Title: The Avant-garde/Experimental Metal Thread
Post by: Gorille85 on September 19, 2010, 07:15:26 PM
ITT we discuss bands and artists of this awesome genre. I personnally am always searching for new bands like that and I'm probably not alone! :P

As most people here probably knows: Unexpect is my favorite band of all-time. Ulver is also pretty popular around here!

Here is a rough list of some experimental bands other than those two:

Mr. Bungle
Stolen Babies
Pin-Up Went Down
Diablo Swing Orchestra
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum

GO! :)

Experimental metal in its broadest terms is probably my favorite type of music overall.

Other good bands besides the ones mentioned:

maudlin of the Well
Kayo Dot (only their first album fits here, but its the greatest thing ever)
Fantomas
Ved Buens Ende
Tomahawk
Grayceon

I think the guy behind maudlin and Kayo also did a pretty good solo album amirite?

Yeah! That's what I had in mind! I remember getting very interested by reading your review but I could'nt find any previews of it in the interwebs so I eventually forgot about it. :blush

But yeah I have to check that out, all three of his projects.

And while I'm on-topic  -->  I'm gonna see Unexpect live three times over the coming month! :metal

Here's a list of bands I've found avant-garde in the last month to two months:
Burst, get their 2008 album Lazarus Bird

Candiria, get their albums from 1997 & 1999

Ephel Duath, get The Painter's Palette (has lots of saxophone, people describe this album as "jazz metal" lol, though Pain Necessary To Know focuses on more jazz guitar and random staccato riff breaks in many sections which I found irritating but it was still a cool find regardless)

Fredrik Thordendal, his only album called Sol Niger Within deals with lots of metal riffage at groove tempos and his signature Holdsworth influenced jazz fusion solos and also becomes experimental. For the guys that love epic length albums on a single track.

Ihsahn, everybody has After by now right.

(forgot a strong recommendation! if you were to check out something from this list, pick this first) Yakuza, I really enjoyed Transmutations
---
That's it for now.

Arcturus is also great. La Masquerade Infernale is an excellent record!

And Tactile Gemma is consider avant-garde but they're hardly metal at all...

EDIT:
Yeah, it's fucking awesome. Really, REALLY out there, but awesome nonetheless.

I feel like an asshole for not mentioning Buckethead in my list. I mean, he does a lot of straight forward stuff, but he's mostly Avant-garde and experimental. Hell, he's the reason I delved deeper into the genre and found Unexpect.

So what about an all-star Avant-garde line-up?? :)

I'll try:
Vocals: Mike Patton (Mr. Bungle, Faith No More, etc.)
Guitar: Buckethead (solo) :P
Bass: ChaotH (Unexpect)
Keys/Stuff: Garm (Ulver)
Drums: Tomas Haake (Meshuggah)

Holy cow! :omg:

Polkadot Cadaver
I'm really getting into these guys! I was listening to Chloroform Girl by them and then I read the lyrics. :|

SHIT.  :omg: How did I forget him? The man's a genius, plain and simple.

Honestly, if you want his most avant-garde stuff from that list, I'd say go with Inbred Mountain. If you want a more straightforward album, go with Albino Slug. If you want something completely out of this world and weird, go with Bucketheadland 2, and if you want a cool album with some forgettable tracks (but with many amazing ones), go with Monsters and Robots.

Kayo Dot
maudlin of the Well
Unexpect
Diablo Swing Orchestra (thanks Lat)
Buckethead

Unexpect are going independent!

Quote
October 5, 2010

2010 has been quite scarce in terms of words isn't it ?.
...so much to say though !
Let us fill those empty spaces with some radioactive thoughts.

On the stage side : For those who are not yet aware of it, we'll start an Eastern Canadian Tour in  less than 1 week ! At our sides will play the bands STREAM OF PASSION from Netherlands and MANAHIL from Montreal.

The following band will also be part of the musical rumble :

Metric Madness @ Rimouski
Instanzia @ Saint-Hyacinthe
Elliptic @ Quebec City
Inner Control @ Jonquière
Despised Icon, Misery Index & more @ Rouyn-Noranda
Unveil et Smelly Pedros @ Sherbrooke
Half Past Four @ Toronto
Transe Metal Machine @ Montreal
Necronomicon, Insides Out & Signs of Chaos @ Ottawa ( without Manahil & Stream of Passion)

To celebrate this pre-pumpkins tour, we'll not stop at one crime...we'll indeed play 2 new songs for the curious minds !

