Machine Head - Unto the Locust
« on: September 25, 2011, 08:09:42 AM »
Anyone else excited for this album?  It comes out Tuesday and I can't wait.  The Blackening was easily one of my favorite metal albums ever so it will be interesting to see how they follow that up.  From what I've read, they are more experimental/progressive yet have stuck with their metal roots.  They have been a strange band in that their first two albums were both very well received, their middle two were  basically horrible and not well received, and their two latest albums have been great comeback albums.  So it's interesting to see where the go from there.  The reviews have been great so far but can't wait to hear it for myself.

I was hoping for more too...  But The Blackening only has 8 songs and that album will NEVER get old.

Got it yesterday, really liking it! After two listens, I feel like the highs aren't as high as those on The Blackening, but it's a more consistently good record throughout.

Ariich is a freak, or somehow has more hours in the day than everyone else.

It's definitely gonna take a few listens.  It doesn't immediately jump out at me like 'Through The Ashes Of Empires' (my personal favorite MH album) did.  I do dig the cover of Rush's "Witch Hunt", though.

Song ratings!!!!!!

Darkness Within
Locust
Who We Are
I Am Hell (Sonata In C#)
Pearls Before Swine
Be Still and Know

The only thing I am sure of is the top 3 but all the songs range from good to amazing.

After 1 listen to this album, I gotta say it's absolutely fantastic.  What a great bunch of songs. Wow.

I haven't heard the album, but I just have to say that I Am Hell (Sonata in C#) is an awesome song title.
Gadough isn't Hitler. He's much, much worse.

Haven't fully immersed myself in it yet, but I've thrown it on for a few casual breeze throughs. I enjoy what I hear. It will be hard to top Blackening, as that was one of the best metal releases of the last decade.
I do like the opener. Quite diverse.

I think this has potential to easily top The Blackening.

My sentiment towards this album remains the same:

Machine Head by the numbers, bar a few touches here and there. The heights the band reached in the last few albums are nowhere to be seen here. Nothing outright bad is happening, it's just not really spectacular, and when you think about it, it's understandable why. This album was quite unlikely to have the impact that TTAOE did, because that was their first after Superstinker and such a great return to form, or that the Blackening did, because that was them trying something quite different and upping the ante and taking their sound to another level. After those two, this album just seems an attempt at a holding pattern, and so, kind of unsurprisingly, it delivers nothing terrible, but nothing brilliant either.
