Exactly what it sounds like. For instance, I'm currently an undergrad student, but I'm an aspiring green consultant. I want to work for a company as someone who helps make their production process (if not the products themselves) more environmentally friendly.
And you?

I flip burgers and yell at waitresses.
-
I work in resource and financial management for an IT consulting company
I flip burgers and yell at waitresses.
:lol
-
I flip burgers and yell sweet nothings at waitresses.
I knew it.
I'm a site manager for a company that does pallet sortation for a Wal Mart Distribution Center. And let me tell you Wal Mart pushes "Green" very much so. We separate wood, plastic, cardboard and plasitic, ect for them.
-
I'm an undergrad Computer Scientist on a Masters course, not totally decided upon what I what to specialize in yet however.

Undergad, junior year. Currently majoring in business, I guess in accounting but I actually have no idea what I want to do. Definitely not accounting. I'm leaning towards computer science, but that just means I will have to do that whole program in about 1.5 - 2 years.

Soon will have a masters in clinical counseling, hopefully will get a doctorate in Psychology.
That is while I finish my book, and then sell it for millions.

I was going to get my MFA, then decided it wasn't worth the expense because unless I intend to teach, it won't really benefit me. And I am not one who should be teaching.
-
I have "just a B.A" and am an office worker analyst--(sometimes analist) at a law enforcement HQ
-
Unemployed, don't know what I'm doing next cause I have no idea what I wanna be or do. Trying to develop indifference for the matter so I can have peace of mind but I can't yet :loser:

I mean I'm a completed Politics major, but I was never planning to run for office or anything, most it would be was some administrative work in public policy. And over the last year I discovered that I could turn my mortal fear of climate change into a career, so that's what I'm hoping to do. :lol

I wish. I'd be living the high life.

I have a BS degree (pun intended) in Industrial Technology, currently finishing up an MS in Education by the end of this summer. I'll either start my 1st year of teaching this next school year or see if I can't use my BS degree to land a position in a somewhat recovering job market in the Silicon Valley.

Dude, that's such bull!

Yeah, it was a lame joke. :P

I'm studying MIS. I've been thinking about getting into app developement for mobile platforms. Not 99cent games, but useful stuff. My biggest complaint with tablets right now is mobile versions of webpages, and applications for companies or websites that lack content and information. I want to change that, while at the same time make it simple to navigate, and maybe the preferred way of viewing content.
-
I drive semi tractor trailers.
-
I'm a freelance 3D animator (see sig), currently working on a music video that some of you have had the joy of hearing me bitch about daily.
I'm also working on making some 3D mobile games.

I'm a funeral intern/soon to be funeral director.
My sister is a funeral director as well. You guys have all of my respect for doing what you do!
As for me, I'm an undergraduate looking to get a degree in english to someday become a journalist. But I'd much rather work at my hometown golf course where I have been for 5 years :(
-
I want to study business and double major in Entrepreneurship and Human Resources. After that, I want to attend Culinary School (nothing major) and then open up my own restaurant

The group I work in is called Data Center Operations, we run the largest data center for one of the biggest banks.

Currently in second year of my bachelor in Physics. Will probably do master in Physics or Mathematics.

I work with IT at our local welfare office. That includes IT support for the staff, updating our website, taking photos for information material, gathering data for statistics, among other stuff.
In short, I browse DTF and drink coffee all day.

A BS degree is a Bachelor of Science, i.e. a 4-year degree at a university. In this case, I'm using both interpretations. :sadpanda:
An MS is a Master of Science, typically an additional 2-3 years of coursework plus original research.

I flip burgers and yell at waitresses.
I'm going to Culinary School so I can do this, while I'm doing this I'm also working at a working at one of those restaurant type places where I wash dishes and, peel the potatoes and such, and I even make some of the food every once in a while.

