I was obsessed with them in middle school. Then I grew up.
How do your musical tastes have anything to do with how mature you are?

Not musical tastes, but when I was younger I was more prone to shut out other material and become obsessed with something I deemed superior at the time. By 'growing up' I simply meant that I later realized I was being a dumb ass by shutting everything else out and needed to go experience more.

Okay, that makes sense then.

Well, you're certainly not very diverse in your musical tastes or you would realize that DT incorporates many of the sounds of the bands you mentioned and then some.

I love DT but hate most of the other bands mentioned. It has nothing to do with diversity, as DT are overall very different to the bands mentioned. Just a matter of preference, not diversity.

Well, they both go hand in hand to some degree.  If you only prefer just a handful of bands, then you're not very diverse.  If you only prefer DT's music, then you're not very diverse.  Seems pretty simple to me.

That still makes no sense.

Yeah, it makes about as much sense as hating Awake.   :\   C'mon Man.

This Dream Theater Addiction is really getting on my nerves.
I love DT. No doubt. But the fact that I love DT so much is giving me some inconvenience.
My main problem is that my ears are too accustomed to DT sound that it doesn't want to accept other sounds.
I've tried Pink Floyd, Rush, Yes, Opeth, Symphony X, Nightwish, Queenscyre, Fates Warning, Pain of Salvation, Porcupine Tree, Marillion and all those DT related or sounding bands, but my ears will never accept these sounds.

I'm having the exact opposite problem. My ears seem not to accept any band that sounds like Dream Theater any more, including Dream Theater. True story.

Nic35

Yeah I know what you mean. Now I'm listening to more bands than only Dream Theater. I started to listen to Morow radio on iTunes (a progressive station) and I discovered some bands that I actually really like, like Presto Ballet. It really helped me to get into more bands, because when I started to listen to DT, it was the only progressive band I knew.

Jamesman42

Luckily, music never gets old or stale for me, for some reason. I think it's because I can binge on a band like DT, go away for a while and diversify my taste, and come back and be rewarded all over again. I once did a 6-month ban of DT (except for a curiosity to check out something about Metropolis Pt. 1), and coming back to listen to them, it was like falling in love all over again.

That may just be me, though.
\o\ lol /o/

Such a meaningful contribution to the thread.

I was obsessed from November '05 until earlier this year I guess. It feels good to finally appreciate other music.
Now, I listen mostly to completely different music, like electro or pop, or rock like Foo fighters, or dance like Earth, wind and fire. I just realized I needed a break from DT and it feels so good.

Although I still love them...but if I see a tune from them on my playlists now I mostly remove them, because I just get sick of it, I just get that yuck feeling. I guess its because of overplaying the shit out of all of it.

Now I got 2 DT songs in my top 25, OAMOT from Budokan at 21st and TCOT at 22nd =D
THIS song is on a very safe 1st place: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A54ARXaHLoo

I guess I just need a break and some time to explore other fields :-)

Welcome To DT !!!!!

Yes this happened to me but the only problem was i had to wait for each album to come out since i started listening to them just before IAW came out, But I do know what you mean , i still listen to DT VERY regularly.
This hasn't happened to me again for a long time until this year I finally got into Pain of Salvation ,  the only difference is that i got into POS so late I got to get all there releases at once !!! (Only one I don't really care for is BE tho and the new linoleum is kind of meh too ) But then again both these bands have Lots of great albums threw and threw.

True Death of Life

For me, I usually have a favorite band (Metallica) and a band that I am currently obsessed with. Same with albums and songs. I was obsessed with DT for about 2 months. I still love them to pieces but I'm not all "OMGDREAMTHEATERBESTTHINGEVA" anymore.

About not "accepting" other sounds: there was a point where I just couldn't listen to Metallica. Sure, some's brutal, and I love that, but brutal prog was all I wanted at the time. The time signatures were way too normal.  :lol

darkshade

I recently went through a big DT craze, third one in my life (first was when I got into the band, second was when I got back into the band after not listening to years). It always surprises me, but this particular time I was careful not to go crazy as being burnt out on DT's music is a sad realization.

