How about learning the song by...wait for it...Learning the song?

:tup simple, right ?

Considering that learning by mimicking stuff like a parrot is a terrible idea, and Mangini isn't teaching the song itself but a concept (used when composing the song), yeah, no. Definitely no.

Mangini is teaching how to approach "complex" rhythms in an intuitive way; in the video he plays a 7-tuplet fill in a way that sounds like 'swung' triplets. He studied a lot, and can play without thinking of the concepts themselves, but he has the knowledge to analyze those things and explain them too; paraphrasing him, by the way.

And I have said this in a different thread, if you had someone with his knowledge as a teacher, it would be a scam if he only taught you to mimick written things. And then perhaps act like playing in 7/8 or shifting between time sigs is some deep, complex concept that only awards winners understand. But I digress  ::)

erwinrafael

Yeah, what I like about Mangini is that he does not sugarcoat that some of the stuff he plays are complex, but he teaches not just how you can play it but how you can also also "hear" it, visualize it, and hopefully compose something like it.

Nice summing up. I think it's great that MM shares this stuff.

Sorry if this has been brought up already but, listening to The Alien again realizing that the lyrics state "digital man" and the background countdown actually loosly mimics background NASA word from the song "Countdown" both from Rush's Signals album, which is from my, along with with Permanent Waves and Moving Pctures, high school years... Yes I'm old.... Lol... Anyhoo... might there be an "Analog kid" lyric on this album?

TAC

You are old.  ;D

Moving Pictures was 1981..The Lovely Mrs TAC graduated in 1981. :lol
Quote from: wkiml on June 08, 2012, 09:06:35 AMwould have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Quote from: Stadler on February 08, 2025, 12:49:43 PMI wouldn't argue this.

Now that we're well into the first week of September, any possibility of a new single anytime soon?  We need something new to talk about since the discussions on The Alien have seem to run it's course..  👽💤

nikatapi

I expect a new single until the end of next week. I dare to guess it will be Invisible Monster.

Kotowboy

I'd rather no new single before the album.

I know I don't have to listen to it - but if there's another ten minute single that's 20 minutes of the new album we've already heard.

I'm also considering not listening to anything new until i get my hands on the album. I've already overplayed The Alien.

Yep - as it's only a month and a bit away, I'm not listening to anything else to keep things fresh. Loved when I've played The Alien, but that's me until the album comes out in it's entirety now 👍

I originally said that DT's new album cycle is 3 weeks ahead of Yes and will follow the same pattern. Same label, Yes 1st single released exactly 3 weeks before Alien. Yes' 2nd single was released last week.. so I'm gonna say the week beginning 20th September for the next single.

I've barely listened to The Alien. Maybe a handful of times but I don't need to listen to it again until the album is out.

I caught these allusions but I didn't make the same connections as deeply as you did. Good catch!  :tup

Let's hope there's more!

Good for you. This is definitely a grower, and it will be better to listen to in the context of the full album.

:lolpalm: oh for gods sake...

I meant because I don't want to get sick of it before the album comes out.

Jesus Christ.

mike099

Have not listened to the single and plan to wait until the whole album is available.  Excited to see them again in December and plan to not look at the set list before the concert.

Yeah i didn't disagree, did my post seem sarcastic? ???
I actually think it's a good approach

Kotowboy

However i'm like that with albums too. I don't know when I last listened to Distance Over Time. I tend to listen to new albums a lot in the first few weeks. Then I just stop listening to them..

That makes the most recent album seem a lot newer.

Adami

I've heard the song 4-5 times now and yea...it's just not doing anything for me. There's nothing bad or offputting about it really, it just kind of goes in one ear and out the other. Nothing sticks with me other than the impression that MM did a fantastic job. I don't remember specific beats or fills, but I do remember thinking that he's crushing it throughout, and I am not a huge fan of his style. Nothing JP, JR, JMX, or JLB did left any impression on me. Just kind of normal DT riffs/leads/solos/vocals.

That is quite clearly your goal, after seeing your posts for a decade.

The forum would be better off without the trolling behavior seen on essentially all of your posts.

Also, the self pity act is played out and not even well done.

I gotta level up my game, Kotow is leading the annoyance race, I'm way behind.
But I like him, his posts are fun. Way more interesting and talk-worthy than the average cold takes parrot  :lol

Pretty much.

If "everyone" is getting pissy at your posts, you may want to consider what the common denominator is.

In any case, stuff like this:

QuoteOnly coz I have to put up with d---s like you

is not acceptable. If you are finding posts hard to put up with, might I suggest you log off and take a break, lest a more permanent one be reimposed upon you. Consider this your last reminder.

The idea this guy needs to be handled with kids gloves is ridiculous. I actually logged in for first time in years to send a mods a message about him, he clearly needs help.

And then he calls me a dick. He is a toxic personality who needs to be dealt with by banning forever.

I heard he has a degree in guitar though.