Since we never mentioned the following tidbit in this newsletter here it is : We now have an official Facebook page... A lot of you are already participating...we love tho read you so keep it up !
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Unexpect/238413107024

Speaking of novelties...
After some deep and profound thinking, we finally decided to take back the reins of our destiny and go Independent for the release of the next album !
We gave this option a lot of attention/thinking time and the conclusion was that we think it's all positive and for the best !
And the fact of removing intermediaries will let us be even closer to our public!

The album has been completed for a while and we're currently working on some re-adjustments so that we can release it as soon as we have the ideal conditions. More details to come about a release date. Thanks for your patience...it'll be worth it we assure you !

Now...probably a lot of you already heard about Exod's departure from the band a few months ago. Some say that he's traveled in time, exploded, and thus would be at the origin of the Big Bang.
But that is one wacky theory...some people are crazy I tell ya !
The lifestyle and sacrifices that goes with touring is not to everyone's taste and it's been the main reason behind his choice ( this...and the fact that peanut butter is definitely too hard to find in Europe).
We were already talking about all of this while touring North America in 2008 so it's been a well thought decision that we all knew of for a long time.
That said, it doesn't mean that there won't be more future collaborations with him as we're still very good friends and are, as always, totally musically compatible...as you'll be able to hear on the new album ;)

For the shows, Exod, our favourite cyborg, prepared an electronic alter ego (read : a sequence ) which reproduce exactly the same sonorities as when he was physically with us. It feels like playing with an invisible Exod.
We're not currently searching for a replacement but we stay open to diverse possibilities !

Talk soon !

PS: Should I start an official Unexpect Thread? I wanted to start one (that is not a necrothread) but I fear we're just a few fans of the band here. Should I start one anyway? Or should I bump the old one?

Hmm, I don't know. I've never heard of something like "avant-garde rock". The whole thing with avant-garde is to mix up genres so of course they're not really metal. They are enough metal to be categorized as AGM though, IMO.

My first thought upon seeing this thread was Harmony Bay

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJOInbAdaKY (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJOInbAdaKY)

Awkward rhythms everywhere. Completely batshit insane, it's awesome.

I've found a lot of great bands lately through Last.FM. I've actually found Harmony Bay radio and Zvoyn radio to be two of my favorites. A few selected bands for anyone interested

Also, I recommend Stolen Babies. Pretty awesome band with elements of dark cabaret and a pretty good female singer.

That really made me think of The World/Inferno Friendship Society. They refer to themselves as cabaret punk/circus punk. They come out sounding fairly avant garde. They remind me of DSO, but they're not quite that. Classic instruments with some punkish sound female vocals sounding really fun and out there.

If you go to these shows, you will have seen Sleepytime Gorilla Museum for the last time. As it turns out, we are being replaced.

It has been an honor to make our music with you, both in the room and not. Though these are our final performances, we are still in the process of finishing a new record, a short film called 'The Last Human Being', and a compendium live DVD that's been gathering source material for the past six years.

You will be invited to take part in both the final shows, and the shooting of the final scene of our film in early August. Please stay tuned.

Ambugaton.

Indeed. :sadpanda: However, the "we are being replaced" statement really confuses me.

Yeah, I was just thinking about that. I think it is just a way of saying that there will be other bands and music to take their place since they are leaving the scene.

HOLY FUCK I GOT TO MEET TOBY DRIVER AND HE WAS AWESOME

It was incredible. They played all of Coyote except Cartogram Out of Phase, followed by Blue Lambency Downward, The Antique, and On Limpid Form. I would have liked to see another song from Choirs or maybe Aura on an Asylum Wall, but they were still amazing. The Antique and On Limpid Form were absolutely devastating.

Seriously, he's an awesome guy. Really down to earth, really nice. I asked him about the possibility of a second solo album, and he said it's something he'd love to do, it's just a matter of money. I recommended that he try kickstarter for it, especially since that worked with Tartar Lamb II and (essentially the same thing) Part the Second. He said he'd look into it :caffeine:

Stolen Babies is one of my favorite bands now, nice pop sensibilities mixed with that weird, avant-garde edge. I love it.

Diablo Swing Orchestra is similar in that regard. You may want to give them a try if you haven't already.

Anyone heard of The Amazing BrandO? He used to be part of the nerdcore hiphop duo Duane and BrandO. But they split, and now he's making (from what I can tell) crazy avant-garde. My friend sent me the song Endless Relentless the other day. Fucking spectacular and balls out crazy.

Just got an update from Polkadot Cadaver:

"Hey everybody!

Just a quick update to bring everyone up to speed.

* We will be announcing the "All of My Friends are Dead" tour hopefully on Thursday.  Dates are still coming in but it is to the point now that we really just need to roll with it.  Once this happens I will get the promo materials out to the right people in the right markets!

* Our myspace page has been completely re-done.  It now is a little more presentable for you to steer people towards to listen to the new song "Cake and Eat it Too".

