Title: The Tea Party thread
Post by: wolfking on June 04, 2010, 06:03:05 AM
Any fans here of this amazing Canadian trio?

They were only really huge here in Australia and in Canada, I think they didn't break that much in USA or Europe.  Amazing alternate rock/blues/some prog/middle eastern/electronic band, they did everything.  Unfortunately they have split up now, Jeff Martin's head got too big and decided to go solo.  Unfortunately everything he has done since pales in comparison to the Tea Party's discography.  A truly unique, mesmerizing band that I absolutely love.  All their albums are magic.  Here's a few links to some of the best songs IMO.

Oh, and before anyone says anything, yes Jeff Martin looks and sounds like Jim Morrison.

Great band.  I discovered them right before they broke up.  Interzone Mantras and Seven Circles are my favorites of theirs.

But Jeff Martin has a new band called The Armada which is pretty much the same sound.  Good album too, kinda bluesy.  Check it out if you haven't already.

Absolutely killer band. Been a fan since 2000. Never got an opportunity to see them live, but I own the entire catalog.

Sweet.  I was contemplating making an appreciation thread for this band ever since Samsara mentioned them in the Nevermore thread.  Love The Tea Party.  I heard them around 1998 with Transmission.  I don't own their latter 2 cds, which I need to rectify.  You're right in saying that their style covers a lot of ground: rock, hard rock, alternative, prog, blues, world music, electronic, etc.  Plus, Jeff Martin is truly an amazing vocalist.  If anyone out there got the T.V. channel Much Music in the late 90's/early 2000's, The Tea Party were featured quite prominently at that time on the network.

And I had forgotten that they actually have a song called "Samsara."  :lol

Yeah, the Armada was a nice surprise.  Not near the Tea Party league, but a lot of nice songs.  Much better than Exile and the Kingdom.  :(

Listened to 2 of the songs in the OP (one was a broken link), and also a song called Stargazer.

There is something about the music that really strikes well with me. Want more.

THEN GET MORE!!!

I remember being a freshmen in college in 98 -- "Dawson's Creek" was just getting really popular, and The Tea Party had a song ("Transmission" I think) on one of the episodes.  I think that was the most prominence they ever had in the U.S.  :lol

I still need to pick up their debut and their last 2 albums, but I love the stuff I have by them.

I have added a live version of Fire in the Head for you.  They are an amazing trio, with every record quite different in style and atmosphere, but really all their albums are recommended.

Get Edges of Twilight, Transmission and Seven Cicles first, then get the rest.  Extraordinary band.

They were amazing. I was fortunate to see them perform in a fairly intimate setting around the Seven Circles timeframe. They played every one of my favorites (The Messenger, Psychopomp, Temptation, Transmission, Lullaby, Cathartik, Paint it Black, Heaven Coming Down) I was in heaven!

Thanks Soundscape, I didn't realise they were releasing a new album, this has me excited.  It's so great to see this band releasing more material.  I always thought they quit too early.  This tune is classic later Tea Party, very nice.  I hope there's some heavier stuff on there too though.

Loved this band since "The Edges of Twilight" came out - it got a certain amount of promotion here in the UK, but never really amounted to anything. it's still their best album, but their entire catalogue is pretty good, and they should be one of the biggest bands on the planet (instead of Coldplay).
Also check out their "Live from Australia" album - superb.

I was a little disappointed with the performances on that live album, although it's still good to hear them back.  Jeff Martin's solo stuff has been good, but never quite the quality of Tea Party.

Tea Party I believe were only really big in Canada and Australia.  Those are their two biggest fan bases anyway.  It's funny though, I have never heard a Tea Party song on the radio here and I have only met one other fan of the band, yet the following out here is crazy.

Top 5.......maybe top 3 Tea Party song.  That is by far one of their most underrrated and is something special, I love it.  The atmosphere and vibe on that song is just incredible.

Just purchased and listened to the new Tea Party album The Ocean at the End. It's stunning! This is the album they should have made after The Interzone Mantras. I hate to use the cliche "a stunning return to form", but that's exactly what it is. Could very well be my fave album of 2014...

I became a big fan of The Tea Party in college in the late 1990s.  Still haven't picked up the new one.  They kinda lost my interest for some reason with the last release prior to their hiatus.  Anyone else pick up the new album and have thoughts on it?  Just curious if it's worth getting.  So far we have one person who like it, and one who didn't.

The Canadian Metal thread made me want to resurrect this thread.   I'm just glad that the thread (along with their recent tour) has caused me to dig their stuff out.

I really liked Splendor Solis and I ***LOVE*** The Edges of Twilight (easily in the top 5 albums from that entire decade...just a smokin album from start to finish)...but then Transmission lost me a bit, and I lost track of them after that.

