The Hairy Man

There is a section in Trial of Tears - The Wasteland, I think - that always reminds me of While My Guitar Gently Weeps by The Beatles.  :tdwn

Quote from: KevShmev on August 18, 2015, 07:35:23 PMThe heavy riff near the end of Peruvian Skies sounds like Enter Sandman.

After I'd heard the Once In A Livetime version I just couldn't unhear Enter Sandman during the outro ffs.

Yeah, I'm sure you're talking about this:

"I look at you all, see the love..." =

"Still awake, bringing change..." and

"A silent prayer, thrown away..."

The Hairy Man

That's exactly it! You can almost listen to it and sing the 'While my guitar gently weeeeps' line perfectly!

JP's solo in These Walls reminds me of Wrapped Around Your Finger by The Police.

The outro of Innocence Faded reminds me of the "Wind, in my hair" part of Red Barchetta.

I've noticed more, but this is all I can think of right now.

ToT-147

Yes about the first one..

I'm not sure about the second.. But what I do know is that Haken got "inspired" on the IF's part in their 'Eternal Rain', right at 2:56..

I recently discovered another one ... but maybe it's been mentioned here somewhere:

Does the part at 5:55 in Endless Sacrifice remind anyone else of King Crimson's Larks' Tongues in Aspic Part 2?

SebastianPratesi

The intro/outro of "Lifting Shadows Off A Dream" remind me a lot of The Cure - particularly the songs:

"Sinking" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6mzdZXok5U)
"A Thousand Hours" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BBM9Sjp7tpk)
"To Wish Impossible Things" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9AG1De6WDk)

DarkLord_Lalinc

Bridges in the Sky - The Landing from Final Fantasy VIII.

Great Debate (2:43) reminds me of Rush "Natural Science" (2:21).

I always felt Tool on a few guitar riffs on this song.

Yep definitely Tool during the taking life to save life part. 46&2

DT constantly remind me of other music, even actual songs or specific melodies, guitar solos etc. I love DT, don't shoot me, but to be really honest they are not the most original of bands.

What bands are?..

Btw, if you're gonna take the expression literal, like "original music= melodies/harmonies no other human being has ever known, played or recorded", then I think there's no such thing as "original music" or "original bands"..

But anyway, to bring "The Astonishing" to this thread, the rhythmics part of My Last Farewell's verses (1:03 and then again at 3:21) are not THE SAME as in Surrender to Reason at 1:36?!....

They're just the same, lol..

Me acabo de poner a escuchar tu banda. ¡Buenísimo que canten en castellano! ¿De dónde son? Lamentablemente no creo que viaje mucho este año, pero en una de esas más adelante tengo la suerte de verlos en vivo.

Well, yeah, except this one is in 5/4, while both of DT vary between that and 6/4s.. But yeah, they're very similar..

:metal

OK - challenge accepted! :)

The keyboards in Blind Faith (6:34 onwards) has always reminded me of the Super Nintendo game "Secret of Mana". I can't say which track exactly, but the game OST has that similar sound.

They sound absolutely nothing alike in any way, but when I hear Petrucci's melody solos in These Walls, I think of The Police's Wrapped Around Your Finger.  Must just be a somewhat similar atmosphere, because as I said, nothing at all alike.

I can hear a similarity.  Both have a voice/choir patch over a more staccato pattern underneath.  Similar feel despite not sharing keys or time signatures.

I always thought the beginning of the solo from Untethered Angel sounded like the beginning of the solo in Tremonti's Another Heart.

There's a section on 2285 Entr'acte that always reminds me of a Disney soundtrack, but that's not surprising or controversial to anyone here :D

The "Blackened is the end..." Metallica vocal part of This Dying Soul feels pretty obvious.

cminor

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned here before. Found it on reddit a few weeks ago.

A chord progression (and the following guitar solo) in a song by the Austrian symphonic metal band Edenbridge sounds pretty similar to a part of a song by DT we all know pretty well.

Link (with timestamp): https://youtu.be/yh25ZHb4F2c&t=28s

EDIT: Obviously it's more something like "this song reminds me of a Dream Theater song" in this case.

I remember people discussing that on the Portnoy forum the day that album came out. It didn't even take 24 hours for us to notice that  :lol

What's the DT song?  I didn't notice anything in particular (obviously "big and epic" song is similar to a lot of "big and epic" sections in DT songs).

So I guess while listening you didn't really feel the joy in life?  ;)

I wanna mention as the guitar solo continues it also has some sort of Losing Time / Grand Finale feelings.

I heard a bit of both, and also some The Spirit Carries On as well.

Although, I did enjoy how grandiose that finale was. Nothing wrong with utilizing some of these amazing epic chord progressions. I love the way DT uses them, and I do not mind at all when other bands do the same.

Not to mention the Dave Mustaine part right after it.

EPIC Outro

About ten or fifteen years ago I heard a song on the radio I felt sounded EXACTLY like a big riff from A Change of Seasons. But I had no idea what that song was and couldn't find it afterward.

Cut to today. I'm at the gym and Comedown by Bush plays on the radio. That's the one, finally!

I think the similarity is uncanny.
