All my natural instincts are begging me to stop
But somehow I carry on, heading for the top
A physical absurdity, a tremendous mental game
Helping me understand exactly who I am

Quote from: Thoughtspart3 on February 03, 2025, 10:32:31 AMYea,it is always sad when Jordon is buried by the guitars. I never knew how much this was the case until I was able to get the BCSL stems and remix the album. It was amazing being able to hear everything Jordon does. Changes the feel of many songs for the better. Jordon is there, you just can't hear him much of the time.

I had completely forgotten that BCSL had stems as part of a deluxe edition. I just remembered ADTOE having stems for the opening track.

Quote from: Ben_Jamin on February 05, 2025, 09:13:00 PMI wish the band would release the stems again. The musical experiments we got from that were awesome.

Edit: Like this gem...

That was really cool.

I wishes the stems were available separately. I see some sets on discog.com, not sure I want to spend that much on the whole set.
Devour Feculence!

While I liked the other songs released, Midnight Messiah really got my horns up even though I still call it Machine Messiah. Not that that's a bad thing.  ;D

Yeah, someone really should write and record a song with that title.

Hopefully that happens soon.

and that was a double pun on your part too. (you'll see why I'm sure. Machine Messiah and Soon innit, that being part of The Gates Of Delirium)

Take a trip back to 2017.

Midnight Messiah is one of the most fun songs that DT has written in a long time.  Great groove, great riffs, bouncy vocal melodies and catchy as hell.

PreHilbert

First of all, I really like this song. I skimmed through the comparisons in the thread (As I Am, Bigger Picture..) but they do not seem to match.

Two things: to me the chorus sounds a little bit like Viper King

And more importantly, it seems to me the lyrics are quite unequivocally being about Portnoy's comeback to the band. Has this been mentioned already?

Well, the verses are kinda As-I-Am-ish as you can get...

Quote from: wkiml on June 08, 2012, 09:06:35 AMwould have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Quote from: Stadler on February 08, 2025, 12:49:43 PMI wouldn't argue this.

Cool Chris

Maybe the grass is greener on the other side because you're not over there fucking it up.

So... with all the references to past Dream Theater lyrics in this song, does anyone know if the line "over and over again" is a deliberate reference to "A View from the Top of the World"? I know it's not exactly an uncommon phrase, but "View" is still very fresh in everyone's mind, so it can't be a complete coincidence, right?

No it's not.

Yes it can.

Portnoy wrote these lyrics, and used callbacks to some of his former lyrics.  Pretty sure he didn't write any lyrics for AVFTTOTW.

Doubtful, as the other references are from songs MP wrote lyrics for

Well I wish I could have seen Petrucci's face when he saw the lyrics for the first time.

Probably same face when he finished his Dead Asleep lyrics.
