I think I want to try and compile what I would coincide the "cliche rules" that every DT fan has when talking about this bands music.

This is honestly totally for fun, so feel free to add in any other "rules" I missed. I tried to check for as much bias as possible, but if others contribute, it would be more unbiased. The more the better!

1. There is no such thing as a bad DT album
2. There is no good album past Scenes From A Memory
3, DT needs to write more simple songs. They come off as a bunch of wanks otherwise
4. DT needs to write more complex songs. They sound complacent otherwise.
5. DT is getting too predictable and needs to change it up.
6. DT is changing it up too much.
7. DT is too experimental on *Insert song/album.
8. Old DT is best.
9. New DT is best.
10. DT needs to write more stories. They can't write about feelings that well.
11. DT needs to stop writing songs with stories. They have cliche narratives.
12. DT can't write about politics.
13. DT should write more about politics.

This reminds me of Metal heads wearing And Justice For All blinkers and not acknowledging that the band even existed from 1991 onwards.

Back in the old MP forum days (like, 2003 2004) that was always the answer.

Just gonna drop this here for reference:

Quote12. Own every side-project a member of Dream Theater has been involved in. Listen to approximately none of them regularly.
45. Start a Dream Theater cover band with friends just starting out playing instruments. Spend half of the rehearsal talking shit about punk bands and how people don't understand your music.
46. Play a shitty version of a humongously difficult DT song at a Battle of the Bands-type contest. Metropolis Part 1 or Dance of Eternity are both good choices, as is Erotomania.
52. Hate Falling into Infinity. If the feeling that you actually enjoy FII(even the "proggier" songs like TOT)sneaks up on you during a glitch of concentration, remind yourself that DT sold out.
53. Actually, state that DT sold out on every good occasion. This means every time their name is mentioned
96. In case you wondered, Dream Theater is and will always be the benchmark for prog metal. The more something sounds like Images and Words, the more progressive it is.

This made me laugh!
Maybe the grass is greener on the other side because you're not over there fucking it up.

- Bring MP up at every opportunity and blame everything you currently dislike about the band on his absence
- Bash SC & BC&SL while blaming everything you dislike about those albums on MP's presence

::)

MP was my fave member until he left. Then it was like ok thats who you actually were all along.

That guy on YouTube who plays Mangini era songs with Portnoy's drumming proves how he wouldn't fit in the band nowadays with his five drum fills on every song.

I just dont think Portnoy's style would fit the band now.

I kinda agree on that, but that guy is probably putting in a lot of things that Portnoy would not even do. That is total 100 % conjecture though. I just think basing this off someone doing an impression is not the best thing to do.

I do however think Portnoy would feel a bit out of place now. Simply because it has been almost 12 years. The fans have gotten used to MM and the band is working so well together now. It would just upset things again.
