Mosh

I mostly agree, but I give them credit for trying to not only outdo Octavarium, but outdo it with something completely different. Rather than repeating the same formula again like a lot of bands do (looking at you Neal Morse). The problem is that Octavarium was really the winning formula and I don't see them topping that. But we've gotten some cool epics along the way so it's alright.

Illumination Theory isn't in the same league as Octavarium.

I feel like every Epic they've done since then has been trying to live up to it but failed.
I don't think for a second that every epic since has been trying to live up to it.  In between 8VM and IT were ITPOE and TCOT, neither of which had the lofty ambition in composition that 8VM did; they were essentially just really long songs, nothing out of the ordinary about them.

I think that IT was more along the same lines as what they were attempting with 8VM.  Which you were prefer is obviously up to you, but I think to say that either one "isn't in the same league" as the other is seemingly bizarre.

So if JR is going to be at NAMM on the 22-25th does that mean they won't go into the studio until after that?  I know this is not the first time he's been to NAMM but I don't remember if it conflicted with being in the studio.

I think they were in the studio for SC when JR was at NAMM in early 2007, although he might have finished up the keys by that point, I don't know. I just remember the demo where he mentioned "entering the gothic domain".
I doubt they've entered the studio yet though.

I don't see them entering the studio in secret.  They will announce when they will begin recording.

I think IT is my favourite of the 6 aforementioned 'epics'. It definitely hit me harder than Octavarium which took a lot longer to grow. But then maybe IT will loose interest faster than the others, I dunno. I think it's a standout piece though and absolutely worthy of being part of this group of songs, not just by default but the quality is just as high imo, if not their best yet. :coolio

I hope you are voting in DT The League.  :lol  :metal
