Let's have a little fun here...
There a certain DT songs that put me in mind of other bands or artists, even other SONGS.
I'll give a few examples to start us out, and hope to see LOTS of others on here...
-Surrounded makes me think of more "pop"-sounding prog bands such as Styx and Asia
-6:00, to me is kind of Deep Purple Style. Actually makes me think of "Space Trucking" for some reason.
-A Change of Seasons, the way I hear it, is like a much heavier version of Yes's "Close to the Edge."
-Wait For Sleep, The Silent Man, Hollow Years and some of their other ballads are like some of ELP's songs, such as "lucky Man" and "From the Beginning."
-Trial of Tears and Repentance make think of Kansas. Repentance seems very similar to "On the Other Side." And ToT reminds me a bit of "Carry On Wayward Son."
-The Count of Tuscany and Enigma Machine are two really good examples of their Rush influence.
...you get the idea, so let's HEAR some!
-
This could be a long thread... :lol :lol
The beginning of Surrounded sounds like Queen's Father to Son.
The heavy riff near the end of Peruvian Skies sounds like Enter Sandman.
JLB's hushed vocals during the first verse of The Spirit Carries On are very Roger Waters-esque circa The Wall.
The Looking Glass riff sounds like the riff from Rush's Limelight bent into a pretzel. :lol
The Best of Times piano intro sounds very much like Elton John's Funeral for a Friend, and the guitar part that comes in around 2:50-ish is very The Spirit of Radio-ish (Rush again).
Octavarium has about 39 parts that sound like other bands. :lol :lol
The intro to Trial of Tears sounds like a combination of Rush's Xanadu (some of the drum fills are nearly identical to those in Xanadu) and Styx's Mr. Roboto (the keys).
The intro to Endless Sacrifice sounds very Welcome Home (Sanitarium)-esque.
The list goes on.
-
Creeping Constant Motion sounds vaguely like Metallica.
-
The intro to Endless Sacrifice sounds very Welcome Home (Sanitarium)-esque.
I had to read that sentence like four times because, although I agree, I was certain you were going to say it sounds like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJ7qXHjxj_0 :lol
-
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJ7qXHjxj_0 sounds like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikSPzB-I_W4

I figured I'd let someone else throw that one out. :P
-
Lost Not Forgotten reminds me of Under A Glass Moon.
It makes me stop listening to it and put on Under A Glass Moon instead.
Because why would you listen to a bad retread of a good song, when you can listen to the good song instead?
-
I say this all the time, and almost no one believes me, but the beginning of Peruvian Skies pretty much IS the beginning of Bleeding Me by Metallica. Everyone wants to make the Have a Cigar comparison, and it is there, but the similarity to Bleeding Me is perhaps even more striking.
-

I can see where you are coming from, it's faster but similar notes and same guitar tone too which helps. I wouldn't say it's the same but can see the similarities.
This Dying Soul and Noose by Ark are very reminiscent of each other.
-
The rhythm in The Pursuit if Truth reminds me of Conversation Piece by Savatage.
-
The end of The Dance of Eternity sounds like Rush's Freewill.
-
And Trial of Tears is Xanadu. Espevially the BTFW version.
-
Forsaken is Evanescense.
Ilumination Theory is Tchaikovsky piano concierto n1
-
A few parts of Learning to Live remind me of Heart of the Sunrise by Yes.
-
The Surrounded intro is IDENTICAL, I mean absolutely IDENTICAL to Symphony X's Through The Looking Glass intro!
-
The beginning of The Glass Prison sounds a lot like the end of Dream Theater's Finally Free.
:neverusethis:
-
I really hope you meant The Shattered Fortress, otherwise, I have some bad news for you.
EDIT: Nevermind, stupid me
-
The guitar part of The Killing Hand when the vocals first come in reminds me of the opening story part of the NES game Blaster Master.
Similarly, Goodnight Kiss reminds me of the opening to Ocarina of Time.
-
Similarly, Goodnight Kiss reminds me of the opening to Ocarina of Time.
I'd never heard that one before, but I can see a bit of similarity. The Overture has always reminded me of Ocarina of Time, so I like this comparison.
-
Enigma Machine's main riff sounds like the Inspector Gadget theme song.
-
The Surrounded intro is IDENTICAL, I mean absolutely IDENTICAL to Symphony X's Through The Looking Glass intro!
Since it came out 6 years later, wouldn't the Symphony X song be "IDENTICAL, I mean absolutely IDENTICAL" to Surrounded?
On that note, though, I always thought the second half of "Learning To Live" was very Rush-like, though I can't place a specific song.
"Take The Time" has a part that sounds exactly like "Dancin' Fool" by Zappa.
-
Solitary Shell/Solsbury Hill
-
Lost Not Forgotten reminds me of Under A Glass Moon.
It makes me stop listening to it and put on Under A Glass Moon instead.
Because why would you listen to a bad retread of a good song, when you can listen to the good song instead?
Maybe some people PREFER Lost Not Forgotten ?
-
Which is the riff that sounds like a Michael Jackson song ?
I *think* It's Give In To Me but I forgot.
Edit : haha it's definitely Endless Sacrifice :lol
-
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJ7qXHjxj_0 sounds like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikSPzB-I_W4
Ninja'd :P :P
-
Bridges in the Sky (7:15) reminds me of Final Fantasy 8 "The Landing" AKA Dollet Theme invasion (0:51).
-

