobody here even was thinking that DT will make a reality show from choosing new drummer, with eliminations and etc.... It's just, you know, it's hard to focus on the music when you have camera's and fotographer's around you, especially in the audition time...

I think it is the Apprentice style, reality TV vibe the trailer has, is what rubs me the wrong way.
I'd love for a straight up documentary about this major time of change in DT history. Metropolis 2000 was produced by a member of DT who was trying to convey a story line. A completely made up story line. Cheesy or not, is was made BY DT. I'd put my life on the line in betting DT outsourced this latest production, which in turn has a more mainstream vibe (extra cheese).
Like I said before... If the songs are solid that's all that will matter to me in the end. I'll eat my negative words. But I won't be embracing the cookie cutter, reality TV BS that the public eats up.
I think that as Peter W is posting here himself, one can actually see how much DTF cares for musicians and DT in general. People might bitch here at times but if someone comes here being so nice and informative, nobody would even want to drive him/her off.
^Good post, if a bit poorly worded. :)
Sorry James. I'm not as nice as you. :(
How fucking stupid are these people? (1) Get a life and do other things with your time, and (2) You think DT are taking this long just to fuck with everyone? No! There are probably very good reasons why it has taken a long time, which will all be answered by THE DOCUMENTARY THAT YOU ARE PISSED ABOUT.
Morons.
Doesn't entirely make sense... if they already "know" it's Mike Mangini, why would they be getting antsy for an announcement? How fucking stupid are these people? Dude, what is wrong with you?
Look at it from the other side. I think it's fairly obvious that they didn't announce the drummer because they were waiting for the production of the documentary to finish so they could announce the drummer with the doc. But, the problem now is that after so much time, all drummers have been accounted for, and the announcement of Mangini as the drummer will be a total non-event. That's what people are reacting to.
rumborak
Yeah, TOX that was strange because I haven't seen anyone here (the closest being Loser1) calling DT "sell-outs". Maybe at Facebook and YouTube, yet again, what do you expect from a place like that (YouTube).
When I heard Dream Theater were going to have a huge audition, the first thing I thought was, "I hope they make it into a documentary!" I also wanted to see what kind of access they would give their fans, because you know if they were auditioning a new bassist, Portnoy would have had a camera there every second. I wanted to see if that kind of thing would continue.
Note the word continue. Dream Theater have always given fans crazy insight into their business, going over and above in the form of commentaries, documentaries and forum posts. The notion that Dream Theater are now about the "theater" and not the "dream" makes literally no sense at all. None. Nada. Zip.
Furthermore, what is so bad about making a trailer for the documentary? And even if it was the worst thing in the world, who says they made the trailer? Why couldn't Road Runner have put the trailer together? Or why couldn't the band's management have put the trailer together?
And what is with people being so impatient about the announcement of the new drummer? All I see everywhere is, "JUST ANNOUNCE IT ALREADY. STOP WITH ALL THIS REALITY TV BULLSHIT AND ANNOUNCE IT. DT ARE SELL-OUTS!"
Morons.
CrimsonSunrise, the unfinished projects MP wanted to finish sounds like the AA suite being played live, and maybe TBoT live.
WILDOER WAS HERE AND I MISSED IT. DAMN IT. :\
I'll be back soon, busy right now. Just checked in from my phone. You guys are great!!!
Cheers,
Peter
I for one am interested in the documentary, but the actual announcement ... eh.

CrimsonSunrise, the unfinished projects MP wanted to finish sounds like the AA suite being played live, and maybe TBoT live.
I agree with those two. I was thinking though, some kind of actual production project. Something he had invested time and money into, with the blessing of the band, that he wanted to complete to possibly get a financial return on.
CrimsonSunrise, the unfinished projects MP wanted to finish sounds like the AA suite being played live, and maybe TBoT live.
A bit off-topic, but I just paused the video just before James says "welcome you to the family" and Myung is actually smiling! It seems like that was a very very special moment for the DT guys. You could say it was "especially special."
The more I think about it , the more into this doc thing I am. I don't know of any other lineup change that's ever been handled quite like this. It seem these guys have come up with a very creative idea. I think this may be a fun thing. I only wish a version would come out that's easy to watch. I don't want to have to upgrade my internet speed for this.
CrimsonSunrise, the unfinished projects MP wanted to finish sounds like the AA suite being played live, and maybe TBoT live.
Unless I am completely mistaken about human psychology, those two projects will never happen. First of all, getting 4 guys who will learn the AA suite from beginning to end would be a major financial commitment for MP, and he would never be able to get the money back; where would he show it?
Second of all, Mike Portnoy playing a full hour of Dream Theater songs would be weeeiird. It would make him look as if he's clinging to the past.
TBOT has a bit of a better chance, but once again, I think MP will try to steer away from DT-related stuff for a while.

