This Dream Theater Addiction is really getting on my nerves.
I love DT. No doubt. But the fact that I love DT so much is giving me some inconvenience.
My main problem is that my ears are too accustomed to DT sound that it doesn't want to accept other sounds.
I've tried Pink Floyd, Rush, Yes, Opeth, Symphony X, Nightwish, Queenscyre, Fates Warning, Pain of Salvation, Porcupine Tree, Marillion and all those DT related or sounding bands, but my ears will never accept these sounds.

Yes, I'm a new DT fan, so I was wondering, if you actually had this DT Addiction before, how long did it last? I really want to try new bands.

Darkes7

Not only with DT, but it's happened to me that I was entirely addicted to *one* band and even some bands I loved seemed uninteresting at the time. It just happens with bands that manage to get you really obsessed, I guess. But like the song says, I think it's only a matter of time. ;)

orcus116

I dunno if I did this with DT but I've done it with other bands. I remember when I first started listening to Radiohead I couldn't listen to anything else as hard as I tried. After a few weeks it usually goes away but I remember being afraid I was getting too obsessed.

BlobVanDam

It will pass, but I say just enjoy it for now.

This.

That first half-year or so of DT obsession was an amazing time.

Dublagent66

Well, you're certainly not very diverse in your musical tastes or you would realize that DT incorporates many of the sounds of the bands you mentioned and then some.

I love DT but hate most of the other bands mentioned. It has nothing to do with diversity, as DT are overall very different to the bands mentioned. Just a matter of preference, not diversity.

It depends.  I don't really hear much of PF's influence on DT, to be honest.  I know it's there, and you'd be crazy to deny it, but there's very little DT that I think sounds like PF.

Phantasmatron

I'd say my DT-obsession phase lasted maybe four months or so.

But that was two albums ago.  Maybe it'll last you longer since there's more material for you to get into.

Enjoy.  :tup

Perpetual Change

Mine lasted so long because back then I couldn't really afford to buy albums whenever I wanted and was against downloading.  It's better that way, getting to spend some time with each album instead of hearing everything at once and not being able to digest it.

Volk9

Mine lasted about a year...or two. This was because I wasnt able to get all their albums at once/very frequently. I couldnt always find them so it took me a while to acquire everything. I remember I coaxed my mom into buying 6DOIT for me (im 20 btw)

Well, they both go hand in hand to some degree.  If you only prefer just a handful of bands, then you're not very diverse.  If you only prefer DT's music, then you're not very diverse.  Seems pretty simple to me.

ariich

I never stopped liking other bands when I had my initial DT obsession, but I did listen to mostly DT for quite a while.

I am just winding down from that obsession. I am listening to Symphony X again they were my original #1 and trying to rate their songs. I've added Scar Symmetry and Sylosis to my ears too. I really want to stray away from Prog/Metal for a while but its too hard :-\

Ultimetalhead

My total obsession ended very recently. Lasted about 8 months I'd say.  :hat

Shadoshi

I was obsessed with them in middle school. Then I grew up.

CountVoorhees

Dream Theater made me a snob to shitty "popular" music.

Yeah for a while I was the same way. Then I realized that there is actually good radio-friendly music still out there.

CountVoorhees

Not for me, I still can't stand the radio. It all sounds like generic garbage.

Shadoshi

I don't like the radio either. But none the less, there are mainstream bands that aren't bad. You just have to dig a little.

robwebster

True that. Except that I like radio.

There's a lot of turd on the radio, sure, but that's true of anything! There's a lot of turd in world of obscure music, too. Just listen to any one of those Italian bands that add you on MySpace every five minutes who like to imitate Dream Theater and use the word "sphere" a lot. However, there's also a lot of gems in there, and the same goes for the mainstream. Just as there's a reason that manufactured crap sells in massive droves, there's a lot of good music that gets plastered all over the radio and deservedly so.

Only difference is we're not spoonfed the bad obscure stuff, so it's easier to avoid bad obscure bands you don't like.

Clever. :lol

Darkes7

Since I pretty much grew up with Iron Maiden on one side and U2 on the other, I've learned that even though 95% of the "fashionable" mainstream is crap, there are bands that are extremely popular but got up there thanks to their music and can write it really well.

Dream Theater taught me something else - looking at music in a more precise way, not just the whole song, but also how each instrument works, listening to all details, etc. Before I hadn't even known what's the difference between low electric guitar and bass. :lol Another thing I learned is being open-minded, Octavarium as my first album probably added a lot to that.

Is it really just "clever," or is it "FORMING CHAINS IN THE SPHERE OF MY MIND?!"

I do have an obsession with DT's music, that I listen a lot. My situation is a bit different than you guys. Most of the time I am forced to listen, as it's my job. Since the 8V tour, I would say other than a few instances all I would/ could listen to is DT. The only break I got was for LTE, and that was 8 months of nothing but the LTE LA show. Depending on MP's mood, I might get a break coming up.

Scrub206

lol im still addicted. for the most part. and its been what 4-5 years? but its starting to lighten up a bit. just a little bit tho. im still listening to all of Mikes side projects... and my odd addiction to k-pop, but thats a whole nother story.

That still makes no sense.

splent

Just don't listen to them TOO much or you will forever be sick of them.

That happens, although somewhat uncommon.  But not unheard of.

How do your musical tastes have anything to do with how mature you are?

Not musical tastes, but when I was younger I was more prone to shut out other material and become obsessed with something I deemed superior at the time. By 'growing up' I simply meant that I later realized I was being a dumb ass by shutting everything else out and needed to go experience more.

yeshaberto

I've been a fan since Images, and my appreciation for DT continues to grow...I'm with others, enjoy it while it lasts

PixelDream

I've been addicted to DT for almost three years straight from 2001 until 2004. After that I was still a pretty huge fan, and I still am.

Now, Porcupine Tree, I've been addicted to them since I heard In Absentia, and I am still. I'm playing one of their albums every day, and the last couple of weeks it's the daily 'Incident' for me. So amazing, I can't get bored of it.

lonestar

I tend to go through phases.  I'll have a Dt phase, then go through The Who, Yes, Marillion, I.Q., The Kinks, whatever.  Currently in a Yes phase thanks to quadra's top 25.  But like others said, enjoy it.  New music is like a new woman, you never know what to expect, but you know it will feel good.

axeman90210

as the guy who listened to SFAM almost nonstop for about 3.5 months after I got it, yeah, this does happen, but eventually it passes :lol
