The infamous Mike Portnoy "growling" section on A Nightmare to Remember?

Cool Chris

Same as I always have. Let's be kind and say "negatively."
Maybe the grass is greener on the other side because you're not over there fucking it up.

Out of place and borderline ruins the song for me. I literally laughed out loud the first time I heard it. Man, that dude was just so in love with hamfisting whatever was in his cd changer into DT's writing process.

geeeemo

I am in the minority. I like it. Its a surprise. It gives extra texture. I get bored fairly easily and this kind of thing makes me smile. I hope for more in rhe future.

Stadler

Not my favorite moment in the catalogue; the song isn't great even without that, though.  James sings the hell out of it, and the solo is decent, but the constant double bass makes it boring to me. It's #68 on my list from a couple years ago, but wouldn't be that high was I to do the list now.

Wasn't a big deal to me then. Not a big deal to me now. The coverage this gets blows my mind!

Exactly that. And the music doesn't fit the lyrics, anyway. But then this is Dream Theater we're talking about. The same band that thinks an alarm clock as you're falling asleep makes sense

much preferred James singing it in 2019 and 2020 (and MM playing it), that's all I'll mention

Yeah, I don't really care about it either because I never listen to ANTR anyway  :P

MirrorMask

I can musically live with that, but the contrast between the music and the lyrics is unintentionally hilarious.

BY THE GRACE OF GOD ABOVE, EVERYONE SURVIVED, RHAWRRRR!!!!!!

Maybe they could have got the message across in a different way, like, dunno....

It's a miracle he lived, it's a blessing no one died
All survived but the scars are still burning inside

Or something similar.

I didn't like it then, and I still don't like it.  I like the lyrics less, and the general bloat of the song even less.

BTW, there's no prize for starting the most threads.  Just in case you thought there was lol

Same now as before: I don't love it or hate it.  It's good that they aren't full-on growls, as those in general have not aged well and sound even more cartoonish now than they did in the 00s, so being pseudo-growls in a manner of speaking works to their advantage in a sense.  A Nightmare to Remember is not a song I listen to often anymore (love the first half, the second half is merely good and gives me that "when is this going to end" feeling), but I guess a good way to put it is that that vocal section is not a make or break one for me.

Yep, and we already have a thread dedicated to ANTR, which was posted in as recently as last June.

The Index of Albums & Songs thread is a big help for finding existing threads, rather than starting brand new ones for specific albums/songs.

Good point.

It's still firmly the worst recorded moment in the entire DT discography.

TheBarstoolWarrior

It hasn't aged like wine but I will give credit where credit is due. He tried something different.

I think a guest vocalist - someone who specializes in this type of vocal - could have made it work better than it did.

yeah, Mikael Akerfeldt (or just, you know, leave it clean to sing for James)