Sadly, I just found out Herman Rarebell was not one of the 7 drummers who auditioned.

Too much background music, but pretty nifty aside from that!Holy shit yes he does.
I am LOVING Mike Mangini. He's stellar on ANTR. Only at the 15 minute mark so far, though.
HOLY SHIT MYUNG'S VOICE WAS AUDIBLE OH MAN OH GOD
GNAAAAAH!!!! THAT WAS FUCKING AWESOME!!!!!
Ok, if it is Mangini, I'm sold on the guy. Great guy, great drumming.

Absolutely brilliant.
The next one looks fantastic as well. Bet the one James is floored by is Minnemann.

I really like want to screen cap this rare moment of full-blown, rumby enthusiasm.
I also tried keeping track of the songs played as clips throughout, but lost track. Seemed like a pretty good variety.

"Wait for Sleep"
"Learning to Live"
"You Not Me"
"Beyond This Life" (the acoustic outro at the very end)
"About to Crash (reprise)"
"The Best of Times"
"The Count of Tuscany"
Those are the ones I remember.
Wow. I am incredibly impressed by Mangini's drumming and his presence/personality. Well, one down, 6 to go. I could be wrong, but judging from some of the stuff earlier in the video, it seems like Roddy is second up and then maybe Priester (speaking of whom, even though the clips of his drumming are pretty short, I have to say I have to give him more credit than I previously did).I agree with Bosk! This was really great and entertaining to see! Real props to the band for doing this, its really great and I just loved it. The only part when I cringed slightly was the "next episode" part.
So, the audition songs are: ANTR, TDOE, and...a ballad that I did not pick up on. Did anyone else catch it, or was that still kind of kept under wraps?
I also tried keeping track of the songs played as clips throughout, but lost track. Seemed like a pretty good variety.
Lastly, as far as the whole "reality show" thing is concerned: Obviously, since it is a series of auditions competing for one spot, it definitely has a reality TV vibe to it. But as far as the traditional elimination reality tv show thing, I really only get that sporadically, mainly toward the end when they are doing the previews for the next one. Otherwise, it is pretty standard documentary-type format, which is great.
I had a big WTF moment when JR said that MP wanted the band to take a FIVE year hiatus. I thought he wanted just a year or so.And this too!
Icarus, it'll be worth the wait. Trust me.:lol
Icarus, it'll be worth the wait. Trust me.:lol
I'm watching it without sound, I'll have to wait until I get home, too. Trying to read MM's lips it seems he says "gotta learn the Camel spit" at some point.
Damn, that was simply amazing. Loved Mike's drumming, and he's one of the most energetic musicians I've ever seen. It would make a great contrast to the rest of the other band on stage.Per the video prductioin company epsiodes 2 & 3 will be released this week.
Also, I'm already excited for the next episode. My fears about this documentary haven't really come true so far, and I hope that the won't in the next episode either.

Forsaken, Constant Motion, and A Rite Of Passage were in there was well. I caught all the ones you mentioned except YNM.
On a side note, i was checking the comments on FB. It is very sad to me that the vas majority of them is like:
We all hate this game you guys love playing. Just release the name and besides whatever drummer you choose who isnt Portnoy is gonna make you lose a lot of fans. Everyone makes mistakes so just forgive him and bring him back. If you don't I hope whatever project he comes up with is better than whatever drummer you choose.
I think this band is getting a little too commercial... We don't need a reality show to tell us who is going to be playing with you. They're taking our love for the band and curiosity into a means of spreading the band's popularity. Time to un-like--
Childish is the word. Quit the bullshit and tell the name. Mike can never be replaced anyway... :-(
Only people that can replace Portnoy is Buddy Rich, and he's dead...and Neil Peart, he's with Rush.... So get Portnoy back...deal with the BS and move the FUCK ON !
I mean, i do respect all these people's opinion, but I just cannot figure out why in the world this could be the prevailing attitude among the whole DT fan community (and, instead, not among the long-time or diehard fans).
I absolutely loved this first part of the documentary. And, TBH, i didn't get all this reality-show vibe many pepole are bitching about. Believe me, reality shows in my country are much, much more annoying than any documentary could ever get, escpecially this one.
Anyway, I'm pretty happy with Mangini's playing, but more than anything, I was hooked by his antics. Man, what a positive and genuine attitude! I would be okay with him, but right now I'm looking forward to seeing the other drummers auditioning before endorsing anyone

