The Avant-garde/Experimental Metal Thread
« on: September 19, 2010, 07:15:26 PM »
ITT we discuss bands and artists of this awesome genre. I personnally am always searching for new bands like that and I'm probably not alone! :P

As most people here probably knows: Unexpect is my favorite band of all-time. Ulver is also pretty popular around here!

Here is a rough list of some experimental bands other than those two:

Mr. Bungle
Stolen Babies
Pin-Up Went Down
Diablo Swing Orchestra
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum

GO! :)

Experimental metal in its broadest terms is probably my favorite type of music overall.

Other good bands besides the ones mentioned:

maudlin of the Well
Kayo Dot (only their first album fits here, but its the greatest thing ever)
Fantomas
Ved Buens Ende
Tomahawk
Grayceon

Yeah! That's what I had in mind! I remember getting very interested by reading your review but I could'nt find any previews of it in the interwebs so I eventually forgot about it. :blush

But yeah I have to check that out, all three of his projects.

And while I'm on-topic  -->  I'm gonna see Unexpect live three times over the coming month! :metal

Irony is a Dead scene, the most avant garde metal album I've heard.

The Butcher's Ballroom :metal

I love Diablo Swing Orchestra. I don't have their second album though. How's it?

Superb. One of my favourite 2009 releases. Get it!  :metal

Here's a list of bands I've found avant-garde in the last month to two months:
Burst, get their 2008 album Lazarus Bird

Candiria, get their albums from 1997 & 1999

Ephel Duath, get The Painter's Palette (has lots of saxophone, people describe this album as "jazz metal" lol, though Pain Necessary To Know focuses on more jazz guitar and random staccato riff breaks in many sections which I found irritating but it was still a cool find regardless)

Fredrik Thordendal, his only album called Sol Niger Within deals with lots of metal riffage at groove tempos and his signature Holdsworth influenced jazz fusion solos and also becomes experimental. For the guys that love epic length albums on a single track.

Ihsahn, everybody has After by now right.

(forgot a strong recommendation! if you were to check out something from this list, pick this first) Yakuza, I really enjoyed Transmutations

That's it for now.

Arcturus is also great. La Masquerade Infernale is an excellent record!

And Tactile Gemma is consider avant-garde but they're hardly metal at all...

Gorguts tends to be lumped into the "Experimental Metal" groups, so I figured I'd bring them up. Obscura is a masterpiece, both compositionally and technically!  :metal

I did. The song is really awesome and I can't believe it, uh...didn't rip properly. The nerve of some people. That looping at the end is ridiculous though.  :lol

Arcturus, Kayo Dot, maudlin of the Well, and Ephel Duath have already been mentioned.

I'll add Age of Silence, Frantic Bleep, In The Woods..., Peccatum, and Solefald to the list.

I feel like an asshole for not mentioning Buckethead in my list. I mean, he does a lot of straight forward stuff, but he's mostly Avant-garde and experimental. Hell, he's the reason I delved deeper into the genre and found Unexpect.

So what about an all-star Avant-garde line-up?? :)

I'll try:
Vocals: Mike Patton (Mr. Bungle, Faith No More, etc.)
Guitar: Buckethead (solo) :P
Bass: ChaotH (Unexpect)
Keys/Stuff: Garm (Ulver)
Drums: Tomas Haake (Meshuggah)

Holy cow! :omg:

Polkadot Cadaver
I'm really getting into these guys! I was listening to Chloroform Girl by them and then I read the lyrics. :|
