Quote from: Stadler on February 08, 2025, 12:49:43 PMI wouldn't argue this.

I don't see them listed:

John Sykes 2000   :metal
Christopher Guest 2007

Well, all right, that answers my questions then on this matter.

I think if you look at the list of people, DT wouldn't really be appropriate. They give those doctorates to people like Count Basie and John Williams.

How did MP, a college dropout, afford a house at nineteen???
Does the book go into why Mike couldn't move in with Howard (his father), or is that too personal?

Howard lived in California since the time of his divorce from Mike's mom when Mike was pretty young.

Howard Portnoy moved to California after divorcing MP's mother and became a disc jockey. MP's grandmother helped him out a lot through out the years. She helped him find his house and sound proof it so the band could practice in the basement. She also bought him his first drum kit, the four-track recorder the band recorded their demos on, and paid for the first thousand copies of the Majesty demos so the band could campaign themselves. She eventually started helping out with the bands fan mail too. I'm guessing she helped out with the house payments and provided MP food and other essentials he couldn't afford. MP's wife was possibly his girlfriend at the time and lived with him. I forgot to include this in my first post, but Mike also attended another music school called Five Towns in Long Island. So MP was a pretty busy guy juggling 2 jobs, a band and school.

Don't forget.  The 80s, 90s and 00s was a time of $$$ a plenty.  So these crappy jobs probably weren't so crappy back then.

How could anybody that doesn't have rich parents stick with a music career long enough to turn it profitable?   Well, unless you are literally willing to be a bum for a decade.  And the music business model only seems to be getting worse.

I had no idea Mike Portnoy went to Five Towns. I was gonna go there but I decided to go to school closer to home.

Ahhh, now I recall where I thought they may have been offered honorary degrees.  From the massive Breaking the Fourth Wall thread.

True that they did not finish, but DT still cite Berkelee as their school, so it is still positive exposure for the school.  And I may be misremembering, but they may have been offered honorary degrees at some point, so they may actually be considered graduating alums.

Yeah, but no offense to bosk, there is no evidence that this ever happened.
Well, as I said, I may have been misremembering.

Speaking of misremembering...