* Pre-Order is going alright, we have 290 confirmed sales so far, but this is not nearly enough.  Our goal was to do 1000+ so we really need to step it up!  If you haven't ordered yet, please do so.  THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT!!!  Go to MERCHNOW.COM and order.

*We have a TOP-SECRET guest vocalist coming to the studio tonight to do a track for the NEXT PDot album....  Stay tuned!

Keep the faith Bon Jovi style.
jasan"

Swedish avantgarde metallers Diablo Swing Orchestra have set Pandora's Piñata as the title for its third album, set to be released in the first quarter of 2012.

In a short update on Facebook, the band says: "Ladies and gents, we just finished our last rehearsal before the recordings will begin and we finally agreed on a title: Pandora's Piñata. Album will be released in the first quarter of 2012 so be patient and stay tuned for sneak peaks of what to come!"

Only read the bottom part, like a moron.

I'm officially okay with this. Play a show in Cleveland and play 1997 at it, please and thank you.

Get Leaving Your Body Map if you don't have it already.

Both of Unexpect's albums are excellent.

Grand Opening and Closing by Sleepytime Gorilla Museum.

There Be Squabbles Ahead by Stolen Babies.

Listen to Róka Hasa Rádió by Thy Catafalque.

They aren't talked about here much, but this album is very good and worth a listen, as long as you don't mind listening to lyrics all in Hungarian.

If you don't mind some black metal being thrown into the mix, anything by Sigh. Lots of exciting ideas and experimentations while still remaining surprisingly accessible.

Of Natural History is easily the best Sleepytime album.

Both of Unexpect's albums are excellent.
There are three Unexpect albums and an EP, noob.

Also, another band I've been majorly into lately is Akphaezya. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDKaSJd3rMs) They've got two albums out, one of which just came out a couple months ago. These guys kick all sorts of ass.

Dir En Grey is probably my favorite Avant-Garde Metal band. Uroboros and Dum Spiro Spero.  :heart :heart

With that said, the genre has lots of good stuff. Kayo Dot, Maudlin of the Well and so on.

Sigh is quite easily the best avant-garde metal band around. They have 9 albums and an EP, all of which are awesome. The best starting point is Imaginary Sonicscape, followed by In Somniphobia.

Just started listening to some stuff from this genre (PC and DSO), though you can find very little of it on Youtube, due to copyright restrictions in Germany. They're both pretty awesome.  :metal

God damn. I think I'm on a serious binge with this band. I've been watching live videos of them all day. It's impressive to me that they're able to recreate their sound so well live without any backing tracks. Hell, they don't even wear in-ear monitors.

When is that new album supposed to surface?

I've really been listening loads to Dog Fashion Disco and Polkadot Cadaver lately. Adultery and Sex Offender has been blowing my mind, and I'm already obsessed about getting money so that I can get Adultery on vinyl, a mission I must complete.  :hat

I've heard good things about Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, should probably check them out.

Grand Opening and Closing, post-haste. If that one's too weird, try out In Glorious Times instead. It's still weird, but in a more controlled way.

Yes, Adultery is an extremely awesome album. The other major label releases, Committed to a Bright Future and Anarchists of Good Taste are great as well.

Anarchists of Good Taste is their best album, if you ask me.

Cartoon Autopsy pretty much crushes every song from Adultery. But you know, to each his own.

To continue with the DFD discussion, I recently found Committed to a Bright Future on Spotify, and while the first few listens were very good, none of the songs stuck with me as easily as Private Eye, Moonlight City Drive, The Darkest Days, Desert Grave or The Hitchhiker did. Still, will definitly continue listening.

Also, the chorus of The Hitchhiker has to be one of the best choruses ever written. It's so damn catchy, morbid and awesome all around.

MIDNIGHT STRANGER COME ON TAKE A RIDE WITH ME
IN ALL MY MISERY I WOULD LOVE SOME COMPANY

Yeah Sweet Nothings is a great album. Nice comeback and more than anything I'm just glad Todd's maybe going to settle down and just release stuff with DFD instead of the million other hodgepodge projects he's been involved with. I love Polkadot Cadaver and everything but honestly it's just DFD with a bit more electronics.
Title: Re: The Avant-garde/Experimental Metal Thread
Post by: Scorpion on August 25, 2014, 02:54:38 PM
If I had to choose between DFD and PC, I'd go with DFD any day of the week. Yeah, I like the electronic elements of PC, but IMHO they're not worth sacrificing the gorgeous woodwinds and the like that DFD employ instead.

Also, Greta might just be my favourite DFD "ballad".

EDIT: Holy shit End of the Road just exploded my brain via concentrated awesomeness.
