As disappointing as it is to see Portnoy back in the band, the single is alright. Definitely derivative of their older work, nothing particularly groundbreaking, but at least it's solid.

Which could be a problem, since with a new album comes potential new fans, so this really isn't exactly the best time to limit who signs up if we want our community to grow, although truth be told I'd rather this community stay small but all of us be friendly and respectful than see it grow but get filled with trolls and assholes.

Honestly, I regret making my initial post in this public setting. Speculation like this belongs in the PM arena.

As an aside, however, I remain frustrated that my quiet little of the corner of the internet is feeling more and more like Reddit. I prefer forums (especially this one) because I value long-form discourse. I also do my best to take every person I interact with (both online and in life) on good faith.

Obviously, someone is having a grand ol' time logging on and messing with us. But when stories about horrific surgeries start getting tossed around, I find myself compelled to listen and engage. Dumb. I know. But that's just how I am.

'Trolling' has confused me my entire life, and especially for as long as I've engaged with people online. For the life of me I will never understand how anyone can derive any sort of pleasure or gratification from 'messing with someone.'

That said, I refuse to give in cynicism, tempting as it may be. I will continue to assume the best in people until the day I die. However, I also tend to operate on a 'one strike' basis.

I suspect there is a single account/user behind all of this nonsense, and I choose to completely ignore them (and all of their respective accounts).

Fortunately, there are dozens of others on here that seem to be on the same page, so all in all, I think we are still going strong here at DTF

Trolling can be fun, but it 1: needs to be justified and 2: needs to be short term otherwise it borders on harassment. I've trolled my fair share of people online as well as in real life, but it was always as petty revenge on behalf of someone I know, and it also only lasted for an hour or two at the most before I stopped and moved on with my life. Eventually it gets to the point where you transition into being the villain and you're wasting your own life on messing with others.

As a stark anti-troll, I think that there is never a time or place it's okay to mess with people or their feelings, especially because behind the guise/obfuscation of the internet it is almost always impossible to detect sarcasm or joking. I agree with WilliamMunny's approach to always take people seriously and in good faith, and yeah, when surgery stories start getting thrown in (and it turns out to be trolling) that takes a toll on everyone's mental well-being. One way to think of it is like Uncle Rico's/Stewie Griffin's/TRex Chicken's lies about his neck/spinal surgery have led some (maybe even many) of us to experience increased frustration and anxiety, which leads to an increase in stiff necks. It's almost like trolling can have real life consequences that aren't that dissimilar from the "jokes" being employed to perform said trolling.

Brother, there aren't enough "likes" from me for this post. 

I feel like these trolling events are taking a dump on my living room carpet.  Not fair, perhaps, and a "me" problem, but it's how I feel.  I also don't get the "trolling" thing; to me it's bullying, and to me it's yet another sign of personal insecurity.  I mean, this is how you make yourself feel better day to day?  This is how you relieve your stress or anxiety, calling other people - who you've perhaps never even met - names and disparaging them? 

Maybe I'm missing that gene, but I don't get any pleasure from fucking with people.  It's like "Road rage" to me.

I think there's a clear difference between "trolling" and harassment, just like there's a difference between pranks and emotional abuse. Some people sadly don't understand the difference, and it ends up causing real problems. With pranks, there's a difference between "I taped the spray nozzle on the kitchen sink shut so you get a little wet when you turn the sink on" and "I cut holes in all of your work clothes so you can't go to work today and have to replace all of your clothes". Similarly, with trolling, I think there's a difference between "you told my coworker that her family is going to hell so I'm gonna blast metal music while you're stuck in a van with me" and "I'm gonna create multiple accounts on this forum and verbally abuse long time members because I'm mad that my original account got banned". At some point these things go too far and it transitions to the prankster or troll becoming the clear villain.

And yes, the "innocent" trolling example is something that I actually did. I still have the Spotify playlist.
