Which DT Side Project Albums Do You Own?
« on: September 14, 2010, 12:56:17 PM »

Interesting.  Looking at which single member dominates my "side project" collection, it's Mike.  For you, it's Derek.

Derek has done a LOT since he left DT. If you haven't listened to any of it I recommend you do. It's sort of a Jazz/Metal/Progressive fusion mix that's outstanding

And Allan Holdsworth guests on a track on Quantum. Outstanding.

I wish John Myung and John Petrucci had done more

Yeah, and Myung's stuff isn't overly exciting.  I mean, it's good, but it just sounds like King's X with Ty doing all the lead vocals and just a bit more technicality in the rythm section.  And that's fine, but I'd like to hear Myung do some work where he just goes off more, gets a bit more experimental, and showcases his own uniqueness and talent a bit more.

I like his instructional video, because he does things like Solar Groove and Freeport Jam. Two very good examples of what he's capable of when he does things on his own. If he did some of that I'd be all over it

John Petrucci and Jordan Rudess - An Evening with John Pretucci and Jordan Rudess

Jesus Christ himself* comes down amidst a choir of 2 billion angels singing Handel's Hallelujah chorus. As KrotchRaut shred randomly on guitars made of dragon bones using picks made from God's kidney stones, Jesus heals a blind woman who promptly gives birth onstage to a creation of pure light.

*Yes, Jesus Christ himself. Nothing less will do.

Not much...

Dominici - O3 - part 2
Yngwie - Attack, Perpetual Flame
KISS box set (in Derek is on anything on it)

and I'll likely get LaBrie's new record. That's it. Side projects don't interest me much I guess.

this ^

and
 -Notes On A Dream

all that i purchased...

I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

Likewise. All I have is James LaBrie - Elements of Persuasion.

Does anyone here have less than I do??

I've given TA and LTE a fair shot I believe, I might still have stuff on my computer though I usually delete stuff I take for a test drive and dont' end up liking enough to purchase. Never heard any of Derek's stuff, or Neal Morse's solo stuff, though nothing in TA or Spock's Beard wow'ed me enough to give it a shot.

The first one interested me somewhat, but I just kind of lost track.  And then when I heard other bits and pieces of Kevin's post-DT output, I lost interest.

I'm a little stunned by how many people don't have "The Human Equation." I always considered that to be somewhat of a classic!

And yeah, I don't care for OSI much either. It's probably my least favorite of all the "side project" stuff. Not that I don't like electronic music, but Kev's style is just so dreary and his voice doesn't help. Not that I don't respect him immensely as an artist-- in fact, I really do feel Dream Theater were at their best with him-- If I want to listen to electronic music, I can't think of a single reason why I'd listen to OSI when I could be listening to Gorillaz. To me, Kevin Moore needs an outside ear to keep him grounded just as much as Portnoy or Petrucci.

My favorite side project would have to be either Transatlantic or James' work on Ayreon. Probably Transatlantic. Ew. Who am I kidding? TA are one of my favorite bands period. Definitely Transatlantic.