Those people aren't real fans of DT. They're fans of MP, and want him back.Well said.
I loved the way he played the intro snare to TDOEN with one hand while spinning the other stick :lol :metal
This week is going to be incredible.
You're right, i probably didn't phrase that well my thought.
Like has been said, those people are the vocal minority.
And considering how disrespectful some of those comments are, I ain't gonna respect them, just because they, like everyone else, have the right to express their opinions.
Paraphrasing from my post at MP's house...
I'm floored by the mutual respect for all involved and by the quality of that video. Just that one lone episode
has changed my mind about some things and I want to take back anything I've said that had a negative
tone regarding the amount of time this took, and about my support of DT moving forward. I will support them
100% both in a live setting and via album purchases.
I want to personally thank the band for allowing us this view into the DT machine and the most significant
event in the bands history.
I also can't stress enough how awesome it is to hear all of the DT members. It totally changes the perception of the band.
You're right, i probably didn't phrase that well my thought.

I respect their right to express an opinion, a right that should never be questioned, but i definitely don't respect the way they do, and, of course, don't like WHAT they express at all.
As for the vocal minority thing, yeah, you are probably right, but I can't help to find all this negative reaction childish and unexplicable

You know, I have to say, if the others are done similarly, this is also great P/R for the 6 who didn't get chosen. I'm sure that by the end of this, all 7 are going to come across as the great drummers they are and as great guys to have in a band. So far, the doc is very well done and is painting everybody involved in a very positive light.
Wow that was so cool. Mangini seemed to have a really nice time playing with the guys. I'm curious to know if JLB was talking about Marco when he said "He was the most incredible. By far."
Only two more episodes left :caffeine:
And BTW, Mangini was not so amazing :|
This time next week we may know who the drummer is. I asked RR via twitter what the schedule is...Quoterrusa
There are three total and we should get through all of them this week.
Mangini came off as TOO showy. Nothing wrong with being showy, but he looked like he was trying too hard

No, I think he says "That was the most incredible. By far." Not "he." James could have been referring to anything with that comment--the audition as a whole, one particular part of it, etc.

Yeah, he has to let them know 'who he is' and what he'd bring to a live performance and so on. Sure it seems a little over the top in a secluded studio...but on stage it'd come across pretty well. This video was/is amazing and really 'makes up for' (so to speak) the lack of drummer communication from DT. I guess all the tweets from JR and the gang about being patient and it'll be great were true.Mangini came off as TOO showy. Nothing wrong with being showy, but he looked like he was trying too hard
True, he was rather showy. However I feel that in this situation you've gotta put it all out there. He's gotta make himself memorable not only for drumming, but for being a good showman. Just my opinion, though.
Mangini is a madman, and always has been. What you saw in the audition wasn't some schtick he put on, that's how he always is live. I saw him way back when with Extreme, and he put up one hell of a show.

I know I know... :0 but I would want it to be...he perfect, when I heard Angra's Aurora Consurgens I have question in my mind "who the is their drummer??!!" love that kind of drumming, it would be very interesting to hear him on a new DT album, but as I said... I'm pretty sure that he IS NOT the person ;)...and Poland also keeps fings crossed for Priester ;D

What I find interesting is that if the documentary is indeed three episodes long, almost one entire episode was devoted to Mangini.Well, actually half of the episode I'd say. The first half was the Mike Portnoy recapitulation.

well yah, minus the intro type deal.
that leaves 2 episodes for the other six. idk, just thought i'd throw that out there.
Same here. I know this really is a horrible reason to not want somebody in, but... Donati looks really old in these videos.

