Fine, maybe dark wasn't quite the right word but even still, I'm not sure I like what I see there. It just seems he's going a bit too far with it.

Kotowboy

Not at all. it's two obvious buddies having a laugh with each other.

JLB and Eric Disrude have always had a fluctuating relationship, as demonstrated when they came to Long Island in 2012.

Sidenote: Pretty cool that the drum tech stayed with DT. I kind of  thought that the muscians hired their own tech or something like that and when that certain member left so did the tech. I don't know why but I just thought that was the case.

You are almost certainly the only one who feels that way.

CaelPetrucci, I take it you don't have many friends with deadpan humor.

I was thinking that too.

I think MP's current drum tech Jose was also his drum tech before Eric Disrude.  I don't know if Eric stayed on because he got more money or if Mike just decided to bring Jose back anyway but you're right, it is interesting.

Drum techs don't just work for one band though.  Even this Jose guy was working for some famous country act (I think) in between MP gigs.  Can anybody elaborate or confirm?

I can confirm that if you want to be a drum tech, you should be open to a lot of styles.

I can confirm that if you want to be a drum tech, you should be open to a lot of styles.

And you want to continue to work since bands take time off.  This is a regular practice.

Yeah, they aren't on retainer.  They get paid when they work, which is mostly on tour.

Instrument techs usually have their schedule planned out for a whole year.  Tour with band X, studio with band Y, tour with band Z, etc.

Or just humor. :lol

Go ahead, mock me. I know I'm alone in this one,but this doesn't go with my sense of humour, I feel it's a bit too far. Can everyone just stop bashing against my comments now please?

King Postwhore

You need to lighten up.  We're all friends here and we have a good time ribbing each other.  I'm notorious for misspelling everything.  We are not mean here.

Sorry kingshmegland. Going through a bit of a rough time with my main group of friends at the moment and when you said I don't have many friends with a deadpan humour it kinda upset me a bit because of what's going on offline. I'm gonna take a few of these  :chill  :chill  and come back more like this  ;D

I wonder if MP's techs (Eric, Jose... whoever) received a bonus in pay for memorizing when they needed to turn Mike's mic over for Mike to Mike into the Mic

And I bet they were all prog, because any other band would know better. :P

Kotowboy

I think at least one of them is a shitty pop outfit like "LMFAO"...

That's not unpronounceable, it's just stupid. If you can't pronounce the letters of the alphabet, you're in trouble. :lol

Yes but I was saying that I think one of the aforementioned acts ( I think !!! ) is in the same vein as LMFAO music wise.

Also it makes it nearly impossible to search for them online :p

Scorpion

My favourite in terms of online searchability are either "The Band" or "The The"

Gotcha. The opening act when I saw Epica was a local metal band named............... Metal. Good luck having anyone search for your band, idiots. :lol

Kotowboy

Yeah do they not want any success or anything ?

I've heard stories of bands who split up once they get popular.  What ?

CaelPetrucci

Some people just aren't in it for the fame. Think of the countless stories you've heard of FII, and how Dream Theater were close to breaking up over having to go commercial, they just weren't enjoying it as much having to be watered down to what people wanted to hear. If you get popular and are then expected to do things a certain way, it gets tedious, and if it's not as satisfying anymore, then you might want to call it quits. I'm a bit of a muso myself, and I can tell you that's probably the way it would end up for me if someone forced me to do things a certain way instead of just letting me make MY music and seeing how it goes!

If memory serves me correctly, MP had Eric as his tech beginning in 2004, and this was because Jose was unavailable (or wasn't teching at that time). As you mentioned, techs do work with other bands, which is what Eric did, and was unavailable when MP needed him in 2009. By this time Jose was available and so got his old gig back again, and has since been MP's tech for most, if not all, of his gigs.

As for how Eric started teching for MM, I haven't a clue, but it could've just been a matter of calling him up since the band no doubt had his number and was already familiar with his abilities/attitude in teching for MP.

Side note: talk about 2 completely different personalities - Jose is a world class jerk to the fans, where as Eric has always been very cool. When I found out that MP had Jose out with him again, I was bummed.
Quote from: BlobVanDam on November 13, 2015, 07:37:14 PMAs a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.
Quote from: TAC on July 10, 2024, 08:26:41 AMPOW is awesome! :P

SystematicThought

I feel bad for saying this, but I think it's mentioned in Lifting Shadows, didn't Jose also kind of enable MP's drug habits back during the Scenes tour? I seem to remember reading that. Like Jose would prepare the lines of cocaine for MP during a song. I may have misread something.