Hard core fans praise every note they play, and a part of me thinks I may have dismissed the experimentation of Transmission a bit too quickly.   Now they're coming to Seattle in December, and I might possibly get the opportunity to interview Jeff Martin for a local blog.    So it's time to do some catch up.

Any suggestions??

Transmission is quite brilliant IMO, and often misunderstood.  I never really got the love for Triptych and it's probably my least fav album from them besides the new one.  Interzone was really good and worthy of listening.  Seven Circle is also a fav of mine as the mainstream direction works really well.

I'm going to be searching through their stuff.   There's really something about them that I admire.  I've never heard their unique blend of influences anywhere else, and I like how they had the guts to take their sound in a different direction right when they probably could have copied their own success and cashed in.

As successful as Jimmy Page was at blending Eastern music with traditional blues, I rarely heard anyone trying to pull it off.   Don't get me wrong, I heard a TON of LZ clones, but they were mostly imitating JP's bluesy hooks and RP's soaring vocals.   A few, but not too many tried to make a success of the middle eastern sounds that Page did....but no one off the top of my head as blatantly as The Tea Party did.   But by then infusing those two things with the (then) modern "groove metal" trends of the time, they stumbled onto something that was IMO totally original.

I'm a huge The Tea Party fan.   One of my top 10 favorite bands ever, EASILY.

Like JamminDude, I recently listened to Transmission for the first time in years.   I've always been spinning their other records fairly often, but my copy of Transmission was scratched to Hell. I bought a new copy and man o man was that listening session overdue. It's either that or The Edges of Twilight as #1 for me.

I've been kind of mentally preparing myself for the new record. I think I'm ready. hahaha.  When the news came out that they were reuniting with the intent of possibly putting out an album, I ordered up a bunch of Jeff Martin solo stuff that had gone under my radar. I think it's all top notch. I don't have the Armada album yet though. Very interested.

I became a fan right between the release of TRIPtych and Tangents. I was young. 13 going on 14 years old. They have definitely made great music to grow up with. The songs age so damn well. Lots of songs make way more sense to me now in my mid-twenties (lyrically and musically).     They have LOTS of deep cuts that don't get played live so much (or don't get too much attention otherwise) that are incredible... Chimera, Aftermath, Dreams Of Reason, Walk With Me, Empty Glass, Must Must... That's one from each album except the new one.

I've never seen them live. They don't come down to The South, ya know: New York City & New Jersey.  Maybe that will change one day.

jammindude,
If you weren't already planning-to, definitely ask Jeff about touring more of America. Do they have any plans in 2015? Also ask about why a lot of Canadian artists aren't able to per the cost of Work Visas (Vancouver's Bend Sinister never toured the States for many years due to the cost of  Work Visas, but finally are). Also maybe if The Tea Party would be playing at SXSW or another festival in the States next year.

I'd love to ask him (and about a hundred other bands) something like this: "What are your thoughts on diving deeper into the Tea Party catalog, and playing some songs that haven't ever been concert staples? So many of your fans are absolutely crazy about the music and would love to hear some songs from the first 6 albums that never got much play."

They did dig really deep into The Edges Of Twilight album with their Reformation Tour Blu-Ray  which was totally cool.  Maybe ask if they'll be doing that with other albums in the future (all the while playing lots of the newest songs I'm sure).

I guess we're kind of spoiled with Dream Theater.  They play every freakin' one of their songs if you give them a few years.

Maybe ask him if he's kept all the instruments he has used in recordings, and if he'd like to really re-inject some of that Mid-Eastern flavor into future compositions.

I'd also want to ask him "I've read in another interview that you like to record to analog tape. Which Tea Party albums, if any, were recorded that way?"   something to that effect.

Hope your interview goes really well. He seems pretty nice and chilll in interviews with him that I've seen or read.

Title: Re: The Tea Party thread
Post by: mrrct on June 04, 2015, 09:58:52 AM
Once again I save a thread from its pending banishment to the archives section.

I was a really big fan of this band in the late nineties and early 2000s.  I have just about everything they ever released, save for their really low-volume EPs and the like.  I even have their video collection that came out at the same time as their greatest hits album, Tangents.  I used to watch Much Music a lot when I was in college, instead of MTV and VH1, and grew to like several Canadian acts that didn't do much in the U.S.

I had moved out of range of my favorite radio station, so I was not really keeping up with music at the time, when my friend gave me a dubbed cassette of The Edges of Twilight.  He had bought the disc after hearing Fire in the Head on the radio, and thought that I would like them.  Needless to say, he was right.  I had never heard a blend of hard rock and world music like theirs before, and it opened up my eyes to different genres.  Previously, I had mostly listened to hair metal (which is really pop disguised as rock/metal) and from there moved on to progressive metal (DT is the only other band that made such a similar first impression on me, only more so), with a little thrash and classic rock thrown in.

