Kind of a bizarre yet humorous video. I had never seen this before. A few minutes of weird neck-beard chat before the shakedown/strong arming. From the filming of the Chaos in Motion DVD.
-
Yes great video, hidden as a dollar on CiM dvd.Have you found a razor blade/beer :P ?
-
This is actually on the DVD? How do you find these easter eggs? Come to think of it, I think I watched that DVD exactly once.
-
Best easter egg ever (good timing to post about it too :P ). Eric is a funny guy.
-
That was great. :lol
-

Yes, use the arrows :yarr
-
I think the Easter Egg inside the Easter Egg is that we know JP uses/used AOL :lol
-
I miss this kind of funny shit in DT's recent DVDs.
-
I think the Easter Egg inside the Easter Egg is that we know JP uses/used AOL :lol
Still does.
-
That's pretty crazy.
-
I never would have guessed but you really shouldn't fuck around with Jordan Rudess.
-
That was amazing, never knew about this! JLB and JR... :rollin
-
I think the Easter Egg inside the Easter Egg is that we know JP uses/used AOL :lol
Still does.
Somehow that doesn't surprise me :lol
-
I loved this Easter Egg. The other if I remember is Rock Juice.
I love how James evaded and dismissed Eric as well. :lol
-
This video never gets old. It's outstanding!
-
Myung was the funniest.
Reads the contract.
Then pays up.
:rollin
-
Yeah, this is such a funny video. Chaos in motion is such a tremendous DVD, I love all the extras and good stuff. :metal
-
Eric looks a wee bit like Brian Mantia.

"Hey, let me know when you're ready to call your daughter so I can tell her there's no Santa" -JLB
This was dark. This made me feel like James was a bit of a :censored . Really don't like his personality here. But still, he was always a bit of an uptight guy. Starting to see why he was such a great fit in the role of me on The Human Equation by Ayreon.
Come to think of it, any DT fans going to that? Want to see it, but live in Bunbury, Western Australia, so that's not gonna happen! :'(
-
Wtf, how was that dark? That was just excellent banter between buddies.

This exactly. Not sure what you're talking about.

What's not to love about it?! He was ready to completely crush the childhood of a young girl! He was ready to do irreparable damage to the working relationship between him and a drum tech all while refusing to pay him a dollar he was owed so his family would have to cancel christmas!
And what makes it even better is that everyone was in on the joke......
....everyone except for....

There was really nothing dark about that. It's just dry humor between friends.

JLB and Eric Disrude have always had a fluctuating relationship, as demonstrated when they came to Long Island in 2012.

As does my family, including myself, despite being 17.

Just don't plan on having a career in IT. it's usually agreed that an AOL email address means "immediately disqualified" :lol
-
I can totally see the anti-Labrie brigade using that clip in anecdotes about how "he sucks"
":p haha James Labrie. Terrible singer and he famously wouldn't give a member of his crew one measly dollar to help him buy his kid a gift because he wasn't getting paid for the tour but everyone else in the band helped him out. Fuck Labrie ::)"
I've heard anti JL sheep say that Portnoy "was" the band and it was actually James who was "a prick".
::)

I don't use that one or the email in which my username is "ProgMetalMan" for filling out applications.

I had to create a more professional email address when I started sending out resumes a few years ago. I don't think interviewers would have understood what a progsnobdt@yahoo.com was or a KingElessar@gmail.com was.

If some guy assaulted me with a towel I would more than likely tell their kid there was no Santa so I can totally see why James threatened Eric Disrude with that!
-
To be fair, the no Santa threat came 5 years before the towel.
-
People don't just start assaulting people with towels one day. Usually there is a long sordid history of towel assaults.

It's not serious you know.
Come to think of it, I'd probably be exactly like James haha.
-
Fine, maybe dark wasn't quite the right word but even still, I'm not sure I like what I see there. It just seems he's going a bit too far with it.
-
Not at all. it's two obvious buddies having a laugh with each other.

Sidenote: Pretty cool that the drum tech stayed with DT. I kind of thought that the muscians hired their own tech or something like that and when that certain member left so did the tech. I don't know why but I just thought that was the case.

You are almost certainly the only one who feels that way.

CaelPetrucci, I take it you don't have many friends with deadpan humor.

I was thinking that too.

I think MP's current drum tech Jose was also his drum tech before Eric Disrude. I don't know if Eric stayed on because he got more money or if Mike just decided to bring Jose back anyway but you're right, it is interesting.
Drum techs don't just work for one band though. Even this Jose guy was working for some famous country act (I think) in between MP gigs. Can anybody elaborate or confirm?

I can confirm that if you want to be a drum tech, you should be open to a lot of styles.