This. It's completely possible that whoever auditioned first was going to end up getting a bit more screentime, since the first audition is a good time to give the viewer an idea of the overall process. What I find interesting is that if the documentary is indeed three episodes long, almost one entire episode was devoted to Mangini.Well, actually half of the episode I'd say. Also, take into account Mangini's audition was the first one. I think that itself acknowledges a bit more of time.
Less than half in fact. But yeah it could be that the other episodes are longer, or that the editing for some drummers makes their slot shorter than the others. Plus, for the first one it will naturally be longer because it shows us what the process was as well as the drummer, whereas we pretty much know the process now. :PWhat I find interesting is that if the documentary is indeed three episodes long, almost one entire episode was devoted to Mangini.Well, actually half of the episode I'd say. well, it's official. at the end of the documentary, the new drummer will be revealed.Yeah just got the same one ;) true ;)

Hi Everyone,
We wanted to take a minute to thank all of you who signed up and watched the trailer on Thursday. This is an incredibly exciting time for all of us and we know that the anticipation has been, well, uncomfortable to say the least!
Over the next few days we hope that you will enjoy this very special documentary we've put together which literally invites everyone into the rehearsal room during the audition process and ultimately reveals who we chose as the new drummer in Dream Theater.
This is unlike anything we've ever done before and we felt that this would be a unique way of sharing our experience with all of you as a sincere thank you to everyone who has listened to, believed in and supported DT throughout the years.
Beyond all the drama and presentation, it always comes back to the thing that unites us all: our common passion to create, perform and listen to great music! To that end we are in the studio working hard on our next album and can't wait to deliver it to the world and to see all of our friends on tour.
Until then, please go to Roadrunner's YouTube channel to begin watching the documentary now!
Much love,
Dream Theater
The only thing that could make this MORE exciting would be if...oh, I dunno...maybe Peter would post more instead of just being a tease and lurking in the thread. :eyebrows:Yeah, it's not like purple names are very common around here :lol

And can we talk about the new riff idea they threw at Mangini? How sick did that new riff sound?
I had a big WTF moment when JR said that MP wanted the band to take a FIVE year hiatus. I thought he wanted just a year or so.Same. I was about to tell myself something like "Aaaarrghhh....swallow the rage..."
That first episode was so incredible. Words can't describe my love for this freaking band right now.This.
Yes let's talk about new riff. More metal than BC&SL.
That first episode was so incredible. Words can't describe my love for this freaking band right now.
And Mangini was amazing. I've reached a point where I'd be disappointed regardless of which drummer they choose, I want all the seven drummers to join the band. They're all so awesome, personally and musically.
I swear the band don't know what the word "literally" means.
"We have literally been a family"

For some reason I want the new drummer to be the British guy. Don't know anything about any of the 7 drummers, but I like the idea of a British guy in Dream Theater.

I really hope footage of the full auditions is made available eventually, it seems a waste to have footage of these amazing drummers jamming and only seeing short clips.
Uh...that clip is from A Nightmare To Remember.
Can anyone confirm if the music bit at around 16:20 is new material? Because it sounded awesome? Truly melodic prog metal!
Would be epic if Peter Wildoer actually did the Day after day, with REAL GROWLS. :metal :metal :metal :metal :metalHaha I wonder what they played during Mike's Day after day section is ANTR :neverusethis:

I like how at about 16:40, Joran is throwing all these time signatures at him, and you can tell he's like, "Crap, I really want to write this down, but I don't want to look stupid," and then when Jordan says "You wanna right this down?" you can visibly see the relief on his face. :lol
God. I was happy with Mangini before but this just doubled my enthusiasm.This. An incredible first part, I am so incredibly excited about this documentary. :metal
Not only did Myung speak, but he smiled too! :hefdaddyThat was incredible. Go Myung! :hefdaddy
Great cliffhanger ending again
JLB to JP:
- That was the most incredible...By far! ::)
Awesome, awesome clip. I have thought since MP leaving the biggest thing the band would miss is the live setting. Mangini I think can fill those shoes. Man the guy is crazy! Love his energy. I would be happy if he get's the job.
I wonder why the other auditions are in a different studio. Maybe these 3 days of auditions were far apart scheduling wise. Seems strange to set everything up and then move it the next day.
Anyhow, can't wait for the rest of the doc!
I just assumed they couldn't use the same room for more than a day or else the amount of awesome coming from behind the drum kit would destroy it. They just don't build 'em to withstand so much awesome for prolonged periods of time!Probably ;)
Does anyone else get the vibe that Mangini genuinely wants to be in DT?