Thanks for clarifying Fiery :tup

It's good that you're getting a taste of the business while in school. I've seen way too many people spend buttloads of cash on a culinary degree thinking they're gonna be the next Thomas Keller just because they have Grandma's untouchable lasagna recipe, only to realize it's really hard fucking work. For example, when I finish typing this, I will go to work, clock in at 9am, bust out a party of 50 while cooking 100+ lunch covers. Then I will finish V-Day prep, open at 5:30pm, bust out 300 dinners. Then after I will spend about an hour doing orders, prep list, and administrative crap, and hopefully leave by 11:00pm. Good luck man, it's a great job, but you have to earn the fun. :lonestar:
Oh, and welcome to DTF. :)
-
I should add that, in addition to my official Designer title, I'm also unofficially the IT guy, project coordinator, operations manager and overall "problem fixer" of megalithic proportions.
-
Finishing up my Ph.D. in Organic and Polymer chemistry - I'm sure you can figure out the school from my handle if you're American. Just dotting i's and crossing t's on dissertation as it is written and been editted, and getting ready to defend in the next month.
I've had my eyes set on university professorship, but its looking more and more like a post-doc is going to be a stepping stone.
I also used to play backgammon and poker for fairly serious money, but those have dried up as I don't live near a casino - or anything really, other than trees - and I don't trust online sites anymore and have withdrawn my money from them. I just don't have the time to drive 3.5 hours to Charleston, WV anymore, and even then it's only poker.

I work at Target part time CAN I HELP YOU FIND SOMETHING SIR PLEASE PUT THAT BACK WHERE YOU FOUND IT OR I WILL DROP KICK YOUR CHILD.

Have a degree in design management- engineering, interior, architecture, graphic... don't really use it.
I'm considered a "Quality Associate" for an aesthetic device company and currently filling their document control position until its filled. Then I'll get ISO certified to do internal audits, process improvements...
Anyone snoring yet? Most people find my work very dry and boring I'm sure.
-
Anyone snoring yet? Most people find my work very dry and boring I'm sure.
I always assume people do for me too. Which is why I never say anything more than "I'm an engineer for a medical device company." Busting out into "well... I do process improvements, making things more efficient and cheaper, I validate processes to ensure that the quality of our products will always be high..." basically makes people glaze over. Although there are very few jobs out there that people are really interested in what you're doing.
-

At least you have work that pays.
I often debated whether to choose something I love and make little money, or choose something I'm good at but don't particularly love and make good money. I chose the latter.

Sounds like you and I are in the same business. The company I work for isn't considered a medical device in some countries, but is in others. It all depends on the regulatory body.

Wow! I flip waitresses and eat burgers...who knew!
I also pretend to write books. It pays the bills. Well.

Going to genetic school (last year hopefully) and biotechnology assistant at lab. Not so much money but its experience means a lot.

Thank You lonestar, working and being in school at the same time doing the same thing shows me that it is hard work, but it's work I love. Luckily I've had great Chef Instructors in both high school and College to help and teach me. Also thank you for the luck and the welcome. ;D

I work as a field engineer for a firm that designs telecommunications sites for many of the major carriers. Most of my work is in the Great New York City area including the four real boroughs, Staten Island, parts of Jersey and Westchester/Rockland counties. I deal with a lot of shitty rooftops.
-
I work in a deli full time, while trying to save up to get my pilots licenses. Was doing pretty good in college but I just couldn't find a major that really satisfied me enough to commit to, so I decided to invest in something fun instead. ;D

I am currently a waitress at my Nanna's pub,
Considering I want to go into acting, that's probably the only work I'll ever get into. Either that, or sucking director cock.

Right now, I'm in high school. I plan on going to college in NYC to study philosophy and then I plan on getting a PhD and being a modern day philosopher/professor. That's the plan now. I know, I'm young, blah blah blah. I really think that is what is going to happen.
-
What can you do with a philosophy degree?

I have a master´s degree in classical percussion and i´m spending my days wondering what the :censored am i suppose to do with that?

If you enjoy it do it. You'll regret it otherwise. At least that's what I believe. That's also why I chose to study in sound/music even if I never get a permanent job. At least I'll do something I like.
-
What can you do with a philosophy degree?
Go to law school if you're academically qualified. Other than that, I'm not sure what people with philosophy degrees do.

People usually laugh (you may too) when they hear I want to do culinary school only to open a restaurant dealing with burgers, BBQ, smoking meats, and sandwiches. A real cool homestyle restaurant with all homemade stuff. I could go on about my vision

I graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in 2010, and have worked, unfortunately, as a bank cashier since. It pays the bills despite being wholly unsatisfying (you wouldn't believe the amount of targets even someone at the bottom rung of the ladder in a bank is lumbered with to keep their jobs). I've applied to do a Masters in Social Work starting this September, though I'm gonna need to refinance a personal loan to be able to afford the living costs, and keep working 2.5 days a week alongside studying. I want to work in the field of drug and alcohol addiction.
I spent 6 months last year volunteering in the rehabilitation wing of a male prison, facilitating the running of the 12-step program and assessing clients for their suitability, plus the general admin shiz, and it made me more certain that that's the area I wanna go into. I'm not hell bent on getting into a prison-based job anymore as it's an incredibly tough environment for a young female but I do want to work in some kind of counselling role. I took a bit of a hiatus to pursue the night class I'm doing at the moment, which is just a basic counselling skills one, I won't be a qualified counsellor by the end but I will be qualified for the majority of 'counselling' jobs within organisations that deal with addiction. If I can pull off this Masters financially and emotionally (I'm chronically sick) then I'll be a qualified Social Worker with lots of doors opened to me.
I never wanted to do anything in Music, I just studied it as I loved it and I'm good at it, I don't regret it one bit. I've also been a volunteer Samaritan (www.samaritans.org) for the past four years which is amazing, hard work and emotionally tough but just the most rewarding thing I've ever done, it's a true privilege to be able to be there for desparate/suicidal people when they need somebody with them the most.

How can you volunteer to be a descendant of ancient Israeli tribes?

Not at all man, that's a great vision. What you learn in culnary school can only enhance the quality of homestyle cuisine, plus you learn a lot about the numbers side of cooking, of which there is a lot of. I love homestyle shit, my buddy and I do competition BBQ, it is so much fun, and the food out of his smoker is godlike. Much of my stuff is directly derived from American, mostly southern, classics, which I enhance via french methods, but it has it's roots here. So many chefs are so cumdrunk off of Food Network and Top Chef and shit like that that good mom and pop joints are scarce, especially where I live, and those places always have the best grub. You go to fine dining for the experience, you go to the local cafe to fucking eat!!!
-
I'm not a chef at all (just learned enough to cook decently since I've lived alone a few years), but Food Network and Cooking Channel seem to have quite a lot of shows devoted to homestyle recipes and diners that do that.
-

True, I may have worded it wrong, especially about Food Network. They are cumdrunk when it comes to Top Chef though. I too am guilty of this one, judging my own abilities based on what I see on the show instead of just cooking what I love. We even do pools for the damn show(I lost a while back when the hot brunette with the tattoos got kicked off).

No , seriously i´m working as a freelancing percussionist in Sweden and have done my share of auditions but i´m kind of in a moment in my life where i´m wondering if it´s more a fantasy than reality.

I am a shift manager at Starbucks and a Biblical Studies undergrad at Dallas Baptist University. Not sure what I want to do with the degree yet, but I am currently interviewing with a parachurch ministry that gives its time to high school students.

Why, thank you both! I know it's cheesy but it has always felt like my 'calling' (urgh even typing that is cheesy) to help people/animals, and I most want to help disadvantaged/vulnerable people that most of society has given up on, because I try see the individual behind the behaviour and seem able to look past pretty much every barrier in order to do what I can to help somebody change their life and be there to support them emotionally along that journey. So far I have yet to meet a person whom I wasn't able to see 'some' good in, even though they've committed the most despicable of crimes. But I think I'm pretty realistic and rational with it, definitely don't see things through rose-tinted glasses. And I find addiction fascinating, and one of the most-needed areas for helpers. S'all good!
I got good news today that my hours have been increased to full-time at the bank, so I can afford to save up for my Masters :)
-
I work part-time in retail, and I'm about 3/4 of the way to a B.S. in Business Economics. I'm trying to decide whether I should go back and finish that degree or try to pursue something else altogether. Either way, I don't particularly want to take out another loan right now, so I'm basically in a holding pattern until inspiration strikes.

Master of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine
Though right now, I'm taking a course in biochemistry from Berkeley's extension since I found that to practice in Washington State, I'd have to have a course in that. Plus, looking for a part-time job to tide me over until I have my license.

Used to be music. Now...nothing.

I thought "oriental" wasn't really an acceptable term anymore
-
I sometimes hear older people use it to describe rugs and decorations, but that's it, AFAIK.
-
I thought "oriental" wasn't really an acceptable term anymore
Hence why in Washington State it's been changed to getting a license as an "East Asian Medicine Practitioner."
In any case, the groups that accredit the schools, draw up the board exams, etc all refer to Oriental Medicine in their name, regardless of what might be politically correct. And since a good portion of the people running those organizations are from east Asia themselves, I think they would've lodged a complaint about the name long ago. :)

You're the perfect cover-boy. You look so menacing for an IT guy. :lol
That's actually a subject that interest me a great deal. It's a shame it was such a fluff piece.