You can make your POSTS as long as you want to.
-I think the musical references to Pink Floyd and Metallica in Peruvian skies was intentional. It also reminds me a little of some of the early Black Sabbath songs, such as "Iron man" and "War Pigs."
-A LOT of people have said that The Looking Glass sounds like Rush's "Limelight." I don't seem to hear it as much as other people do. But it does have a vaguely Rush "vibe" to it.
-I think Octavarium was intentionally a tribute to a lot of British prog bands, such as Pink Floyd, Yes, and especially Genesis.
-I also think that Trial of Tears, especially at the beginning (intro) was strongly inspired by Rush's "Hemispheres."
-

I don't know about "prefer," but I like both songs, and I DON'T think that LNF is a "bad retread" of UaGM; I think they are two entirely DIFFERENT songs.
-
I agree with you, chaossystem. I like UAGM better, but I like LNF too, and though there are some striking similarities in song structure, I don't see LNF as a retread.
-
Forsaken is Evanescense.
While I agree that Forsaken does sound like Evanescense, when I first heard the song, I actually thought it sounded kinda like a combination of Dio-era Sabbath meets latter-day Savatage!
Besides all the obvious ones that have already been listed, I always associated Hollow Years with Sting, Just Let Me Breathe with Wait for Sleep, the guitar riff at 2:14 of Behind the Veil being Countdown to Extinction-era Megadeth.
Some other ones that don't sound reminiscent of other songs, but that I always associate together would be PMU - Tom Sawyer, Ytsejam - YYZ and Learning to Live - Natural Science. I guess it makes sense since Rush is a close second favorite behind DT, and in the case of LtL-NS, both are my all-time favorite songs by both bands.
-
Just Let Me Breathe with Wait for Sleep
I always likened it to a thicker 6:00
-
The very beginning of Misunderstood has always reminded me of the very beginning of Led Zeppelin's Ten Years Gone.
-
I was hoping for more comparisons to "classic rock" (pre-1990, or at least pre I&W) songs.
Anyway, what I'm also talking about is the "vibe" or theme, or lyrical content of a lot of the band's songs.
An example of that is that it recently occurred to me that a lot of ADToE seems to have been inspired by Yes.
More specifically, the lyrical content of BitS and BAA are both very much like what Yes does, or at least used to do, when Jon Anderson was writing a lot of the lyrics.
-
Forsaken is Evanescense.
It is also Cold by Static-X
I'll add...The Mirror, and Pantera - Domination.
-
The very beginning of Misunderstood has always reminded me of the very beginning of Led Zeppelin's Ten Years Gone.
Totally. It's not the same thing, but the vibe is very similar.
Just like the beginning of Peruvian Skies having that Bleeding Me-vibe.
-

I never equated the two, but I can definitely see that.
-
After the intro, on the very first listen I thought:
Enigma Machine is the modern day Inspector Gadget.
-
I could be wrong about this, but I was listening to the radio and a Rush song came on that sounded nearly identical to the intro of Home. I don't know the entirety of Rush's discography, so I've no idea what it's called. Anyone happen to know the name of it, if such a song exists?
-
The only other song I think of during Home's intro is Forty Six and 2 by Tool (and I am not even much of a Tool fan).
-
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fo1bS-C9eUM pretty much lifts the TGD key intro (which, as DT bits go, is a strange thing to lift).
-

