Voted for impermanent resonance. I just enjoy it more than DT12.

Just so everybody knows, this poll seems to be ridiculously spammable.  If you vote, and then click 'vote form' at the top, it'll let you vote again.  I voted for every option once, and it seems to have counted them all.   :lol  Just thought I'd put that out there.

Anyway, my legitimate vote went to DT.

Anguyen92

I voted for Impermanent Resonance.     ;)

Here's how it stands for now.

I know these polls mean nothing, but having a solo band member album leading over the main band's album has to hurt a little of that fanbase's pride.

BlobVanDam

I voted for IR too. It deserves more credit!

Zydar

I voted for DT but I almost went with Haken.

I'm glad that I started this thread, definitely doing the job  :lol

that said... At least DT will lose to some fantastic albums... Don't get me wrong, I love Shant and his album, Semantic Saturation - Solipsistic (Xio wrote easily the best review of this album) and do believe he deserves a Best Newcomer of the year award ... but not the album of the year...

just throwing in my two cents  :)

and this :zydar:

I'd vote for you

I voted for DT, but at least Riverside and Subsignal were terrific contenders!! :tup

Perfectprog.com - intelligent music for intelligent people - now that's my kind of site.  :lol

?

Voted for Impermanent Resonance, although Darkness in a Different Light is awesome as well.

It was between DT and Subsignal for me, but I went with DT.  How many FW fan boys are out there voting multiple times?   :lol    The new album is good but not THAT good, especially being up against some monster releases.

Viking of the Sagas

I love Haken's album a little more than DT12. So for it my vote shall go.

The Stray Seed

Well... actually looks like a single user can vote all the times he wants. We've won.

Viking of the Sagas

Evermind

Yeah, everytime I voting it goes to 6 or 7 votes up.  :lol
Not sure I have the patience to do it till 20k or to write a script.

Tough choice for me.  I like Fates Warning, James LaBrie and Haken better than DT12.   :-\

A "Best prog album of 2013" without TRTRTS? Can't vote then.

TheAtliator

OMG come on!! I just don't get how anyone can think ANYTHING about IR is even close to ANYTHING from DT12?!!? Yet so many people do... I mean, IR isn't even good compared to the other JLB albums  :-\ But honestly, comparing it to DT is comparing mediocre music to the greatest music ever.

Then what especially doesn't make sense is that people even think the vocals on IR are better, which is SOOOO not true. JLB, being my favorite singer, doesn't even do much for me on that album, and yet he gives me chills on DT12.

I'm being kind of overboard now, but I had to get that out somewhere.  :P

It says "Progressive Metal Album Of The Year"...

One word: opinions. :P I think IR is full of memorable, well-written songs. DT12 is ok, but fails to impress me and doesn't really bring anything new to the table.

I know I know... But to me they sound like lazy opinions from people who don't have the attention span to appreciate something more subtle and thoughtful because they hold this silly pretense that if something is deeper, the song-writing suffers. As if a song and its technical make-up are at odds.

Yes, I just called your opinion short-sided

But seriously, I respectfully INTENSELY disagree.

Which is your favorite song on IR? I wouldn't mind if others who like the album answered this as well, I'd like to give it another spin, because it all sounded pretty same-y and generic the first time I listened to it.

I don't expect or want DT to 'bring anything new to the table', I just want great music, which they delivered with every single album (even more so with the last two). When was the last time they truly brought anything new to the table anyway?

I've heard all the songs on DT12 at least ten times and I've tried to love it, but I just don't feel connected to the music. The songs on IR have been built with simple ingredients, but they speak to me (pun intended) more.

My favorite song is Slight of Hand - not for any particular reason, but it just sounds so awesome :hefdaddy The intro with the effect-laden guitar (thanks to Matt for the facts!) is really cool and the chorus is one of the catchiest I've ever heard.

Amnesia.  Destined to Burn and Lost in the Fire are a close 2nd as well.

This is another thing I don't get. On EVERY ALBUM there's stuff on it that DT has NEVER sounded like before. Yet people love them or hate them for always doing the same thing. Makes no sense to me.

-There's not a single other song in their entire career that sounds like Enigma Machine with that secret agent/ spy/ detective movie feel.
-The Looking Glass. It sounds a lot like mid-new Rush, but when else has DT ever had that style?
-ITPOE part 2 intro. I've never heard anything so eerie in my life. Find something on the first 6 DT albums like that. Closest thing might be in Train of Thought, but still way different.
-BMUBMD and Outcry. They've used the electronic drum sound in ITNOG for two seconds, but other than that- totally new side to DT that is unique to those two songs. And it's only in that one little AWESOME part of Outcry. Totally rare
-The freaking EVIL RAGTIME in TDOE. Is there anything they don't do?!!??

That's because it was, and still is. Listen to Mullmuzzler- Keep it to Yourself, and that is the LAST thing you'd ever say about it. Not saying it's the greatest album ever, but from what I've listened to on it, it's everything I'd want from a JLB album- Things DT has never done yet, a gigantic dose of his voice (HAH) with the harmonies mostly or all done by him, extreme notes in all directions (not just range but emotion too), and NON-cookie-cutter song and chord structure.

cyberdrummer

I'd agree that IR is quite samey, but that's not necessarily a bad thing, especially when the music contains some of the catchiest vocal hooks I've heard for a long time.

In my opinion, DT12 is nowhere near "the greatest music ever" - it's certainly stronger than two of the last three albums, but it doesn't reach the heights of DT's earlier material. I don't really like comparing it with IR, because the styles are completely different. Why not just enjoy them both for what they are?

Agreed, but people usually talk about this in the broader scope, music in general, not just DT's music. When WDADU came out it was pretty much unique, there wasn't really anything else out there that sounded like that (not talking about the production :lol). With the latest DT albums, you can easily pinpoint the influences from where these new ideas might have come from. A huge reason why I loved ADTOE is because much of it sounded like classic prog.

kirksnosehair

I'm surprised that Semantic Saturation album is performing that well.

Nice to see Riverside getting a little love.
