Pretty cool interview with John in Vienna from January 25. There's the usual talk about MM being involved for the first time in the music on DT12, a small display of JP's new guitar (no playing, just exposing the pick ups and stuff), some talk about recording the album with Rich Chycki and quite a lot more.

I hope JP never starts using an 8 string.

Oh, me too. I don't think it would fit DT's music at all, regardless of how much the range is broadened. Just like I think Rich Chycki didn't do a job as good as the band believes. I think people are not really happy with DT12's mix and were expecting more. Perhaps bringing the on-the-spot recording was a good thing because they can capture things that are spontaneous that way, but the mix wasn't good in other ways. JP seems to be happy because the working chemistry with Rich is great and, while that can be true, if he's not producing the best release possible, they should give someone else a shot. Jens Bogren, Caveman Shirley or Steven Wilson, anyone?

Agreed. DT12 was a missed opportunity. The songs are great but the overall sound, mix/master isn't on par with what should have been in 2013 IMO.
Jens Bogren and Steven Wilson's name has come up a lot on here. Them being in Europe might be difficult to work with though.
I think Nick Raskulinecz would be cool too. He worked on the last Rush, Alice in Chains, Deftones albums. It would be interesting if they brought him in.
I highly doubt they'll make any changes though. Things seem to be going well for them, the chemistry is perfect and the whole vibe is just positive.

I was hoping his new sig guitar was a bad joke. :tdwn

I'm absolutely baffled that in 2013 the technology prevents bands from having good production. Seriously, everyone should just go back to analog recording. I have some releases from the 70s that sound ridiculously great on headphones.  And in the 30 years since the mid-80s, I still have yet to hear rhythm guitar tones as good as the ones Hetfield used to get.

I love how Wasting Light sounds and that was 100% analogue. Even mastered analogue. I think they said the only digital thing that happened was replication.
