No live, best of, etc.  They have to be in a row based on when they were released.

Mine are: FII, SFAM, SDoIT.  This is due to liking FII just a little more than ToT.  The other two were "requirements" for me.

Also, what is your ALL-TIME favorite 3 studio albums in a row from any band?

Mine are: Operation: Mindcrime, Empire, and Promised Land (Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, and Moving Pictures are an extremely close second.)

energythief

Really should add a poll option.

Mine are Awake, FII, SFAM.

Favorite all time? Probably same as you: Queensryche's O:M, Empire, PL. Although ELO's Time, Secret Messages, Balance of Power is pretty close.

TAC

For DT:
WDADU
I&W
Awake

Of all time? Here are my nominees:

Ozzy: Blizzard, Diary & Bark
Rush: Hemispheres, PW, & MP
UFO: No Heavy Petting, Lights Out, & Obsession
Helloween: Keepers Pt1, Keepers Pt 2 & Pink Bubbles
Iron Maiden: DOD, AMOLAD, TFF
Quote from: wkiml on June 08, 2012, 09:06:35 AMwould have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Quote from: Stadler on February 08, 2025, 12:49:43 PMI wouldn't argue this.

Zyzzyva17

Dream Theater: Their 3 most recent, actually.

All time: Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals

Kotowboy

My three favourite in a row ?

Option 1 : Scenes From A Memory  - - > Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence - - > Train Of Thought.

Option 2 : Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence - - > Train Of Thought - - > Octavarium.

I'm leaning towards Option 2 only because it includes my favourite Dream Theater album.

Crow

I&W, Awake, FII, not really much of a contest for me
though tbh DT doesn't have any spectacular 3-album runs, 2-album is the best they've gotten
SFAM, 6DOIT, ToT is a runner up for 3-album but only about half of 6DOIT is really good so ehh?
turns out signatures are fundamentally broken now so here's my passive-aggressive signature about signatures instead

cygnusx1jg

Which half of SDoIT are you referring to as being really good?

IMO, less than half of ToT is really good.

Jaffa

For DT specifically, I'd go with Scenes from a Memory, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, and Train of Thought.

For all time... that's a bit tougher.  The DT run I just mentioned would be a contender.  Metallica's golden three (RTL, MOP, and AJFA) would be a contender.  So would Muse's Origin of Symmetry, Absolution, and Black Holes and Revelations.  Iron Maiden's Number of the Beast, Piece of Mind, and Powerslave also come to mind.

I don't know.  Tough call.

maximumrocker

Probably

SFAM, SDoIT, and ToT

Runners up would be
SDoIT, Tot, 8va
or BC&SL, ADToE, and DT12

For Green Day i'd go

Dookie - Insomniac - Nimrod.

or Nimrod - Warning - American Idiot.

21st Century is my least favourite album by them and I do love the trilogy.

Prog Snob

Wasn't this done recently?

Eh, anyway.  That's a tough call. Images & Words and Awake are my Top 2, so I can either use WDADU or FII. Or I can use Metropolis 2,  6DOIT, and Train of Thought...

Nah..

WDADU, I & W, Awake

Jaffa

Yeah, Images and Words is definitively my favorite album, so I hate to leave it out in a poll like this.  But my next three favorite albums are TOT, SFAM, and SDOIT, so that run is just too good not to choose.

PROGdrummer

cool thread

My picks are SDOIT, ToT, Octavarium. That was a good era for the band.

Other band? I'll say Genesis- Foxtrot, Selling England, The Lamb.
and if we arent counting EPs
Between The Buried and Me- Colors, The Great Misdirect, and Future Sequence is an epic trio of albums

Kotowboy

Mastodon : You could pretty much pick any consecutive three.

Leviathan - Blood Mountain - Crack The Skye    - what an amazing run.

?