I'm studying comp sci, to do... something.

Well, my two big dreams have always been to play drums in a (metal/prog metal) band and to be a filmmaker. I do jam with a guy and we are sort of an unofficial band at the moment are are looking for members. I start film school in April and I'm not sure how that is going to turn out because I have no work and no money (looked my ass off and couldn't get hired by anybody. I had a brief stint at Tim Hortons and they shit-canned me after less than a week). The school is in Toronto and I live in Kitchener. I'm hoping I'll be able to commute via GoBus or GoTrain. But what I would really like to happen is for to my mother to get a place in Toronto and I can stay with her while I go to school and I can come back here on week-ends to visit my dad, dogs, and cat. Mom just got out of cancer surgery and will be healed a little before I have to start school, so I'm hoping that she wants to/can help me out in that department. If not, then I think I am kind of fucked.
And this shit pisses me off, too, because I am twenty-one years-old and I want to get on with my career. I haven't really done anything with my life since I finished high school and I am sick of not having anything to do and not having a job. Believe me, I feel like the laziest piece of shit alive. Hopefully everything works out so I can do the things that I want to do.
Another thing that I've always wanted to do, was be a novelist. I have always loved to tell stories (I guess that comes with the filmmaking territory, as well), so I would love to work as a novelist. If there was a way I could accomplish all three, that would be fucking amazing. But I'll do what I can, because I need a career and do something with my life.

I am a color correction editor at a post production facility. I help make reality tv look acceptable to the masses. About to start working on a feature film next week though and am super excited to get my second one under my belt.

That's pretty interesting. Can I ask how you got into that field?

How can you look at yourself in the mirror helping make that canned shit?

I was a commercial banker for almost 20 years. Got up one day and said F you to it. Started my own financial consulting company 8 years ago.

The paycheck son.

I graduated from film school, got an internship the day after I graduated. Worked real hard and learned everything I could there, eventually started getting booked into color correct sessions. It's been a cool progression. I've come a long way in a year and a half.

Studied to be an economist (BCom Hons. (Economics)).
Became an economist by trade (coming up to two years).
Life is good.
Will (potentially) be moving into a policy development portfolio soon (State Development, so like planning, infrastructure and the like), have an inkling that the GM of the policy team wants to give me a go in the role. Fingers crossed because its a great portfolio and a nice bump up in pay - plus I'll still be doing economics
-
I'm studying English literature and I have no interest in teaching.
I think I'm fucked.
Except I'm minoring in marketing, and I'll be taking a lot of technical writing classes. So I hope to have some sort of business career with a writing overlap, or vice-versa.
-
I'm applying for a job in social media marketing. Hope it works out.
-
I am currently a waitress at my Nanna's pub,
Considering I want to go into acting, that's probably the only work I'll ever get into. Either that, or sucking director cock.
:rollin
Ali, you're the fucking best :tup I also got great joy out of this because I too am a waitress.

I'm starting to get sick. I really need a job like the one I've applied for. I just need a job that I can pay for Courtney's schooling with. I'm fucking sick. I haven't heard anything back. They had a different job description on their website from where I found the listing. It says you need to have had a "successful social media campaign". The fuck? It's an entry level job. Jesus Christ that makes me nervous.

yeah, when they asked me to do the interview, they said it was going to be an "in depth examination of the struggles that I.T. managers face" with respect to monitoring. I'm guess you read it, and if you did you know there was really nothing at all that was "in depth" about it.

I know I am :P And who cares if it's a shitty career? Waitressing rocks!

Yeah, pretty light weight.
It's interesting, though. I'm the de facto IT guy where I work, and since I know how to run the computers, I'm usually who friends and family will ask to sort out their issues. Since I have to see these people, I go as far out of my way as possible to not see what they're up to. I really don't want to know what some of these people's interests are. :lol

Studying music education currently. Loving every second of it so far. I'm not entirely sure what I want to do with it. I could teach music at pretty much any level high school and below. On top of or instead of that, I would probably make one hell of a freelance guitar/trumpet/piano teacher.
Something I'd really love to do is conduct an orchestra that backs Devin Townsend as he plays the entirety of Deconstruction in a live setting. I would gladly give anything for that opportunity.