And you want to continue to work since bands take time off. This is a regular practice.
-
Yeah, they aren't on retainer. They get paid when they work, which is mostly on tour.
Instrument techs usually have their schedule planned out for a whole year. Tour with band X, studio with band Y, tour with band Z, etc.

Eric can tighten a lug in jazz as well as prog !!!!!

Go ahead, mock me. I know I'm alone in this one,but this doesn't go with my sense of humour, I feel it's a bit too far. Can everyone just stop bashing against my comments now please?
-
You need to lighten up. We're all friends here and we have a good time ribbing each other. I'm notorious for misspelling everything. We are not mean here.
-
And i'm actually a barrel of laughs IRL !!!!!!!!!!
( provided I get my god damned coffee ! )
-
Sorry kingshmegland. Going through a bit of a rough time with my main group of friends at the moment and when you said I don't have many friends with a deadpan humour it kinda upset me a bit because of what's going on offline. I'm gonna take a few of these :chill :chill and come back more like this ;D
-
I wonder if MP's techs (Eric, Jose... whoever) received a bonus in pay for memorizing when they needed to turn Mike's mic over for Mike to Mike into the Mic

BAND Z IS ON TOUR?! Holy shit I love those guys!!

Remember when they were band W? What a lineup that was.

I liked them before they were band A.
:coolio

And I bet they were all prog, because any other band would know better. :P

I think at least one of them is a shitty pop outfit like "LMFAO"...
-
That's not unpronounceable, it's just stupid. If you can't pronounce the letters of the alphabet, you're in trouble. :lol

Yes but I was saying that I think one of the aforementioned acts ( I think !!! ) is in the same vein as LMFAO music wise.
Also it makes it nearly impossible to search for them online :p
-
My favourite in terms of online searchability are either "The Band" or "The The"

Gotcha. The opening act when I saw Epica was a local metal band named............... Metal. Good luck having anyone search for your band, idiots. :lol
-
Yeah do they not want any success or anything ?
I've heard stories of bands who split up once they get popular. What ?
-
Some people just aren't in it for the fame. Think of the countless stories you've heard of FII, and how Dream Theater were close to breaking up over having to go commercial, they just weren't enjoying it as much having to be watered down to what people wanted to hear. If you get popular and are then expected to do things a certain way, it gets tedious, and if it's not as satisfying anymore, then you might want to call it quits. I'm a bit of a muso myself, and I can tell you that's probably the way it would end up for me if someone forced me to do things a certain way instead of just letting me make MY music and seeing how it goes!

If memory serves me correctly, MP had Eric as his tech beginning in 2004, and this was because Jose was unavailable (or wasn't teching at that time). As you mentioned, techs do work with other bands, which is what Eric did, and was unavailable when MP needed him in 2009. By this time Jose was available and so got his old gig back again, and has since been MP's tech for most, if not all, of his gigs.
As for how Eric started teching for MM, I haven't a clue, but it could've just been a matter of calling him up since the band no doubt had his number and was already familiar with his abilities/attitude in teching for MP.
Side note: talk about 2 completely different personalities - Jose is a world class jerk to the fans, where as Eric has always been very cool. When I found out that MP had Jose out with him again, I was bummed.
-
I feel bad for saying this, but I think it's mentioned in Lifting Shadows, didn't Jose also kind of enable MP's drug habits back during the Scenes tour? I seem to remember reading that. Like Jose would prepare the lines of cocaine for MP during a song. I may have misread something.

I remember hearing that about Jose from a few different people who met him and were trying to be friendly with the guy. He basically brushed them off with an attitude.

Whoa...crazy. Care to elaborate? Obviously you don't need to give too many details but I honestly don't even know how a drumtech could be in a position to be cool or a jerk to fans.

I don't know if I would call that "enabling." Your boss tells you to do something, you do it. I doubt Jose was like, "C'mon Mike, one more line won't hurt ya!"
-

I think what Snob said sums it up fairly accurately - whenever the fans would try to engage him in conversation, he would always blow them off. This happened to me several times, even if I happen to be at a soundcheck or something else where it was evident that I had a connection to the band. Didn't matter. Now if MP had introduced him to me, perhaps the situation might have been different, but he's always struck me as a jerk, and hearing that other fans have had the same experience is all the verification I need of my opinion of him. Eric OTOH was always kind - maybe didn't always have time to chat, but was pleasant and never gave you the impression that he thought you were scum like Jose did.
Interestingly enough, in chatting with another crew member I've gotten to know over the years, he told me a couple stories about Jose, such as one where his psycho wife was at several shows (maybe even on the road with the band) and was causing all sorts of problems that Jose was told either to send her home or else he himself would get fired. (He sent her home). Granted, that's not him personally, but I still found it to be an interesting story that fills in a few blanks about who he is.
-
Interesting. Thanks for sharing.

Psycho wife coming along on tour is very Spinal Tap :lol
