Probably TMOLS, but that may change later.  I still feel like several songs on the new album haven't really clicked with me yet, including TBP.

Funny that no one mentioned that both have "water's edge" in the lyrics. I wonder if it was intentional reference given that TBP is a spiritual take on the songwriting process.

Ha I noticed that too :)
I didn't really know what to think of it... To be honest, I think it was probably just a coincidence.

The edge of the water is a recurring theme in Petrucci's lyrics.

TMOLS is probably my least favourite DT song ever, so it's an easy choice for me.

KevShmev

Not even close.

The Ministry of Lost Souls has a great ending, but the first half of the song really drags, and it's work just to get through it.

The Bigger Picture is great from start to finish.

I like how the percentages are the same as the number of voters right now :lol

TBP, because I can actually listen to the song in full and it's not an amateurish mishmash.

Basically this, actually.  TMOLS is a mess.

Sacul

Hard choice, but I'll take TBP because it's on my top 50.

EDIT:  I thought this was TMOLS vs Beneath the Surface.  Voted Ministry.  Wish I could change my vote.  The Bigger Picture is a top 20 or top 15 DT song.

Ministry of Lost Souls, easily. Sure, The Bigger Picture is a pretty good song, but Ministry is just a big, beautiful, sprawling beast. I don't think they're very comparable.

lithium112

Not sure that these songs are similar enough to warrant a comparison. They evoke pretty different moods in my mind.

From an unrelated comparison standpoint, I don't like the last line of TBP chorus.. it feels a bit clumsy for some reason. But I enjoy the rest of the song quite a bit. TMOLS on the other hand is a top 20 DT song for me so it wins for sure.

hefdaddy42

I would never have thought to compare these two.

But since it's here...The Bigger Picture.

TBP wins by a long shot for me. Actually, I like TBP more than everything on SC. :D

Both are really good, but The Bigger Picture is top 10 for me. Just a stellar song. When the new album came out, it was in VERY heavy rotation for me for several weeks.

And I suppose I do like it better than any song on SC, but I also like it better than any song on FII, WDADU, SFAM, Awake and SDOIT, so... Not exactly a slight against SC.

I mentioned only songs with lyrics that literally say "water's edge" or "edge of the water", but yes HY more or less says the same thing =)

?

Someone needs to make a "DT in 10 seconds" video with the word "water" taken from as many songs as possible :P

The Stray Seed

Well, it's featured in quite a bunch of DT songs! =]

hefdaddy42

Water (in various forms) is a key motif in some of Myung's lyrics.

Easily TBP for me.

This. I've never really cared for TMOTLS. Good song and all, but never did it for me.

However, I love TBP.

I was going to say the same thing! The shoreline is basically the water's edge, so... :P

As for water, Take the Time, Lifting Shadows, Hollow Years, (if stream counts then Lines in the Sand), Take Away My Pain, (I'm not sure about Trial of Tears as it has rain but not water as far as I can remember), The Way It Used To Be, (rain again on Endless Sacrifice), (tide on I Walk Beside You), The Ministry obviously, Wither, (streams on Breaking All Illusions) and the others mentioned.

That's all I can think of. I thought there were more...

GasparXR

Stream of Consciousness because of the title even though it has no lyrics. Along for the Ride has tide as well

TMoLS by a hair, not a big fan of either tune but revisiting lost souls perked my ears up on a few sections plus I am still very partial to Portnoy's drum sound.