I already posted that ;D but I'm glad I'm not the only one.
-

I had to read that sentence like four times because, although I agree, I was certain you were going to say it sounds like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJ7qXHjxj_0 :lol
It's note-for-note at one point.
-
An example of that is that it recently occurred to me that a lot of ADToE seems to have been inspired by Yes.
???
Yeah, Home is definitely Tool - 46 & 2.
-
Solitary Shell/Solsbury Hill
They even plagiarised the first and last two letters. Shameful.
-

Spindrift? It's the closest song I can think of, and still quite far-fetched.
I Walk Beside You and To Live Forever have some U2-like vibe in them.
-

The only Rush song that came to my mind was The Main Monkey Business, but instrumentals rarely get airplay, so it's got to be something else.
-
The Main Monkey Business reminds me of Black Sabbath's A National Acrobat.

Don't forget The Way It Used to Be and Speak to Me.
-
But what if we really WANT to forget them?
-
I've been listening to U2 since 1983 and Dream Theater since 1993, and I don't think I've ever listened to a DT song and thought, "this sounds like U2." EVER. That includes I Walk Beside You.
-
Great Debate (2:43) reminds me of Rush "Natural Science" (2:21).
-
Great Debate (2:43) reminds me of Rush "Natural Science" (2:21).
I always felt Tool on a few guitar riffs on this song.

I agree, The Great Debate has a Tool feel.
It's just not as good as most Tool songs.

TGD is better than any of the drab generic metal Tool has ever written.

I have nothing against them, I just find their music generic and dull. It's what metal sounds like when you remove anything distinctive or interesting.
-
We're going to have to agree to disagree. Because it seems like you are describing some other band than Tool, so I don't even see any common ground. And it would be too much effort.
Carry on.

Works for me.

???
I think he means lyrically? Some of the lyrics to Bridges In the Sky and Breaking All Illusions have a similar usage of fantastical nature/geologic imagery. The title and lyric "Bridges In the Sky" reminds me somewhat of the sort of fantastical things Roger Dean has painted that have been used as Yes artwork, namely the floating islands.
At least that's what chaossytem seems to mean by the overall context of the post you quoted that line from:

Aside from the lyrics, of course, there's no more Yes influence on ADTOE than the very limited amount that there is on every DT album.
-
one of the ADTOE long song's noodle sections has a part that sounds very similar to a part in Haken's Pareidolia
i'll investigate further tomorrow, it's late
EDIT: there's a part like 8 minutes in to Trial of Tears that sounds like Immigrant Song by Led Zeppelin
-
I have nothing against them, I just find their music generic and dull. It's what metal sounds like when you remove anything distinctive or interesting.
ÆNIMA and Undertow are a bit dull with a few highlights but Lateralus is a masterpiece for me.
And The Great Debate is way more fun to listen to yes.

Beside the obvious choices (As I am / Metallica, The looking glass / Rush) I would say that Disappear reminds me of Portishead.
-
I'll try to stay away from the Rush/Metallica/Pink Floyd comparisons - only because they are such big influences on the band that it's pretty easy to hear them throughout the discography.
Here area couple that jumped out:
Never Enough - Stockholm Syndrome by Muse
Prophets of War - also very muse-like
The Bigger Picture has an Evanescence feel to it...particularly the second verse - though not as obvious as forsaken.
Jordan Rudess definitely channels his inner Keith Emerson for the Moog solo in Octavarium (but everyone Moog solo since the 70's reminds me of Keith Emerson)

Fun vids.. I've made a couple like those long time ago, though they weren't only about DT, but also many other bands..
I say this all the time, and almost no one believes me, but the beginning of Peruvian Skies pretty much IS the beginning of Bleeding Me by Metallica.
In fact I'd believe that.. That's the first comparison I've made in these videos.. (The video also shows similar solos of Rata Blanca/Pink Floyd and Wither/Bohemian Rhapsody..)
https://goo.gl/IEIHHh
Since I'm on it.. This one has at the beginning one that I'm surprised no one has mentioned yet: The Glass Prison and In My Darkest Hour from Megadeth..
https://goo.gl/DFS0xA
And, finally, this one has mostly DT/Symphony X's comparisons, where, this time, the DT songs precede the other band's..

