for some reasons the songs don't really cut it for me , most of em just sounds like wank , eg:
notable ones:
learning to live
metropolis
beyond this life
fatal tragedy
and the rest sounds really mediocre
another day
surrounded
dejavu
through my eyes/my words
etc..
although there are some i really like,
glass moon
finally free
home
there arent really huge monsters that blow my pants away like most albums do
voices
tot
tgp
8vm
tmols
tcot
so call me weird , yes i do find my self weird for not enjoying DT's most praised albums , but what i want to know is, does anyone else feel the same way?
-
Yes, you are the only one.
-
Yes, you are the only one.
-
You're free to prefer the albums you want to. However, in my opinion I&W and SFAM are true Dream Theater creations all the way through. On all the other albums there are weak spots and not as likeable moments.
-
I wouldn't say I don't like them, but they're the least listened to in the catalogue for me, along with Octavarium.
-
I havent even *listened* to WDADU....
But SFAM and Octavarium are amongst my top albums.
Too hard to pick a favourite.
-
I honestly don't care much for I&W, but SFAM is a solid album.
-
I've never liked SFAM. I&W is much better. But Another Day and Surrounded are terrible
-
Well, I love Images And Words, and don't think that SFAM is particularly great. So I can only agree on half of it, sorry.

lolwut
Yes, you are the only one.
pretty much that ^ though everyone is entitled to their own opinion and all that .....
-
lolwut and yes are the appropriate responses here
-
probably not but you're in an epic minority
-
I agree about I&W, second to worst album (WDADU being the worst)
Scenes though is quite great!
-
Yes, you are the only one.
Just gonna go with this.
-
I don't think they are miles ahead of the other albums, and I think if people accuse DT of "wankery" these albums are actually two of the worst offenders, but I love both albums. I enjoy every DT album but these two would probably be in the top half at least.
-
On this board...hopefully.
I mean, SFAM isn't AMAZING but I&W definitely is.
-
Yes, you are the only one.
Just gonna go with this.
so am I
-
well at least i know that these two albums aren't really the most favoured among some, but imo the worst album is octavarium, it would be a step above WDADU if 8vm wasnt the only audible track in the whole album
-
Dude, are you sure you know what the definition of audible is?
-
He must have the original leaked copy that begins with 50 minutes of silence.
-
Yes, you are the only one.
-
I&W - I like it but not as much as most people. SFAM... well, it's an absolute masterpiece for me.
You're probably a rare case but I don't mind, it's more interesting if people have more varied opinions (and I hate bandwagon mentality personally).
-
Hmm. I'm pretty sure what you call 'wank' a lot of us call "awesome". One of the main attractions of DT is that they solo a lot. If you don't want to listen to that, listen to something with less "wank" :-X. I personally like SFAM more than Images and Words.
-
I certainly hope you are :P Scenes and I&W are two parts of Dream Theater's holy trinity of albums
-

well im sure the definition of wank varies form person to person. for me , its throwing in a bunch of random licks or riffs with no flow or pattern to it at all , the before mentioned songs are just a few examples
and im pretty sure the new album would sound the same by the preview of the snippets
-
If you don't like them, listen to them until it happens because you are missing something great
-
Dude, I feel a bit sorry for you, that you can't enjoy those albums :-[

You know if you people keep having shitty opinions were gonna forbid you to have them.

They are both in my top 10 albums ever... I&W is #1 :p
-
I&W is in my Top 5 of all time. Learning To Live, Surrounded and Another Day is in my Top 5 DT songs ever.
-
If you don't like them, listen to them until it happens because you are missing something great
don't fret, DT is ones of my favourite bands , apparently, it's just that i don't share the same taste as the majority of the DT fans , ill give you a little insight of djentlemen

You "don't like" I&W, but you've got it ranked 5th? So you only like, at most, 4 DT albums?

Learning to Live sounds like wank? :lol :lol :lol :lol
This. Seriously.
You say you were blown away by The Ministry of Lost Souls. And you complain about supposed wank in other songs. LOLWUT!?
-
Ministry of Lost Souls is so much the definition of wank, I start wanking every time I hear it just to try and distract myself from the horror of the wankery taking place. (Protip: it doesn't work because nothing can outwank TMoLS, so in the end you're better off just smashing your penis with a ball ping hammer in hopes of somehow escaping the mind numbing wankery that calls into question the very purpose of human existence in the galaxy).
Have I mentioned how much I hate tmols? Prefering it over even the silence BETWEEN the tracks on I&W or SFAM is just :-\ to me...
-
Images has some great parts, mainly the last 4 tracks, but pmu, ad, ttt and surrounded Im not as crazy about as some others. Scenes however, I love from start to finish, though I find it better to listen to as a complete album. So youre certainly not alone, though I would think the majority of fans would have at least one of those in thier top tier dt..
-
Though Scenes is my favourite album and I also love I&W, I get that many people prefer other albums (from DT or other bands). But to not like them at all? I'm not sure how that's possible...
Btw, it's really weird how you like Finally Free, because that is my favourite track from the CD. So that makes me wonders if you just have higher standards than me.
On second thought, that was heresy, I'm going to go listen to Scenes 5 times as repentance.
P.S. I'm one of those few people who actually quite likes The Ministry of Lost Souls. Sure, there's room for improvement and it is somewhat inconsistent, but I like the consistent parts so much as to overlook its flaws.
-
I'm not going to laugh at you because I've got a few unorthodox opinions (I think the song Octavarium is pretty lame), but what I don't get is how you rank Systematic Chaos at 3, and Octavarium at 10. They don't seem different enough to be that far apart in the rankings.
And please stop saying wank. It's annoying.
-

