Jordan just posted keyboard recordings starting in a couple days! Acoustic grand piano waiting for him at headquarters. Can't wait for this album!

I guess this means bass recordings are done or about to be done.

Every day we didn't have any kind of update from the band was dedicated to bass recordings.

;D

HOF

Do they even need to record the bass parts if you can't hear them? ;)
Quote from: TAC on December 12, 2024, 05:40:22 PM"No way" is kind of strong, but I do lean with HOF.

That's a good question.
Quote from: wkiml on June 08, 2012, 09:06:35 AMwould have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Quote from: Stadler on February 08, 2025, 12:49:43 PMI wouldn't argue this.

No, listen to the original version of And Justice For All by Metallica. No bass.

i have a feeling we get an update from JMX finishing bass recording this week!

We actually have had one every day since the writing process for the new album began.
Only we couldn't hear it.

MP just said that keyboards will start in a few weeks, and vocals he thinks the next month. And mentioned that he has never spent this much time making an album

"...even like a couple of weeks ago, James flew back out, came down from Japan (sic-?) and we spent time collaborating on vocal melodies so lyrics can be written to those melodies" - MP in the same video

So, did something change in the planning? Or is Jordan's perception of 'a couple of days' different than mine?

JR mentioned this on Facebook someone said in this thread:

'Jordan just posted keyboard recordings starting in a couple days! Acoustic grand piano waiting for him at headquarters. Can't wait for this album!'

gzarruk

The thing is, that video with MP was posted today, but it wasn't recorded today. When he got asked about the dates in South America, he said "only Brazil for now, but we have more coming" and we already have the date in Argentina announced, so the video is from a few days/weeks.

HOF

He said John's guitar parts were done, and then said "this week we're in bass land," which suggest Myung did his parts whenever this was recorded, which was some time after JP finished his parts.

😱✨ Oh boy!

I know, right?  I love all the sounds DT has and that Jordan brings. But when I first was getting into DT, the classical piano with the metal.. :heart That was the itch that always needed to have scratched. I grew up studying classical piano, but when first was introduced to rock music, I fell in love with the electric guitar. They are perfect mates.  ;D

Imagine the album blows?  :lol :lol :lol

lol it would be crazy.

I know it's going to be good because they're putting a ton of work into it. The last time the pressure was really on, they churned out ADTOE which is a masterpiece. How good will it be exactly is a question in my mind but not doubting for a moment it'll be at least 7/10.
Disclaimer: All opinions stated are my own unless otherwise specified. I do not personally know any present or former members of DT. From time to time where the context is or should be obvious, I may decline to explicitly label my words as opinion. I cannot predict the future.

I hope MP shows a little restraint as I'm sure in his excitement he was eager to fill every second with crazy drumming.

Yes!!! 😍 I too love what Jordan brings to the music, apart from James he's my other favorite band member (I am literally a fan since the moment I first heard the Octavarium intro!). As one who, like yourself, studied classical music and loved metal at the same time, I completely understand! 💙✨

Look, my prevailing criticism of the Mangini years is exactly that: there's not one spot I can name on the five albums where Mangini opted for one or two bass drum hits when 137 (see what I did there?) will do.

I too hope that it's not excessive, and ALL the playing (not just the drumming) is tasteful, but I think that this is not a concern that should be leveled directly at Portnoy, at least without having heard even one note of his playing on this new material.

I get people not liking MM style, but, c'mon, this is simply not true. For example, the end of A New Beginning, I can't imagine MP playing that so straight. And it was just a blatant example, but sure there are others.

Look, it's got an element of hyperbole, and I understand that.  But for every example where it's not true (and The Astonishing is an outlier here) there's at least two FOR ME where it is.  And I'm not interested in making everyone else agree with me; I'm not interested in disparaging Mangini.  He's an AMAZING drummer.  This isn't necessarily about "fact", it's the impression I get when I listen to the music.  Gut.  Visceral.   I like the chemistry that exists between the core group (John, John and Mike P.).

BTW, I also think the chemistry between those 3 is unmatchable. :hefdaddy

That section is as close as DT have been to a groove in many years, and still it loses all the swing from MM's insistence to make every hihat hit the exact same velocity. If MP can get some groove back, I'd let him go a little more crazy if he wants. I'll take that tradeoff every day of the week.

devieira73

It's not the way I hear it, but it's totally fair to dislike MM's feel and groove, very different from MP's approach for sure! (which I always loved)

Regardless of whether or not some people end up disliking DT16 they won't be able to claim it was rushed :)

They all must have gotten together, felt the waves coming on, looked at each other and said "it's time to take the time."

Just a thought.

Maybe it is way too long process than usual because they also re-write and re-discover some of their songs to fit James' current condition.