One I discovered recently: Part of the main keyboard theme in Lifting Shadows Off a Dream (first heard 35 seconds in) reminds me of the main keyboard riff to Love Will Tear Us Apart by Joy Division, both is terms of melody and instrument tone. Not exactly a typical Dream Theater influence, but given the overall mood and tone of Space-Dye Vest, I wouldn't be surprised that Kevin Moore was listening to some Joy Division at the time.
On a more abstract level, Learning to Live reminds me of Heart of the Sunrise for some reason. There's nothing musically that sounds alike, but the songs have a similar lengths and both serve at their respective albums closing epics, and both songs contrast quiet, contemplative vocal sections with sections of aggressive prog instrumentation. There's also some similarity in the imagery used in the lyrics: i.e. "Listening to the city, whispering its violence, I set out watching from above" & "I get lost in the city", and both songs have an overall "warm" vibe to them. For all these reasons I mentally connect the two songs. In fact, you could go further and say Images & Words is DT's version of Fragile, with Pull Me Under as their Roundabout (an 8-minute album opener that's still prog but was catchy and mainstream sounding enough to be edited for radio airplay, and became a hit single).
-

Yes, in fact both are in the same scale (B minor) and do the same combination of notes [F♯ - G - F♯ - E - D - E (LSOaD) / B (LWTUA)]..
And now writing those acronyms I realize two more coincidences: both start with "L", and both have five words.. ;D
-
So, using the information in the above post, I made a quick rough sketch comparing the two parts:
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/3d6odaAIhRVowmqvxDlFs9QxCJXtfDTbJc6L9JUbFRFsNZ82PDtjKyirsGtnwczktf6JCitrNp2I72ZKiee57nDmUHS-0qiI6lvKDWx2rv3dd_mYEzF1nZdJBpX0k8F1Ezxm84lKpX4aMG8BsRHJGXxjRPkZEMQqTJ61HCxGjieF9giZ5vhqUQ2Ea2ZHYVDZ3epgsqBjJs98yS1no9473IiDqohA-cVIo4N-gGtk0GNNqEQ8RGAhh_gVccRWNV1Ns9uWIsjvTajDPk8MMVaD_e9niGDSu4_OlfrFFABa86RWkYCGs8TNv0NkiLP93Ensa-c2X3ddyeBzz3RGAgTuepb8Nol5SYosk0sQEGbZ0_aEoNlVmHERS7dlkq0it0LuZ1pcMPaQtK-M6cgR0qvk3ClgAI9sPKPGs-EXJp3l3BtDPWlLc_wuiyaDjLJeJjmzCP4xVsVQD8VjfUc3BX67dFBJeXVgpC2ASvlNr3YyB694ByRAeU4IC3BJS23lcV48yuFyLamtA8d5SZbuJ2pmLg=w799-h599-no)
I filled out the Joy Division part from an online sheet music sample, and the Dream Theater part by my own estimation playing around on the piano (the only sheet music samples I could find for that song were for guitar, not keyboard). I'm an amateur at music theory, so excuse any obvious notation mistakes I made.
-
There is a section in Trial of Tears - The Wasteland, I think - that always reminds me of While My Guitar Gently Weeps by The Beatles. :tdwn
The heavy riff near the end of Peruvian Skies sounds like Enter Sandman.
After I'd heard the Once In A Livetime version I just couldn't unhear Enter Sandman during the outro ffs.
-
There is a section in Trial of Tears - The Wasteland, I think - that always reminds me of While My Guitar Gently Weeps by The Beatles. :tdwn
Yeah, I'm sure you're talking about this:
"I look at you all, see the love..." =
"Still awake, bringing change..." and
"A silent prayer, thrown away..."
-
That's exactly it! You can almost listen to it and sing the 'While my guitar gently weeeeps' line perfectly!
-
JP's solo in These Walls reminds me of Wrapped Around Your Finger by The Police.
The outro of Innocence Faded reminds me of the "Wind, in my hair" part of Red Barchetta.
I've noticed more, but this is all I can think of right now.
-
Yes about the first one..
I'm not sure about the second.. But what I do know is that Haken got "inspired" on the IF's part in their 'Eternal Rain', right at 2:56..
-
I recently discovered another one ... but maybe it's been mentioned here somewhere:
Does the part at 5:55 in Endless Sacrifice remind anyone else of King Crimson's Larks' Tongues in Aspic Part 2?
-
The intro/outro of "Lifting Shadows Off A Dream" remind me a lot of The Cure - particularly the songs:
"Sinking" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6mzdZXok5U (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6mzdZXok5U))
"A Thousand Hours" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BBM9Sjp7tpk (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BBM9Sjp7tpk))
"To Wish Impossible Things" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9AG1De6WDk (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9AG1De6WDk))
-
Bridges in the Sky - The Landing from Final Fantasy VIII.
-
Great Debate (2:43) reminds me of Rush "Natural Science" (2:21).
I always felt Tool on a few guitar riffs on this song.
Yep definitely Tool during the taking life to save life part. 46&2
-
DT constantly remind me of other music, even actual songs or specific melodies, guitar solos etc. I love DT, don't shoot me, but to be really honest they are not the most original of bands.
-