Over the years, I continued to follow The Tea Party's career, buying all of their albums, some of them online because they had no proper American release.  Although none of them were as good as The Edges of Twilight, I liked all of them.  I was even lucky enough to see them in March of 1998 at The Paradise in Boston.  For a venue of about 900 people, there might have been a dozen people there, which was truly disheartening for me, let alone them.  I don't believe they ever toured the U.S. again, playing only a few one-offs in places like Buffalo, Detroit, and Seattle.

When they broke up in 2004, I wasn't torn up that much, because their albums I felt were slightly diminishing in quality with each successive release, and it was getting to be a pain in the ass to purchase them.  I had to go online to get Seven Circles, and while I did surprisingly find Jeff Martin's Exile in the Kingdom at Newbury (probably the only copy shipped to New England), even that was only decent, maybe comparable to a poor man's Splendor Solis.  I heard Jeff Martin's next band, The Armada, on Martin's website, but it didn't grab me enough to purchase the album.

My friend alerted me around 2010 that they were reuniting and going to tour Australia and maybe record another album, but I didn't really care.  A year or two later, he burned me a copy of Live From Australia, which I found to be good but not great.  Then, last fall, I heard The Water's on Fire online and, while I dismissed it as the mandatory sell-out ballad to get radio airplay (in Canada and Australia, anyway), it sparked my interest enough to buy it when it came out on iTunes.  I found it to be good but not great, which is my same opinion of everything they've released since Triptych.  Still, I hope they have enough success to keep going and putting out more music, because I've never heard any other band like them before and I still find them to be a great change of pace to what I normally listen to.

Yeah, I wasn't fan of the last one at all.  The live album wasn't the best performance either.  I hope they keep going but agree that their stuff did decline in quality as time went on.

I did always comended their variety though and I'd probably say Seven Circles was a small step up, for me at least.  I think I just liked what they did there, but putting it next to Twilight is quite scary.

i've been a pretty big Tea Party fan since the '90s. i find their bizarre style changes have often lined up with what was popular at the time: they were playing The Doors-style psychedelic rock at the beginning, much the way The Smashing Pumpkins got noticed (and then honed more of a Zeppelin style for TEOT); by the time 1997 rolled around, it was the heyday of Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson, which is also when TTP did more of an industrial rock approach for Transmission; they adopted more of a U2 stadium rock approach for TRIPtych in 1999; and then sorta reverted to the old style in combination with the mainstream approach left intact from the U2 phase and also some I Mother Earth influence on The Interzone Mantras (which is also quite proto-Mars Volta in places, i might add). i have no idea if the band has ever denied this or acknowledged it.

they've kept consistencies across all the changes, though, so it's hard to call it a "sellout" rather than following the times!

I didn't really like the new single, nor did I like the last record.

That said, they are playing by me next year (they don't do much U.S. touring), so I dropped the $22.06 for a ticket. They put on a great show from what I hear, so it'll be cool to see them. Hoping for a bunch of stuff from Triptych and Seven Circles.

I can't even really tell you anything about it.  When they do the Zep thing, it just sounds like a waste, and a band with such a unique sound doing Zep style rip offs like this new song just leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.

I still find The Ocean at the End quite good and one of the better records this decade.

Water's on Fire is among their best songs.

Saw a show on netflix called Bad Blood about the mafia in Montreal.  Great show. Good song plays so I look up the band. The song was called The River by The Tea Party. I order the album and listen to it and find out I like it. Looking forward to hearing more.

The show also featured the music of another Canadian band called The Sheepdogs. They're kinda folky/blues/rock. Been listening to them for a while.

Been a HUGE fan from pretty much the beginning (The River was my Jam in the early '90s).

Like a lot of you, I found myself let down a bit by Seven Circles, which I suppose softened the blow of their hiatus. It was weird to see what appeared to be a really tight-knit group of musicians suddenly on the outs with each other.

I enjoyed the Jeff Martin solo albums but LOVED The Armada project. I was very disappointed there wasn't a second release. That is until The Tea Party reformed and released The Ocean At The End.

It was an amazing record that felt like a mix between Transmission, Triptych, and Interzone Mantras (which happen to be my favorite records).

As far as the new track. I dig it. Sounds cool. Can't wait to hear more!

The Armada album was indeed pretty good.  I for one really liked the straightforward approach of Seven Circles.  The title track is one of their best songs IMO.

Great show. Only about 100 people there, but it was a blast. I was dead center up front, and it was musical heaven for 100 minutes. You forget sometimes just how incredible it is for some of these progressive musicians to pull off everything they do so flawlessly. They played a couple from TRIPtych, which I appreciated, and then most of the stuff people knew (Transmission, etc.). Highly entertaining and just a great performance. They wrapped up the tour the next night in So Cal. I think they have a month off, and then are doing another leg. Europe, I think. Check em out if you have a chance. Well worth it.

