I've been deliberately avoiding the concerts part of the forum because I want no spoilers, but the bloody DTF and YtseTimes feeds on Facebook and Twitter have spoiled a whole bunch of songs for me. >:(

I've now unfollowed and unliked both of them. :lol

I wanted to keep the setlist a surprise before my first DT show, so I did something similar to what you did. Luckily, I caught the second show of the tour, so it wasn't like I had to avoid it for weeks and weeks. And that was even before I knew they were rotating setlists, so it wouldn't have mattered if I looked at the first night's setlist anyways!
My latest concept album "IV: Timber" IS OUT NOW!

?

I obviously saw the setlist this morning (as I had wanted), but I'll refrain from watching any YT videos before the concert to make the screen videos and the performances of the songs themselves more surprising.

JayOctavarium

That decision was made for me. I logged onto facebook to see Prog Snob posting it all. :lol

mikemangioy

unfortunately i was spoiled a couple of songs in reddit and while i was looking for pics of the show (i wanted to see the stage design), so i unsubscribed to r/dreamtheater too ahahah

I haven't found a single youtube video of the first show this tour.

There are loads...

I broke my rule and watched some. I will probably leave it at that.

Lucien

I found a few, but almost all of them are tiny fragments of songs  :-[

Check the Porto show thread (pages 21 onwards) and there are quite a few videos.

I'm back... and I just want to say... I am very, very glad I did this.  :)

Kotowboy

I just had a mad thought...

Do you think DT are playing The Shattered Fortress because it includes a portion of every song from the 12SS ?

This way they don't have to play the entire 12 Step Suite and potentially annoy certain people - but yet they can play this one

song from it - which includes sections from every song before ?

Just a thought I had.

JiM-Xtreme

I figured it was just for the sake of playing something that hadn't played before. When they played it for me the other night, I couldn't help but feel like it was a little bit of a raise of the middle finger to Portnoy. It certainly didn't feel right playing it here, now... out of context and without him behind the drums.

But yeah, really I just think they're doing it for the sake of playing something different, which I appreciate massively. I actually really like the song  ;D

Kotowboy

I don't think it's any more of a n F U than any other song from the 12SS

If MP can play DT songs in his new bands - then i think any MP era song is fair game.

ariich

Suggesting that it is any kind of F U is really doing a huge discredit both to MP and to the DT guys.

It's a DT song. There is absolutely no reason that they shouldn't play it, and I'm really glad they did because it was absolutely brilliant. The "I am responsible" section was especially fantastic!

Admittedly, I could have chosen my words better just then! I definitely did not mean to suggest that it was an intentional dig at Portnoy - that would be completely ridiculous. What I meant is that I couldn't really understand why they chose that particular song and this particular time to play it, given it's original intended purpose. Out of context, two tours after the album came out and right at the beginning of the first set. It just struck me as a very strange song choice, especially at such an early point in the set. Kinda like if they played Razor's Edge without the rest of Octavarium preceding it, or Losing Time without the rest of Six Degrees.

Just seems a very odd thing to do as far as constructing the setlist is concerned. If they had put it towards the end, sure... but having it so near the beginning, to me it almost seemed like they were doing it to make a point of the fact that they were playing something that hadn't been played live before up until now.

Anyway, don't want to take us too far off topic  :-[

Which they have done both before. :P Razor's Edge was played on the SC tour as the last part of Schmedley Wilcox, and Losing Time/Grande Finale appeared on its own or with one or two previous SDOIT sections on the Octavarium tour, possibly other tours as well.

Oh yeah... they were indeed. Well... medley schmedley.  :lol

Anyway, in those cases I think they were either played at the end of the set or somewhere towards the end. Not at the beginning  :P

Indeed. I do remember them using Learning to Live earlier in a set though, specifically when they opened for Yes in 2004, which is strange given that it's such a popular encore song.

If anything, I think it would have been more of an FU to not play a song just for having MP lyrics. I think playing those songs is honoring MP's contributions to the band if anything, and the fans who want to hear these songs. :tup

Oh wow this creeped up on me, the tour is starting again tomorrow! Have to do it again and hopefully even more successfully this time! (I had a few good ones spoiled before April by Facebook, though I never caved) but I'll be gone for a while (how sad) in the hopes that a NA leg will be announced soon.

..And just when I gained a following lol (I'm being "watched"  :'() sorry to let down  ;)

Will the setlist be different this leg? That'd make me so happy :omg:

I think in an interview they mentioned that it would not be.  I could be wrong.

BTW, if you think you wouldn't enjoy the last setlist as much, just wait until you see/hear it.  There are songs I still don't necessarily dig BUT the last DT concert I saw in Chicago this last spring was one of the absolute best I've ever been to.

Setlist Scotty

JR told me after the Milwaukee show that they would do a different setlist in cities they already played on this tour, but the same setlist as before in cities they haven't visited on this tour yet. Things could have changed since then, and it's possible that his comment was only referring to playing other regions (Asia, Oceania, South America), but that wasn't the impression I was given.
Quote from: BlobVanDam on November 13, 2015, 07:37:14 PMAs a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

Actually, since 2009:
https://www.mikeportnoy.com/dates/tourography/?show=1067
But I still understand what you're saying. But at least they have played shows within a reasonable driving distance (Boston, NYC) which is much more than what people in some other parts of the country (and world, for that matter) get.

Grizz

PN09 on Octavarium day in Wallingford was my first show...

I think that the problem is that they're between venues like Toad's (too small) and Oakdale (too big despite playing it in '00, '02, '03, '04, '06, '07 and '09). They played both in 2000, when they switched from club venues to proscenial venues for Metropolis 2000. The first Oakdale show was a warm up for Roseland (RIP).

Yeah, that's the thing that sucks about CT. We have an awful selection for venues for the in-between bands. I know DT never filled the Oakdale, but they'd still draw a pretty good crowd.

They always drew enough that it should have never been a problem to keep the stop. I would love to know why they keep skipping the Oakdale now. It pisses me off! I loved seeing them there!

Skeever

DT have so many songs that I *want* to know what they're playing. If they're playing the entire new album one set and then playing the 12 Step Saga on the next, I want to know, because in that cause I'm not buying the ticket. If I see they're playing a good mix of stuff or mainly older material, then I'm there.

Tick

Not knowing a set list can backfire on you. A few Rush tours back I did not look at the set list. I went to the bathroom at the end of a song not knowing what was coming next, but I really had to go! It turned out to be the only song in the list they had not played ever! I missed all but the last 30 seconds of it! I said never again! Now I always want to know whats on the set list for every show I go to. It doesn't ruin anything imo.

Grizz

It does for me. The only time I piss at a concert is if I know what's coming. I went during The Embracing Circle in New York, and my dad skipped the first half of Enigma Machine in Boston. I prefer to be pleasantly surprised by, say, The Shattered Fortress or side B of Awake.

I get it. I was like that for years! Only recently have I decided to look first.
Being the old fart that I am I forget what the hell I saw in advance (for real) by the time I'm watching the show anyhow! :lol