MoraWintersoul

I've been going through this since January, although I do try to listen to other bands but I'm pretty much obsessed with hearing at least a couple of songs per day and digging up everything I can find about DT. My band-obsession phases, where I can't shut up about them, usually last for a lot shorter, so I'm worried for my sanity here.

But who gives a shit, I'm always careful in not trying to overplay anything.

Scorpion

I did obsess over DT for a while. Now I appreciate them a lot and they are one of my favourite bands, but they're getting less play time at the moment. Though, tbh, it mostly comes with the albums that come out - when a band that I like bring out a new album, then I listen to it really intensively for a long time. Same with ADTOE, but now DT is kind of on the back-burner.

TheGreatPretender

Every once in a while, I get a little numb to DT. In which case, I'll either start listening to softer rock stuff like Rush, or heavier stuff like Megadeth or Fear Factory, or very occasionally, I'll even listen to rap for a little bit. But give me two weeks and I'll inevitably start missing and craving the DT sound and will always go back to DT. And I'm happy with that.

Lowdz

Being a DT fan means your taste is diverse as there are so many types of music in their songs, sometimes in the same song.  ;D

Yes, I'm a new DT fan, so I was wondering, if you actually had this DT Addiction before, how long did it last? I really want to try new bands.

Instead of dwelling on how the sounds are different and unacceptable, start focusing on the similarities.  For instance, when I listen to Shadows Fall, I love how they mix melodic vocals with growling vocals.  They also do the same thing with the instruments.  A diverse approach to song writing that is similar to DT but really not the same sound at all.  Symphony X also has some DT similarities as well, but a different approach to song writing that's really cool.  Gotta branch out and listen to other stuff man...

rumborak

My golden DT days are definitely over. I obsessed over them from Awake through 6DOIT, and that's a pretty good run.  Since then it's been "new album? Oh, OK, I'll check it out."
And while ADTOE was pretty good, once Heritage came out it barely got played since.

Not only with DT, but it's happened to me that I was entirely addicted to *one* band and even some bands I loved seemed uninteresting at the time.

So true.

It will pass, but I say just enjoy it for now.

SeRoX

I don't know you guys but my DT passion since probably 10 years or so didn't go down. When I hear about the album news I am like: OMGOMGOMG new album is coming! It's good or bad I never turn back to them. DT is the only foreign band makes me excited so much. I admit, it's really a huge down for me when I heard BC&SL but they recovered nicely and I like the new DT and their sound.

krands85

I am a bit like this now and have been for about 3 or 4 years  :omg:  ADTOE being such an awesome album has made my obsession even stronger  :lol

I'm really surprised that it's gone on this long and shows no signs of waning. Now I barely listen to anything other than DT. Even when I specifically decide to go and listen to something different, half the time I'll just think "pff, what's the point, I'd just enjoy DT more" and stick on I&W or something instead.

I used to listen to quite a lot of different bands, with none of them really dominating too much. Used to listen to a load of instrumental/post rock as well. But look at my last 12 months on Last.fm:

Plus, 49 of my top 50 most played tracks over the last year are DT.

It's not just listening to the studio tracks either. I love watching clips on Youtube of live performances, solo covers, split screen covers etc. So many times I've just gone to look at one clip and find myself still there an hour later, still looking at DT related clips.

I think I have a problem  :blush :lol

Whoaaaahh, ohhh, ohhhhh. Whoaaaahh, ohhhhh, ohhhhhh. Waaah, ahhh, haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaowwwwww

VioletS16

There was a time when I *only* listened to DT, but now I listen to a ton of other bands on a daily basis. My iPod is a weird, weird place, because it goes from Winter Rose, to Opeth, to Nightwish, to Gorgoroth, to Xandria, to Cradle of Filth, to Wongraven, and a bunch of others too.  :lol

This bit... we're in the same place. I say I'm going to go listen to something else and then find myself on youtube...

Miyazaki74

When I first discovered DT I was the same way. All I listened to was DT for months for the most part. I'm always like that with bands that I just discover and love their music. I'll be into them for a while but eventually I'll get bored and move on. I haven't been obsessed with a band in years now though. I just turn on shuffle on my i-pod and listen to a little bit of everything.

I've had this happen with probably about 25 - 30 bands over the last 16 years.  It will pass.