I wish I could, but they never come close to my hometown of Minneapols/St.Paul (maybe Winnipeg?), and I can't justify traveling for concerts right now with a tight budget; I just bought a town house, etc.

but cool you finally got to see them after so long. I know how that is.

TAC - they may not be your thing.   But if you're curious, this (IMO) is their finest moment.   There's a long intro (the main riff doesn't kick in until about 2:15), so hang for a bit and give it a chance.

You'll quickly see why they were nicknamed "Moroccan-Roll"

Tim would HATE The Tea Party.

If you want to sample, Tim -- the two songs that hooked me were "Heaven Coming Down" and "Temptation." Proceed at your own risk.

I really love the Edges of Twilight album.  I remember my freshman year college roommate playing it in like 1996 and I was instantly hooked.  I also love their subsequent album Transmission almost just as much.  I didn't like any of their stuff as much as those two albums, and I haven't purchased their last album from 2014.  But damn, the Edges of Twilight and Transmission are fucking great!

new album "Blood Moon Rising" November 26th.

unsure what they mean by "European Exclusive"..only physical copies are being printed in Europe?

Also a bit down for the fact a percentage of it was released on the last EP.

That has to be it, keeping anything in the modern digital age exclusive to one regional area is a virtual impossibility.  I didn't realize they had new material coming though, so I'm stoked for that.  I always seem to get in the mood for them in the fall, so I had actually already listened to pretty much their whole discography over the last month or so, and it still holds up really well.

surprised I missed this, but back in October, they announced the release of a remaster of the Selt-Titled debut record on Vinyl and other formats

https://www.udiscovermusic.com/news/the-tea-party-self-titled-deluxe-edition/

"Save Me" sounds really good

I would proceed with caution if using AMAZON though per some accounts on 1 of the Facebook fan groups I'm in showed many people having their Preorders cancelled due to lack of product from Amazon. Likely due to a Vinyl shortage right now.

But I don't even own a copy on CD which I would go for.

Oh, I bought Blood Moon Rising over here in the UK and was a little surprised there weren't more people talking about it on the internet, as it's a brilliant album from a brilliant band. Now I know it's a Europe-only thing, I see why. Quite why these guys aren't huge is beyond me.

It's funny, I saw them on the Black River tour, and it was great. Totally missed Blood Moon Rising's release.

I have the Black River EP, and it was okay. I'll check out the other songs and see if BMR is worth getting. Glad to hear they are working on a more career-enveloping new album.

Loooooooonnnnngggg time Tea Party fan here, and I too am happy that a proper full-length is in the works.

The Ocean at the End was a welcome surprise for me as a fan, but the last decade has essentially consisted of 2 E.P.s and a couple of singles, none of which really grabs me. I suspect the trans-continental status of the members is likely to blame for output that essentially feels like a 'mixed-bag.'

While we are on the topic, for anyone who hasn't checked it out, I highly recommend Jeff Martin's 'The Armada' project. It came out shortly after his solo records (which are also worth checking out), and it is very much in the vein of the first two Tea Party albums.

I caught a show on The Tea Party & I Mother Earth tour last night, since they were playing at a casino only a 10 minute drive away. It’s rare that I can ever see a show that close to home.

I had only seen each band once before, and that was decades ago, so I figured this would be worth checking out.

I found I Mother Earth to be quite mesmerizing, and it was great to see Edwin back fronting the band again. They have such a high level of musicianship, and at times they had three percussionists on stage.

The Tea Party were pretty damn rocking and Jeff Martin’s voice sounded great. Sister Awake was killer, and sounded so heavy. My only complaint is that they included four cover songs (or portions of those songs), which seemed a bit much when the set length was only 75 minutes. Admittedly, they were great renditions, and they did manage to make the songs their own.

I would have loved to have seen that tour, but the closest was Winnipeg for me which was like a 7 hour drive. But the wife wouldn't have allowed it.

I have resounded to the fact I may never see either of those bands live given they never have found it worth applying-for and getting Work Visas in the US again. Sucks

So,  I listened to Sister Awake and was like, "Hmm, decent cover of a Robert Plant tune, but I don't see what the fancy is".   Then a version with Jeff and the Toronto Tabla Ensemble live in Sydney came up and it was pretty cool.

I might dig deeper.

If you dig Plant's last 20 years, you will LOVE the Tea Party...

Could not recommend Edges of Twilight more.

That said, the trio of Transmission, Triptych, and Interzone Mantras is a pretty unassailable peak in my humble opinion.

also Splendor Solis for the heavy Zeppelin-influence.

And I personally love The Ocean at the End. I consider a great "comeback" album of sorts.

Dude, nailed it.  Edges is an absolute classic and Transmission was my first so holds a special place for me.  Interzone is highly underappreciated too.  Seven Circles has a great modern feel to it too, always liked that one.