What bands are?..
Btw, if you're gonna take the expression literal, like "original music= melodies/harmonies no other human being has ever known, played or recorded", then I think there's no such thing as "original music" or "original bands"..
But anyway, to bring "The Astonishing" to this thread, the rhythmics part of My Last Farewell's verses (1:03 and then again at 3:21) are not THE SAME as in Surrender to Reason at 1:36?!....
They're just the same, lol..

Gracias!.. Somos de Buenos Aires, San Miguel.. Por ahora estamos por sacar un nuevo videoclip, y estamos alejados de los escenarios.. Pero ni bien tengamos fecha te lo hago saber por MP.. :tup

The keyboards in Blind Faith (6:34 onwards) has always reminded me of the Super Nintendo game "Secret of Mana". I can't say which track exactly, but the game OST has that similar sound.

They sound absolutely nothing alike in any way, but when I hear Petrucci's melody solos in These Walls, I think of The Police's Wrapped Around Your Finger. Must just be a somewhat similar atmosphere, because as I said, nothing at all alike.

I can hear a similarity. Both have a voice/choir patch over a more staccato pattern underneath. Similar feel despite not sharing keys or time signatures.

I always thought the beginning of the solo from Untethered Angel sounded like the beginning of the solo in Tremonti's Another Heart.

There's a section on 2285 Entr'acte that always reminds me of a Disney soundtrack, but that's not surprising or controversial to anyone here :D

The “Blackened is the end…” Metallica vocal part of This Dying Soul feels pretty obvious.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned here before. Found it on reddit a few weeks ago.
A chord progression (and the following guitar solo) in a song by the Austrian symphonic metal band Edenbridge sounds pretty similar to a part of a song by DT we all know pretty well.

EDIT: Obviously it's more something like "this song reminds me of a Dream Theater song" in this case.

I remember people discussing that on the Portnoy forum the day that album came out. It didn’t even take 24 hours for us to notice that :lol

What's the DT song? I didn't notice anything in particular (obviously "big and epic" song is similar to a lot of "big and epic" sections in DT songs).

So I guess while listening you didn't really feel the joy in life? ;)
I wanna mention as the guitar solo continues it also has some sort of Losing Time / Grand Finale feelings.

I heard a bit of both, and also some The Spirit Carries On as well.
Although, I did enjoy how grandiose that finale was. Nothing wrong with utilizing some of these amazing epic chord progressions. I love the way DT uses them, and I do not mind at all when other bands do the same.

I remember reaction to the song as well. It was so obvious that seemingly everyone was talking about it online (at dt.net and mp.com) the day Train of Thought was released.

Not to mention the Dave Mustaine part right after it.

About ten or fifteen years ago I heard a song on the radio I felt sounded EXACTLY like a big riff from A Change of Seasons. But I had no idea what that song was and couldn't find it afterward.
Cut to today. I'm at the gym and Comedown by Bush plays on the radio. That's the one, finally!
I think the similarity is uncanny.