They're very different albums. Systematic Chaos is a pretty heavy metal focused album, with more of the shred and instrumental stuff, plus the fantasy lyrics. Octavarium is a diverse album with not a lot of focus on heaviness, aside from a couple of tracks, different lyrical themes, and generally a lot more concise song structures. I actually don't see a lot of comparison, except for some of the heavier sections.
-
IaW is their 4th best IMO
SFAM is their 7th or 8th
So, sorta
-
Are you the only one? No.
Are you the only Dream Theater fan that doesn't like those two albums? Yes (or pretty darn close to it)
-

Well, to me it's when the band started repeating themselves. I don't think Panic Attack and Sacrificed Sons would sound out of place on SC, or Prophets of War and The Ministry of Lost Souls on Octavarium. I'm not saying they're exactly the same or anything. It just seems weird that someone could think Octavarium is terrible but SC is one of DT's best albums.
-
I&W is 6th for me.
-
I hate to cause something here...but why is it when I made a thread a while back asking if anyone agrees that TDEN had awful lyrics, it was locked for calling it 'awful', yet this thread remains unlocked and he's called a few songs wank?
-

Some songs could fit alright, but I'd say at least half of each album sounds nothing like the other. They're definitely different enough overall for me to see no problem with liking one and disliking the other. Octavarium, TALW, IWBY, NE could definitely not be on SC, and I think Forsaken, TDEN, ITPOE could not possibly be on 8V. That's over half of each album right there (by time, not tracks obviously). For more of a metal fan, I can see someone loving SC but disliking Octavarium, and vice versa.
-

This. 2 out of the top 3 albums.

They're my two least favorite DT albums. When I first heard SC, I liked it a little more than Octavarium, but I didn't hear as much change as I was used to or wanted between DT albums. They both have a very Muse style song, a bunch of lyrics that bug the hell out of me, etc. That's just my opinion and you obviously don't agree, so let's get back to the thread topic:
DJENTLEMEN, Y U NO LIKE I&W AND SFAM
-
It's not that crazy, Images is my second favorite, but SFAM is probably my least favorite or second least favorite.
-
Um... Really?
This begs the question are you really a DT fan? I think I speak for a lot of people when I say that most of the songs you dislike, or don't listen to, are fucking DT classics.
So....
Yes, you are the only one.
-
I bet that your first DT album was probably ToT or any of the albums released since... If you commenced listening to DT's more "heavy" or "metal" stuff I guess that it will be long before you really enjoy SFAM and their previous albums.
-
You are demented.
-
You are demented.
And deserve to die. :tdwn
-
Yes, you are the only one.
-
You are demented.
And deserve to die. :tdwn
... What.
-
I don't really care that much for SFaM. I can think of a few songs that are really great (THE, Home, SDV (no, not Space Dye Vest), and some more I probably will think of later) but I really don't care for the rest, especially (especially!) BTL, althougb the LaB version was pretty good for some reason.
As for Images and Words, there isn't a single bad song on it. Surrounded doesn't get much love compared to the others but I think it's a mindblowing song on everyone's part, especially JLB and KM.
And yes, maybe I do have some odd tastes, like how I really love SC but hate BC&SL and Octavarium bores me to death besides Intervals and Razor's Edge, but I like being different. :millahhhh
-
You are demented.
And deserve to die. :tdwn
haha what
-
I find it rather funny that if someone has a strong opinion about something then "it just your opinion man" but if someone says something unpopular, there's something looking like a riot preparing that looks like trying to shout him to death. (And it doesn't seem playful or a joke even slightly)
-
You are demented.
And deserve to die. :tdwn
Too much?
-
I don't like IAW as much as I used to. I think other albums are better. But I've never hated SFAM.
-
You are demented.
And deserve to die. :tdwn
Too much?
Yes, IMHO.
-
I think it all depends on when/how you were first introduced to DT. My first experience was I&W and ACOS, which I still adore both. Didn't really care much for Awake, and FII was 50/50 to me. So when SFAM came out, it was a breath of fresh air. SFAM to this day is the best album I've ever heard. Period.
-
I don't go bat crazy about AD, TTT, Metropolis and UAGM as others do, but it is 5th in my rankings. SFAM is great too, but BTL the instrumental sections seems to run for too long, although it has amazing vocals. TDOE and SDV really get the least plays, I don't know guess I'm not really into them as much as I was.
-
I smell a troll. *takes deep breath*. Yup definitely a troll. Coupled with the display picture,
-

