Went with DT12, but it just barely edges out SC for my least favorite DT album.

In terms of musical arrangement, presentation and vocals TA is pretty awesome but to my personal liking it's my least favourite.

SwedishGoose

Systematic Chaos... but Black Clouds & Silver Linings is not much better.

SC pretty easily

This. Never before or since on a DT albums the heaviest songs were the ones that let me down the most. I don't "hate" the album, it's no St. Anger or Risk or Virtual XI, it's still Dream Theater, but out of seven songs, I find myself liking the easiest one (Forsaken) the most and having made sensible edits to other two (the longest ones) to digest them better and scrap the (to me, of course) pointless solo sections.

Kotowboy

Systematic Chaos for me easily too.

Not "BAD" but it drags too often.  In The Presence Of Enemies Part II doesn't live up to Part I. The Ministry Of Lost Souls is far too long for how many sections and ideas it has...

I love The Dark Eternal Night coz it's so wacky and Repentance is also too long for how many ideas it has.

In terms of ratio of music I listen to and music I don't, The Astonishing.

Hmm but with 34 tracks that kinda would be the same for everyone ?

If you took the 8 absolute best songs from The Astonishing - that would be an incredible album.

I voted SC, but this album still has a saving grace: John Myung.

krands85

Black Clouds & Silver Linings.

TCOT is great and ANTR is good, but the rest is pretty forgettable to me. Outwith the 'top tier' songs on each of the other albums, there are also plenty of decent 'second tier' songs too - eg. Constant Motion or The Bigger Picture.

I don't feel that with BC&SL. It could have done with some serious trimming and the time that saved being used on another track or two. Of course, there'd be no guarantee that any additional tracks would have been any good anyway.
Whoaaaahh, ohhh, ohhhhh. Whoaaaahh, ohhhhh, ohhhhhh. Waaah, ahhh, haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaowwwwww

TheCountOfNYC

Systematic Chaos. It's good but a bit bloated and exhausting to get through.

I don't remember if I did this in the best RR albums thread, but this is how they stack up for me.

1: The Astonishing
2: A Dramatic Turn of Events
3: Black Clouds & Silver Linings
4: Dream Theater
5: Systematic Chaos

I don't think Ministry has too much going on. Verse, bridge, chorus (x2), post-chorus, a random solo section which feels to me conjured up in LTE mode and copied and pasted into the song, and the final bridge / chorus and outro. Feels like a standard song brought over the 10+ minute mark by the solo section.

Black Clouds & Silver Linings.

While it still has some great moments (TCOT), the album as a whole is very weird, out of place and sounds like they didn't have a very well defined idea of what kind of album they wanted to create. They went too far with the heavy/dark elements for the sake of it. Also, ROOOOAAAAAAAAAARRRRGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Kotowboy

So - these two polls have shown that most people's favourite :soon: album is A Dramatic Turn Of Events with The Astonishing in second place despite the protestations.

Dream Theater third, with Black Clouds then Systematic Chaos finishing at the bottom.

mikeyd23

It's interesting how TA is currently in second for favorite RR record while also being in second for least favorite.

Kotowboy

I'm probably way off but i'm guessing that some people voted it for worst just to prove a point.

cramx3

To prove they don't like it?

I'm not surprised. TA seems to be either a love it or hate it album.

Kotowboy

I'm just glad they did something out of left field instead of the relatively safe two previous albums.

I'd be A-Ok with a couple more DT by numbers albums if every third album was a bit of a departure.

cramx3

Id be fine with it too, I loved TA.  I mean I voted ADTOE to be better because I like that album more, but I'd take some more risks from DT.  Sadly, I'm not sure how much more risks they are willing to take.

That's kinda what I was getting at, that seemed to be the opinion of the forum since it was released. These polls show that I guess.

gzarruk

If the next album is a full collaborative effort by the 5 members (which would mean much more input from Myung, Mangini and LaBrie) the album will end up being something new, fresh, and, probably, unexpected

Dublagent66

This is one instance where TA easily gets my vote.  DT isn't far behind it.

Systematic Snoozefest

I'm pretty sure TA has more lullabies than SC.  :rollin
