How would you react if DT played Raw Dog as the encore in their upcoming tour?

I'd imagine it would be a good live sob but also agree that I wouldn't expect it to form a similar reaction to TSF live.

Enigmachine

I wouldn't mind because I like the song. It wont make a ton of sense being played though for obvious reasons (including its obscurity making it an anticlimax, its poor reception among probably a few more reasons).

I honestly don't see why the song gets such a negative reaction, though I like Enigma Machine as well so I guess I'm crazy.

Raw Dog is basically a listenable version of Enigma Machine to me, and since I got through that during the Along for a Ride tour, I'd be okay with Raw Dog as well. :metardica:

Quote from: Setlist Scotty on December 27, 2015, 03:13:19 PMThe same kinda crap people spew about RD now is the exact same kinda thing that was said about TSF for the longest time. Until it was played live. Then it was amazing to see how so many fans were all of the sudden impressed with it. So while plenty of people hate the song now, I'd bet that the general opinion of the song would change after hearing it live in the same way that it did for TSF.

I disagree, Scott.  Yes, some of the criticism is similar.  But a key distinction is that there were a LOT of people who liked TSF from the getgo and felt that the criticism of the song from those who did not like it was not justified.  While it is true that a number of people changed their tune after the song was played live, I think a lot of it was people coming around and realizing after seeing it live that it really worked well in a live setting and that the live energy of the song caused those who were put off by it being a "reprise-fest" were sort of forced to evaluate the song on its own merits and realizing that there is a lot to like.

I honestly don't think the same thing applies to Raw Dog.  Sure, it might also have a certain energy to it in a live setting that might take it up a notch or two in a lot of people's eyes.  But at the end of the day, I don't think there is nearly as much going on in that song beneath the surface that would cause people to reevaluate and like it.  I could be wrong, but I just don't hear it.

Now we're probably getting into pure subjectivity, but I don't have such a bad feeling about Raw Dog being performed live. I can imagine much more live energy coming from that than from Enigma Machine, for example. But yeah, I get what you mean.

Perhaps there's more people that did like TSF before they played it live, but my memories of people's comment, especially on DTF were almost always negative. And maybe you have a point that there's not as much happening in RD as there is in TSF, altho I think that was one of the complaints about TSF - that there was too much going on.

Anyway, I'm actually pleasantly surprised to see as many people post in this thread that they actually like the song - I thought there'd be more negative responses than there have been.
Quote from: BlobVanDam on November 13, 2015, 07:37:14 PMAs a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

TAC

I've always liked it, and in fact, have always preferred it to Enigma Machine. When DT12 came out, I was asking the question why so many people like EM, but were so quick to slag RD?
Quote from: wkiml on June 08, 2012, 09:06:35 AMwould have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Quote from: Stadler on February 08, 2025, 12:49:43 PMI wouldn't argue this.

I also always liked TSF, but it did come across even better live IMHO.

But Raw Dog is just awful.

I don't know if I understand well, but if they only play Raw Dog as the encore then we wouldn't get James... I wouldn't like it

now if they do play Raw dog + metropolis or a good solid song (for all the fans) with James on it, then I do would like it.

I am surprised as well.  That, and so many people slagging Enigma Machine.  It's like reality turned upside down in this thread.  :lol

hefdaddy42

I have also noticed people not liking Enigma Machine.  I like it quite a bit.

I do as well.  In fact, in the unlikely event DT were to do another "instrumedley" as discussed in the other thread, I personally would think it would be cool to weave it around Enigma Machine just as they did with TDOE for the original.

The structure is perfect for it, too. DT could play all up to just before the big drum fill, insert a few instrumental sections, then play the rest of EM.

Cool Chris

DT's most hyped and anticipated album in many years drops in less than a month.... the top thread on the DT-subforum on dtf.org is about Raw Dog

Maybe the grass is greener on the other side because you're not over there fucking it up.

:lol

To be fair, there isn't a lot to talk about in regards to the new album at the moment. No new interviews or songs, just pictures of characters which don't really reveal anything more than we already knew or assumed and some map pieces which reveal precisely nothing of any real relevence to anyone who hasn't got an advance copy of the album.

Oh yeah, and I do not get all the Enigma Machine bashing. I mean, everyone's entitled to their own taste etc., but it's surprising to me because it might be my favourite off of DT12. There's just this happiness about it that gets me everytime.

Everyone knows the encore for the 2016 tour will be:
Barfbag
Gotta play some classics after all that new stuff!
I actually really like Barfbag, so I'd have no problem if they played it (or any of the other instrumental pieces from that time period).
Maybe they should end the show with the Anti-procrastination Song. That'd really confuse people!

Rodni Demental

It's hard to say but I've probably listened to Raw Dog about once a year (maybe twice sometimes  :rollin) since it came out. At first I was like meh, but I was always willing to relisten at some point to examine it further, I've been surprised by certain DT songs that I didn't like growing on me in the past. One day, I must have been in the right mood and  :metal

Now it's in my BC&SL playlist. I mean, when I listen to that album I include the covers so it's already 12 tracks, might as well chuck in a 13th one. Seems to fit with that album so I leave it there.  :xbones

I'm not gonna pretend I think it's amazing, but I actually do find parts of it quite interesting and even unique for DT so I certainly wouldn't mind if it was played live. While we're comparing it to EM, I actually felt similarly to RD, in that it was one of the slowest songs to grow on me on the new album. I guess I just found it a bit abrasive and unpredictable but once I listened more the rhythms sort of clicked into place and I could enjoy the song.
