Pending hearing the new one, it's

1. DT12
2. ADTOE
3. DOT

4. TA

DTA

The Astonishing. I don't see the new one beating it, so it'll probably my remain my favorite.

1. The Astonishing
2. A Dramatic Turn Of Events
3. DT12
4. D/T

bosk1

I truly love them all, but it is too early to even think about ranking the new one yet.  So ADTOE has to take the top spot.

1.  ADTOE (#3 in the total DT discog)
2.  Dream Theater (#4 overall)
3.  TA
4.  D/T

Revenge319

Haven't listened to the new album yet, but I'll be back to re-rank once I've gotten used to it.

1. The Astonishing (#5 overall)
2. A Dramatic Turn of Events (#6 overall)
3. Distance Over Time (#7 overall)
4. Dream Theater (#12 overall)

Destiny Of Chaos

Way too early to rank the new one, but I don't see it ever topping ADToE and its 4 headed monster of amazing songs.

Kotowboy

I honestly don't get the outright hatred for The Astonishing.

It's not like it's their St. Anger.

Pettor

1. D/T
2. ADTOE
3. TA

10. DT12

New album will be competing with D/T. I already believe it's a stronger album than ADTOE.

Essentially mine, but with 1/2/3 tied and an obnoxious number of lines between 4 and 5.

1. The Astonishing (3 overall)

2. A View (5 overall)

3. D/T (6)

4. ADTOE (8)

5. DT12 (10)

ADTOE
AVFTOW
DOT
DT
TA

Although I agree it is a bit early to rank the new one, I just love ADTOE too much and don't see it being thrown down. I've listened to it about 5 times already, but on the first I could tell it is best than all the others and below ADTOE.

Dellers

The way I see it so far:

A Dramatic Turn Of Events
A View From The Top Of The World
Distance Over Time
The Astonishing

I honestly don't get the outright hatred for The Astonishing.

It's not like it's their St. Anger.

It's exactly like their St Anger for me, in that I can probably stand to listen to one or two tracks before I start wanting to eat my own head.

Unlike St Anger, though, I think it's an admirable piece of work, but I found it unappealing in the extreme.

I don't think it's crap or it sucks. I wish I liked it and have tried to.

Why? by Devin Townsend is a musical-theatre-esque thing that I completely adore, btw.

Kotowboy

I honestly don't see how it's "An abomination LMAO"....

Just cause every song isn't the Dance Of Eternity ?

People have different opinions. You don't have to understand it.

Kotowboy

It's not even that.

" I don't care for the Astonishing :) " is one thing

" LMAO WORST ALBUM EVER MADED. AN ABSOLUTE ASS POLISHING ABOMINATION  :lol :lol " is quite another. As if it was Dream Theater's Metal Machine Music or something.

preliminary because I dont know where DT15 will shake out ultimately and I have played the crap out of the other MM albums, TA aside.

1. ADTOE
2. AVFTTOTW
3.DoT
4. DT12 (actually hesitating about this because I think DT12 is underrated and possibly #2 on this list)
5. TA

Yeah, TA is full of beautiful melodies and vocals. But that's not some people's thing.

Not liking The Astonishing is one thing, but the minute a DT fan calls it "the worst thing over" or an abomination, I know not to take their opinions seriously going forward, so there is that.

Yeah, I get this. I for one like the album. And I don't really get the hate. I guess I just scroll past those comments now.

I think for the most part people don't necessarily hate it because the music just sucks. It's that they don't like the story, they think it's too long (bloated), too "light", or a combination of those things.

*insert responses that say that I'm wrong and they hate the music in general*

TheBarstoolWarrior

It's not the worst album made by any means...it's just the worst DT album ever made  :)

A View From The Top Of The World is easily the best Mangini era album.

Yup. The Astonishing is my least favorite DT album, but I can listen to it and enjoy the good parts. I appreciate it for what it is.
I just think it's too long for it's own good.

It's too early into the new album cycle to cast an official vote, so for now I'll say this:

-ADToE/AVFtTotW: I know after a few listens that I like AVFtTotW better than the three that came immediately before it, but I'm not quite ready to rank it above ADToE yet, so for now I'll call it a tie.
-TA: I listened to it all the way through for the first time in a while and remembered how great it is. Outside of Our New World you can't really listen to any of these songs on their own, but on the rare occasion that I have two and a half hours of free time, this album is always an incredible experience.
-DoT: This didn't quite have the staying power I thought it would at first, but there's plenty of great music to be had here. S2N, At Wit's End, and Pale Blue Dot are all great, but the rest is just good at best and mediocre at worst.
-DT12: As middle of the road as they come. I like every song on this album but don't love any of them.

Favorite and least favorite song on each album.

-ADToE
Favorite: Breaking All Illusions
Least Favorite: Build Me Up, Break Me Down (my least favorite Dream Theater song)

-DT12
Favorite: Surrender to Reason
Least Favorite: Enigma Machine

-TA
Favorite: A New Beginning
Least Favorite: The Walking Shadow

-DoT
Favorite: Pale Blue Dot
Least Favorite: Room 137

-AVFtTotW (early impressions, ranking subject to change)
Favorite: Sleeping Giant
Least Favorite: The Alien

I was torn between TA & D/T, but went with TA to spite people. ;)

I went with TA because it is, to me, obviously the best of the lot (new album is too new to judge, but it would have to elevate big time from my initial impressions to even come close to The Astonishing).

Kotowboy

New album smell notwithstanding here is my ranking currently.

1. A View From The Top Of The World

2. Distance Over Time.

3. The Astonishing

4. A Dramatic Turn Of Events

5. Dream Theater

The Letter M

Could be the honeymoon-phase but right now AVFTTOTW is sitting up top (pun intended) of the Post-Portnoy albums!
