When I mentioned sampling, I wasn't making a point about weather or not it was a creative thing to do. I was merely using it as an example of how one person will use bits and pieces of another person's work-rightly or wrongly-to "enhance'" their own...

...And yes, Dream Theater is guilty of doing the same thing with all of their movie sound bites, among other things.

But weather sampling is "creative" or not, I still think that-at least sometimes-it's a good example of what meant when I talked about lack of originality.

Get on topic or this thread is history.

Just going to drop my 2 cents about using samples...

I don't see anything wrong with taking a portion of music someone else made and making it your own or using it as a basis. Sure, maybe some people, myself included, would rather make my own music 100%, but there's definitely some creative use of samples and remixing other songs out there.

This one in particular, not really a fan of, but I'm not going to shit on this guy for using samples. Although, I've never heard German rap before, so I thought that was interesting. :P

This was a particularly bad example of German rap. I would count this as a good example.

Actually, let me make a correction:  Get on topic and stop the insults or official warnings and/or bans will ensue.  Kowtowboy, Outcrier, and chaossystem in particular, you are headed for bans if you do not knock it off.

In my humble opinion, German rap is actually of very high quality. This is probably controversial, but I think the language more naturally lends itself to rap than English does, even though rap was developed in English.

If you want to get technical, rap has existed for thousands of years, particularly in Africa. Rap is basically defined as music with vocals that put more emphasis on rhythm and less on melody, thus a lot of traditional African music can be defined that way. But if you mean "modern" rap as it has existed since the early 80s (?), then you would be right. :P

This is only based on that song, but I also feel that German is actually better suited to rap than English. Conversely, I feel like English is a better language for melodic vocals than German.

OK..

...but...

...HOW was that last thing I said off-topic?

I talked about sampling and how some "artists" in any given field will take other people's work and reshape it as their own.

...Which is EXACTLY what this German rapper did with the DREAM THEATER song "ANOTHER DAY!"

I don't see anything wrong with what happened in the link in the OP. It's unfortunate that a great DT song got sampled into a bad rap song, I hope there isn't a copyright issue. I happen to hate rap, but I'm not going to blame the rapper for using a song I like in something that I cringe and run away from.
Everything is immaterial. Do you know that reality is immaterial? This is not reality.

One time I was working in the studio for a rapper... he really was genuinely terrible though.... Maybe i can post a clip, anyway he brought in some 'beats' and this was one of them but it was longer, it used the first 4 bars instead of the first two i think... anyway it was Another Day. I nearly fell out of my chair. He had no idea why. So I think this 'beat' has been going around for a few years at least

You know, I gotta say, while the majority of this remix is maybe "meh", this switch to the sax solo is pretty damn cool. Shows you how much DT could benefit from a good low end.

This is only based on that song, but I also feel that German is actually better suited to rap than English. Conversely, I feel like English is a better language for melodic vocals than German.

This is just my take on it, but it might have to do with German being a generally harsher sounding language than English which lends itself better to the more rhythmic approach to rap vocals. The English language has a more flowing feel to it which works better with the more legato sound of melodic vocals.

Onto the original topic, there's nothing wrong with sampling when done properly. This example isn't too bad and it's kinda cool to hear Dream Theater music in the context of another genre. But a lot of sampling is done poorly. Talk Dirty by Jason Derulo is a great example of bad sampling in my opinion. The original song is Hermetico by Balkan Beat Box and Jason Derulo is basically just singing over it. There's barely any arranging going on to change up the song. It's essentially just an alternate version of a pre-existing song.

Yeah, this is what i think bad sampling is (there's some exceptions though).