Yep. Say you put a less appreciated song from I&W in your top 5, or you say Octavarium is overrated, everyone's like "That's awesome, I love seeing different opinions!" Say you don't think Learning To Live is amazing, and it's another story. People love to see people giving different opinions about DT than expected - just as long as you stay within a certain narrow range and don't go against anything actually popular.
But yeah to the OP, if you've got I&W as your #5 then I don't see what's so against the norm. Although there are loads of people who think I&W is one of their best (I'm one as well), there are plenty who don't but still like it. Same with SFAM (it's definitely not in my top 3 or anything, it's about equivalent with BC&SL).
-

I started with the same 2 and still like ACOS but I never listen to I&W anymore. When SFAM came out DT started getting a little heavier which is more to my tastes. I still listen to SFAM like it but it isn't in my top 3.
-
You need a good psychoanalyst Victoria! :hat

My thoughts exactly.
-
That's like me Loving PoW. And not really loving TGP as much as most.
-
Everyone's different. I personally don't care for 8VM too much. TROAE is great, these walls is good and Panic Attack is great, but the rest of the album is pretty boring to me. As far as the 20 min+ songs go , 8VM is waaaay at the bottom of the list.
-
This thread makes me cringe. These two albums are DT's best imo.
Learning to Live sounds like wank? :lol :lol :lol :lol
This. Seriously.
You say you were blown away by The Ministry of Lost Souls. And you complain about supposed wank in other songs. LOLWUT!?
This too.
Also, what's wrong with Another Day and Surrounded? Someone earlier said they were "terrible" songs. How can you even say that? I understand you may not like them, but terrible...
-
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I think that in some cases, prejudice and close mindedness(I'm pretty sure everyone has both to some extent) affects some people's opinions in songs.
I once really disliked I&W, when I first heard Metropolis I thought to myself "WTF WAS UP WITH HIS VOICE?!" and I also found Another Day and Surrounded extremely cliché. After exploring more music outside of Images And Words, I listened to the album with a more open mind. I can now appreciate every single song.
I always liked SFAM.

I like half of Images and Words. Pull Me Under, Metropolis, Wait For Sleep and Learning To Live; these songs helped me get into Dream Theater in the first place. The other four songs, though? Never got into them. I understand people love them, but they've always bored me.
-
Bitch be trolling?
But seriously OP what the fuck is wrong with your brain/ear combo
;)
-
You're a terrible person and I hate you. From now on, you sit down when you pee.
-
Well, I love Images And Words, and don't think that SFAM is particularly great. So I can only agree on half of it, sorry.
You are my new bff ;D
@OP Just my very personal opinion, but I just don't connect as a listener to SFAM at all. Perhaps my least favorite DT album. (DTF guillotine, here I come)
-
I love I&W, though I prefer A, FII, and 6 over it.
I don't like Scenes at all, though, aside from Home, Dance of Eternity, and Fatal Tragedy.
-
I think IAW is way overrated even though it's definitely in DT's top 5. SFAM on the other hand, seems to be really underrated.
-
SFAM on the other hand, seems to be really underrated.
lolwut? It is consistently ranked in their top 2 or 3. How is that underrated?
-
I've never been a fan of Scenes From A Memory. Production just doesn't win me over.
-
I've come to a conclusion: I hate you all.
Joking aside, your DT album rankings are terrible. Therefore, I hate you all.
:sadpanda:
-
SFAM is probably number 5 in my album ranking
-
Put it this way. I and W is the best album ever made EVER by ANYONE EVER. :metal
-
These are the best 2 albums ever made. I hate your opinion. >:(
-
Well, I love Images And Words, and don't think that SFAM is particularly great. So I can only agree on half of it, sorry.
This...
-
Wow, butthurt fans everywhere.
-
Obviously you aren't. But I can't see why you put Systematic Chaos at #3, when the only songs I can listen to off that album are The Ministry of Lost Souls, Repentence and The Dark Eternal Night (and even then, the only one that has a frequent spin is TMoLS). Overall, I would rank them as such:
1.) Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
2.) Scenes from a Memory
3.) Images & Words
4.) When Dream and Day Unite
5.) Black Clouds and Silver Linings
6.) Awake (although, to be honest, I never gave it all that many listens)
7.) Octavarium
LARGE GAP
8.) Train of Thought
9.) Falling Into Infinity (same as Awake)
10.) Systematic Chaos
-
I rank them like this:
1.) 6
2.) Awake
3.) Falling Into Infinity
4.) Images And Words
5.) 8thalbum
(Gap of sorts)
6.) When D&D Unite
7.) Chaotic Systems
8.) Thinking Train
9.) BC&SL
10.) Metro 2: Electric Boogaloo
-
Yes, you are the only one.
I can't say anything else but this.
