Trav

I just got two tickets for the Dallas show and two for the San Antonio show for my son and me. It'll be his first concerts, and my first time doing multiple shows. We get to have a little father and son road trip out of it! I can't wait!

SoundscapeMN

I'm unlikely to see this tour, at least on the 1st leg per No Minnesota date unfortunately
"I have facility enough that I can throw down something, and play it, and play it correctly, and play it in time, but that doesn't make good records.  What makes good records for me, is when you capture a performance or you get some feeling that you get on tape and that you know you can't plan for it" -Kevin Gilbert

I WILL be VERY DISAPPOINTED if this is just a "greatest hits" :mehlin type of tour!

Sounds like it will be though. With the same setlists.

I don't think it'll STRICTLY be a best of setlist - hopefully they'll throw a couple rare songs in there to make it more exciting

DTiwbwMP

I really just hope that "The Glass Prison", "In The Name of God", "Voices" "Octavarium" and "Only a Matter of Time" find their way into the setlist at something during this tour!

I'd bank on the bolded. And if they indeed do the 12 SS, then you're definitely NOT getting ITNOG.

I gotta rant abt something for a min. Sorry in advance lol

My buddy wanted to join me at the radio city show. He just needed a few hours to get home and buy his ticket. So I bought my seat right near the aisle. Left a single open seat on both sides of me. Thought "this is perfect him and and wife can grab those seats. There are plenty of single seats and groups of seats everywhere, who would randomly sit next to one random person?" Apparently I thought wrong because out of the HUNDREDS of seats available the two seats next to me were chosen with 10 damn mins! Now I will wait till my friends secure their seats and move next to them. Most likely worse seats. I have half a mind to stay where I am to say "wtf is wrong with you???" To the two random people on both sides of me lol. Sorry I needed to rant abt this because it's been pissing me off for 3 days 😂

That sucks, but plenty of people attend concerts alone. Plus, it could be that it is a couple and they are planning to ask the single person between them to switch seats  :rollin it has happened to be befofe

I feel like I probably bought that ticket!  :) :) :) :) :) :)

In any event, to what Lonk said, I go to shows by myself all the time.  Why not?  I'm an adult.  I have a stable family and good friends; three hours of a concert don't automatically turn me into a loser or something, and I'm not one to need constant companionship.  Plus, I get to do what I want; storm the stage? Sure.  Hang to see if the artist comes out to meet fans?  Sure.  Meet up with other forumers (in the case of DT or related bands)?  Sure.  Not worry whether so-and-so is having a good time?  Sure.

I went to Morsefest by myself, and had a grand old time and met some cool new friends and saw a couple old ones too.

Exactly.

I am sure he means "I don't want the band to play the songs the collective fanbase loves the most, but the songs eight people on the internet want to hear," but that's not gonna happen.  Try and picture that conversation...

Mike: "Hey guys, the fans always go nuts for Pull Me Under, As I Am, Metropolis and The Spirit Carries On, so are you all good with me putting them on the set list."

John M. "Sure."

John P and Jordan nod.

James: "Not sure about that, Mike. There are like three people on the internet who are tired of those songs being played, so maybe we should not include them and play You Not Me and maybe an old Majesty song that two people at every show will know instead."

Mike: "F'ing DTF!"

Despite playing SFAM on the 2019 tour, PMU got the biggest reaction from the audience.

Setlist Scotty

It's to be expected that there will be some perennial favorites included in any given setlist to appeal to the more casual fans - and a good portion of the fanbase are more on the casual end. But OTOH, DT's fanbase, like Rush's, consists of a much larger hardcore fanbase that does know the full catalog than most other bands. It's one of the reasons why the band doesn't have to have AIA, TSCO and PMU in every setlist thankfully.

I would expect that there will be one or two rarities sprinkled in the set, as should be the case for the diehard fans. That's one of the things MP was always willing to do, having the fan's mindset himself. In fact, I know this will go down like a lead balloon lead zeppelin :P for a bunch of you, but I'd wager we'll see Raw Dog make an appearance during this tour and I wouldn't be surprised if one of the FII outtakes or You *or* Me also gets aired live as well.
Quote from: BlobVanDam on November 13, 2015, 07:37:14 PMAs a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

I'd be ok with all of that. I actually got pretty pumped during Pull Me Under in 2023, even after 25-ish shows and seeing it a bunch. It's a great song. And both As I Am and Spirit have incredible guitar solos that I'm willing to hear any time. But I'd jump at the chance to see something different like Raw Dog or You/Me or Where Are You Now or Disappear or Out of Reach or Status Seeker or really anything with a hint of rarity that I haven't yet seen.

cramx3

It's an evening with and as stated DT don't have hits.  It's going to be a diverse set list that has some of the popular choices and some of the deeper cuts.  I feel like that's expected if the new album isn't out yet.

We can also assume it won't be heavy on MM material, maybe not much at all if anything. (my guess is one or two songs)

Quote from: TheCountOfNYC on September 15, 2024, 06:42:14 PMI have five wishes for this tour: Lines in the Sand, The Glass Prison, Stream of Consciousness, Octavarium, and The Best of Times

For me, if the setlist doesn't have either TGP or 8VM, I'll be a bit bummed.

Also, JLB... are we really going to get a set of songs that he struggles with? (I&W and Awake songs)

hefdaddy42

I mean, it's going to have some shit I love and some shit I can't stand.  Just like almost every other DT setlist I've ever seen lol

There's not much "shit I can't stand" in DT's catalog, so I'd replace that with "songs I've seen 20 times already"  :lol

LIke I honestly don't really want to see I&W songs or SFAM songs.  I know some will be played, but those may be my least interested albums to hear from just from seeing those songs so many times.  Also, last time seeing PMU was not easy on the ears, that song specifically.

Ben_Jamin

I would laugh my ass off if they played all the songs on the Greatest Shits album.

If DT does have greatest hits what songs would they be?

As I Am
TSCO
Panic Attack
PMU

I don't like saying things like this because it comes off dickish, but last tour was the worst I've ever heard James since I started listening to them in 2004 (I've seen them close to 20 times since then). I have to wonder if the band was caught off guard by it once the tour started and just had to eat the decision. That's the downside to the more modern shows, where every bit of the set is pre-planned and all of the stage is programmed around it.

Even if James is sounding good on the new album and in the studio, it doesn't mean he'll be able to sustain that on the back-to-back EU/NA tours. Dream Theater should be choosing every song with James' wellbeing in mind, and maybe even have backup options for two or three of the tougher songs.