Very interesting reading this thread.
I'm a Sales Director for a $27B computer/electronics distribution company. Work from home, but end up traveling a lot for meetings in our various offices (Phoenix, San Antonio, Denver), and conferences. I have a BA in Economics, but don't use any of those educational skills. Degree's are just a stepping stone to prove that you can do something for four years, and be successful. I went right into sales after University.

Interviewed today for a summer internship with Northwestern Mutual. Fingers crossed!

Interviewed for a QA Associate job at a power inverter manufacturer (30kW to 1.2MW). I'd be the face of QA at the plant (only about 25 people) and would interact weekly with the VPs and President. It's a temp to perm position, and I'll be getting my offer on Monday. I'm hoping it's enough to be able to finally move out on my own.

See, now today I did something really cool and this is one of the things that make me love my job. One of our clients is Children's Hospital. My group is currently involved in a massive project to document/improve their HVAC Controls Ethernet Backbone. To give you an idea of the scope of this network, it covers an area that is approximately 160 square miles. Their main campus is in Boston, then they have smaller campuses in Peabody and Waltham. The Peabody and Waltham campuses are connected back to the main Boston campus over a leased (private) line SSL VPN that we designed, programmed and installed for them. There is a 30-ton Air Handling Unit on the roof of the Peabody campus that has been having all kinds of problems and the manufacturer has been giving the hospital the run-a-round with supporting it. They claimed that the only way they could figure out what the problem is with the unit is if they had 24/7/365 remote access to it from their offices in Kansas City, MO. Basically, they were trying to blow the hospital off because the truth is we all know the unit (which costs about $175,000) is faulty - and it's still under warranty, but the warranty language stipulates that the customer must provide remote access.
Today, I installed a computer in the main Boston campus data center that is connected to a router in Peabody (over the VPN) and the router is relaying all RDP packets directly to the Ethernet Port on the rooftop unit's interface. What I have done is I've made it possible, with the right credentials, IP address and TCP port offset information, to remotely connect to this rooftop unit from ANY computer on earth that is connected to the internet and capable of running RDP. This even includes Apple computers and/or iPads or iPhones.
We just had a teleconference with the company that makes the rooftop unit and they were flabbergasted because we're all pretty sure that they thought this little clause in the fine print of the warranty was going to prevent them from having to replace this defective unit. But I have effectively shoved that defective rooftop unit up their ass with this custom engineered solution. :lol
Now they either have to fix it or replace it.

Mostly what happens when you shoot a Free Electron Laser at some molecules.

Alright. As you might've read I'm hoping to be able to make it to a PhD as well. But first my bachelor's degree and then my master's. I'm not even sure I'm going to master in physics, might be mathematics... Or maybe something completely different when perhaps I don't even make it there. Who knows. :)

I'm studying Computer Aided Design at University, I aspire to go to work at a top Company and design for them. I would like to do a Masters too :)
-
Have a degree in design management- engineering, interior, architecture, graphic... don't really use it.
I'm considered a "Quality Associate" for an aesthetic device company and currently filling their document control position until its filled. Then I'll get ISO certified to do internal audits, process improvements...
Anyone snoring yet? Most people find my work very dry and boring I'm sure.
I work full time building what you inspect, I work for Safran/Labinal and making wiring harnesses for 8-11 hours a day, and then curse out inspectors under my breathe :) I also understand everything you just said, one of the people I talk to a lot is a Quality Control Associate and has a QAR stamd, he is also certified to inspect GD, etc. We are ISO 9001:somethingsomethingsomething certified, or so the banner in our break room says.
I also go to school full time, I'm in my sophmore year, working towards being a high school math teacher.

I didnt know what area I was going to be primarily working in for a while, so take your time to explore what areas you like. Though if you go theory chances are you can apply most of your skills to any area since programming is programming at the end of the day.

Well I'm not that into programming... We had a Java course last year and I barely made it, pretty much hated it. After Java we learned our way around in Maple and R and we've got a matlab course now but those are completely different of course.

The danger with a PhD is that it's over-specialised and you are automatically excluded from many jobs for being over-qualified. So you still might have to build skills either through staff development, on the job training if available or further diplomas etc.

Graduated with an associate's in radiation therapy, looking for work as a radiation therapist.

Just started my third week at my new job. My title is "Infrastructure Project Manager" which means that I run IT projects that deal with the company's data centers. I also help execute.