Daso

Definitely I&W - Awake - FII. And

Crow

Also if we're doing an "all-time" thing too
no contest at all
Oceansize - Effloresce, Everyone Into Position, Frames

well actually that's a lie here's two more
Sigur Ros - Agaetis Byrjun, (), Takk...
Pain of Salvation - The Perfect Element I, Remedy Lane, Be

...but yeah I think Oceansize still wins out.
And the PF trio of course is great too.
turns out signatures are fundamentally broken now so here's my passive-aggressive signature about signatures instead

As I Am

My ALL TIME "tri-fecta" of albums are:
Queen II - Sheer Heart Attack & A Night A The Opera :hefdaddy :hefdaddy :hefdaddy

My favorite DT "tri-fecta" of albums are:
Images & Words - Awake & Falling Into Infinity

+10000

For me, I would  extend that trio to the previous and the next one, to make it a quintet.

Tom Bombadil

Dream Theater- I&W, Awake, and FII.

All Time: either the DT one or Genesis: Nursery Crime, Foxtrot, and Selling England by the Pound.

#21
WDADU, I&W, Awake ................could easily be I&W, Awake, FII though...would definitely be if I could drop those first two FII tracks.

All time (aside from DT) --  need to list a few that are hard to separate:

Queensryche: RFO, Mindcrime, Empire (if I had to pick one)
Savatage: Hall of the Mountain King, Gutter Ballet, Streets
Talisman: s/t Genesis, Humanimal
Def leppard: High'n'Dry, Pyromania, Hysteria
Yngwie: Marching Out, Trilogy, Odyssey
Dokken: Tooth and Nail, Under Lock and Key, Back For The Attack
Joe Satriani: Surfing With The Alien, Flying In a Blue Dream, The Extremist
Ozzy: Madman, BATM, Ultimate Sin

son_ov_hades

When Dream And Day Unite, Images And Words, Awake

Non Dream Theater:
Pink Floyd - Meddle, Obscured By Clouds, Dark Side Of The Moon
Genesis - Trespass, Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot
Metallica - Kill Em All, Ride The Lightning, Master Of Puppets
Rush - 2112, A Farewell To Kings, Hemispheres
Black Sabbath - Heaven And Hell, Mob Rules, Born Again
Sepultura - Schizophrenia, Beneath The Remains, Arise
Wolves In The Throne Room - Diadem Of 12 Stars, Two Hunters, Black Cascade

I could go on on but that'll do.

BlobVanDam

FII - SFAM - SDOIT (#4, #2, #1 respectively), so that one wins very easily. There aren't a lot of 3 back to back albums I consider that awesome, so this would be my all time winner there too. :tup Three incredible albums.

ThatOneGuy2112

For DT: SFAM -> SDOIT -> TOT

Of all time? There's just way too many. Dream Theater is still definitely one of them.
Yes (The Yes Album -> Fragile -> Close to the Edge)
Pink Floyd (Dark Side of the Moon -> Wish You Were Here -> Animals)
Metallica (Ride the Lightning -> Master of Puppets -> ...And Justice For All)
Iron Maiden (The Number of the Beast -> Piece of Mind -> Powerslave)
and Rush (2112 -> A Farewell to Kings -> Hemispheres)

olddtfan51@gmail.com

for me its  Scenes From A Memory  - - > Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence - - > Train Of Thought.  :metal

Nearmyth

Gonne have to go with the popular opinion: SFAM - SDOIT - TOT

All time? Well let me see...

Rush: A Farewell To Kings -> Hemispheres -> Permanent Waves

Porcupine Tree: In Absentia -> Deadwing -> Fear of a Blank Planet

Genesis: Foxtrot -> Selling England -> The Lamb (this was really hard because Nursery Cryme is one of my favorite albums by them, but doesn't beat Lamb imo)

Pink Floyd: DSotM -> Wish You Were Here -> Animals (by far).

Steven Wilson: Insurgentes -> Grace For Drowning -> The Raven (  ::) )

King Crimson: Larks' Tongue -> Starless a/ Bible Black -> Red (also really hard because I absolutely love Discipline, but can't leave out Larks)

Just a few of my favorite bands, I can't possibly choose a best.

Laughingplace56

Scenes-->Six Degrees-->Train of Thought. All 3 amazing albums, although ToT is edged down by Awake.