I think it's safe to comment on this. Auditions were moved the second day to another room but at the same place, S.I.R. Studios. Don't know the reason but I think it was because the new room was bigger.
:lol
Another one I noticed from MP speaking in 2007 - "We've been together more than half our lives, and we've shared an entire lifetime together"
wat
No, I think he sang. A lot of the emotion of a song is conveyed by the singer, and you wouldn't really get the full feel of the song and how a drummer fit in if you didn't have your singer.
Anyone think there will be a release of the entire audition process? Hopefully they recorded the sessions, being in a studio and all.
Peter, how was James' singing on The Dance Of Eternity?
Peter, how was James' singing on The Dance Of Eternity?
I would agree. In fact, I would expect that not all 7 auditions went as gloriously as MM's audition. So, by choosing the footage they show they can still show every person in the best light possible.Agreed, by picking and choosing what gets shown, they can make sure everyone looks good.
rumborak
so some approved, and some didnt?
weird
Are we sure that is an actual quote from Marco? Maybe that isn't his real facebook page? He does not have that page listed on his official website.
and we have plans for a trio project with John P and Jordan together
By "soap opera," he may simply be referring to all the collective drama about Mike's departure, the drummer search, and the holdup on disclosing who was picked. I don't think he is necessarily referring to the documentary.Possibly, although the "soap opera DT episodes" seems pretty obviously about the documentary.
(and I wouldn't be surprised if he were also just throwing stuff out there to throw us off the trail; as I've said before, I think I know who it is. But as far as the evidence that is out there, there is only one drummer I can say with absolute certainty is definitely "out")
Also, didn't Peter Wildoer say that he wasn't auditioning then info came out that he WAS auditioning anyway? Could be the same thing here... I'm still hoping for Marco lolAre we sure that is an actual quote from Marco? Maybe that isn't his real facebook page? He does not have that page listed on his official website.
+1.
I looked for it on his official website, but I couldn't find anything. I'll keep looking for some form of verification though, if there is one, just give me a minute
By "soap opera," he may simply be referring to all the collective drama about Mike's departure, the drummer search, and the holdup on disclosing who was picked. I don't think he is necessarily referring to the documentary.

Have to say, if it IS him then those comments are a bit of a dickish move. For that reason, I hope it's a fake account, because he seems like a nice guy.
Hey, I just noticed when viewing the footage of NYC...did anyone notice that the sky was clear and frigid? The air was thick and stll?
Depends. If he didn't give permission as he says, then I'd say he has every right to be upset.Well, they legally wouldn't be able to release it if he hadn't given permission, so I think we can discount that. It's possible that it was included with lots of other stuff about the filming that he signed (he will have signed something and he will have obviously know that it was being filmed as he'd have seen the cameras) but I don't see what else he would have expected.

But aside from that, writing them off as "silly soap opera" episodes while they're still in the process of being shown would be a lame thing to do, regardless of whether he was justified or not, and I think any decent person would have at least waited before saying something that bitchy. And that is why I am sceptical that it's a real account. :P

I think the whole documentary thing is awesome! I am saddened by the fact that my wish for Bobby J to be the new drummer will not come to pass. As for technical ability, I think any of those who auditioned would have the chops to pull this off. Chemistry is the one factor we really cannot speculate on, but as far as creativity (subjective I know), I think Preister, or Roddy have the edge there.
wildoer is doing some hardcore lurking. seen him on the active list all day. awesome

James post posted on FB that he finished 3 tracks last week.
hehe, and by accident i posted it in the wrong topic LOL. :rollinJames post posted on FB that he finished 3 tracks last week.
Damn, beat me to it. :lol
Wait, help me out there. Will the band announce the drummer in the 3rd episode? And will the 3rd episode be here by Friday?
Also, about James' comment in the end of the episode - even if he actually talks about a drummer being "the best so far", I don't worry about it. Obviously all these drummers can play really great, but like you all know, they said they chose the drummer both by skills and chemistry.
By the way, remember how James talked about Mangini being his drummer in some of his solo albums? Imagine how it'd be look in Peter's audition: "Oh yeah, he played drums in one of my solo albums too. These loyal folks are all my trained pirates arrrrrrr"
(Sorry, I suck at pirate language XP)

You know, I'm not one to soon forget but I guess I always will remember that these were the best of times.
Why not? As homo-erotic as we are here on DTF, I don't see why they can't give each other a manly kiss on the cheek.
........ what is the 3rd test? JP said to Mike "you passed all three tests! The song test, the jam test, <cut>".
rumborak
OK, I just noticed that Mangini and Jordan gave each other a cheek kiss at 19:45. I can't see it too well from the camera angle, but i heard it. Is it just me? Maybe I'm mishearing.
Anyway, no cheek kisses in DT!

Oh my god, it's the reality TV editing, and it's terrible.
And he played on James'...stuff.
