Let's suppose that DT is headlining a one-night special event, and you get to choose 3 opening bands. On top of that, you also get to choose how long each band's set is.

Which bands would you choose? What order would they come on? How long would they play?

Note: Feel free to pick any artist, in any genre...without the need for it to even make sense. If you want Dr. Dre as the opener, go for it  :coolio

I saw my dream concert a few years ago when DT opened for IM. In fact, I saw it twice. Sadly DT's set was not my favorite.

TheAtliator

Kansas             60 min
Porcupine Tree  75 min
Opeth               75 min
Rush                 60 min
Symphony X     90 min with The Odyssey and no Iconoclast songs
Styx                 2 hours
Dream Theater 3 hours

in that order.

I would give each band 3 hours, but I want to keep it realistic.

Mine would look like this:

Opener: Avenged Sevenfold
Duration: 1 Hour,  30 Mins
Notes: This would be a kick-ass way to open the show. I get upset how it is looked-down-upon by many to like this band these days. Their increasing popularity has brought a lot of hate, negativity, and "fanboy" accusation. They've been my 2nd favorite band for about 8 years now, since City Of Evil came out. Also, I wouldn't want them to play anything off of their latest album "Hail To The King." VERY lackluster effort.

Second Band: Sonata Arctica
Duration: 1 Hour
Notes: These guys used to be one of my favorite bands back in 2000-2002. I can say that I like every single one of their albums. I haven't been into them nearly as much these days, but they have an amazing discography and they are AWESOME live. I've seen them about 4 times, and their singer is incredible.

Third Band: Porcupine Tree (They are not currently "together", but hey, it's a dream concert)
Duration: 1 Hour, 30 mins
Notes: Easily my second favorite band. SO many great songs spanning their discography. Definitely a band that people either love, or love to hate. I think that the enormous amount of praise that Steven Wilson makes some people mad or something. I would want them to play mainly songs from In Absentia, Deadwing, Fear Of A Blank Planet, and The Incident.

Headliner: DT
Duration: 2 Hours, 30 Minutes
Notes: I would want "An Evening With" length set. I was considering making a set list, but I find that too difficult. Anything which involves picking and choosing songs with this band is nearly impossible for me, considering I like literally 99% of all of their songs.

I ALMOST chose Symphony X as my second band, and I definitely would want The Odyssey too.

I'm actually new to Opeth...definitely liking them a lot so far. From one DT fan to another, do you have any specific song recommendations? Keep in mind....I love epics, I love defined and moving melodies, and I can tolerate screaming as long as it is offset by some singing parts. Thanks in advance!

TheAtliator

I'm new to Opeth too so I'd ask you the same question  :lol but I do know that the newest one, Heritage is an AWESOME album.

If it was me, the one concert I would love to go to involving DT headlining would be if Alter Bridge and Foo Fighters are the opening acts.

I would put AB with an hour, Foo Fighters with 75 min., and DT with 2.5 hours.

I would also would have put Rush there, but let's face it, anything less than 2.5 hours of Rush would not suffice for me and you wouldn't want it to overshadow DT, so yeah.

Awesome, thanks man. I believe I listened to a song or two from Heritage and remember enjoying it. I'll listen to it more tonight.

Sonata Arctica
The Dear Hunter
Flying Colors
Nightwish
Dream Theater

Good to see someone else chose Sonata Arctica! Didn't really expect to see that.

Also cool to see multiple people chose Flying Colors. Loved their album.

I forgot to add that for the DT set, I would want it to be with the Octavarium Orchestra. And I would want it to be split into 2 sections, with MM playing the first half and MP joining the band for the second half :)

In that case, I would probably add Transatlantic, Liquid Tension, or Flying Colors to the acts as well. Since MP would be there and all.

adamack

Damnit, I keep thinking of more. I'd want to see Manic Bloom too. I always forget about them.

Dude, I forgot all about Stratovarius! Wow...used to be one of my favorites in high school.

I loved their album "Infinite". Can't remember their other album names now, but I'm going to have fun tonight revisiting them.

:metal

XB0BX

Cynic: 1 hour (Veil of Maya + Best songs from TiA + Carbon Based Anatomy)

Metallica: 1 hour (Best tunes from the "holy trinity" (IMO) of RtL + MoP + AJFA)

Death: 1.5 hours

Dream Theater: 73 hours

It pains me to leave off my favorite band ever (Rush), but I've already seen them multiple times, and I've never seen Cynic, Metallica, or Chuck Schuldiner's corpse.

Enalya

Finntroll - 45min  (Heavy, technical, jazzy folk metal, so much fun live)
Wintersun - 1h (Time I is for me one of the best albums ever made)
Nightwish   - 1,5h (Creative, satisfying, epic music with a lot of story going on, awesome live)
Dream Theater   - 2,5h (No explanation needed)

Lucien

Now with must-have songs

Paul Winter Consort (jazzy, with an awesome improvisation saxophonist) 15 minutes (Cornmeal Medicine Wheel, Wolf Eyes)
The Enid (mostly instrumental artsy prog) 20 minutes (Tripping the Light Fantastic, The Demon King)
Trans-Siberian Orchestra (AWESOME progressive symphonic rock) 30 minutes (Beethoven's Last Night, Moonlight and Madness)
Wolves in the Throne Room (one of the only black metal groups I like) 10 minutes (The Cleansing)
Pendragon (awesome neo-prog group) 20 minutes (The Freak Show, Alaska)
Rush 1hr (Emotion Detector, The Fountain of Lamneth)
Porcupine Tree 30 minutes (Deadwing, It Will Rain for a Million Years)
Haken 30 minutes (Visions, Falling Back to Earth)
Dream Theater 1hr30min (Octavarium, Breaking All Illusions)

5 hour concert that would make me cry

Was so close to putting this. Same exact 3 albums I was going to mention too.

Nightwish   - 1,5h (Creative, satisfying, epic music with a lot of story going on, awesome live)

I can second your sentiment of them being awesome live. They opened for Sonata Arctica the last time I saw them, and they were awesome. It was Annette who was singing then...I personally liked Tarja and I like Floor better, but it was still really good.

Scorpion

Since this has been absolved of the need to make any sense whatsoever, this is just basically "bands that I would love to see live that I haven't yet". So, it would probably be this:

1st Opener: Wintersun (45 minutes) - as long as they play "Winter Madness", "Death and the Healing", "Sons of Winter and Stars" and "Land of Snow and Sorrow", I'd be happy already - which leaves us about ten minutes to go.

2nd Opener: Muse (1 hour) - as if they'd ever open for anyone anymore, but this is a dream, right? Please do play "Uprising", "Take a Bow" and "Unnatural Selection". The rest is up to you, as long as "Guiding Light" is left off the set.

3rd Opener: Devin Townsend Project (2 hours) - I'd actually choose Devin over DT, any day, but that's not how the rules work. So, Devin just gets a 2 hour set, where he plays all of Terria and other assorted stuff from his discography, like "Suicide", "Bastard", "Lady Helen" and "Awake!!"

Main Set: Dream Theater (2 hours) - as I'd probably be exhausted, they can just do a 2 hour best of their discog, including "Trial of Tears", "A Change of Seasons", "Lines in the Sand" and "Eve", plus some shorter stuff to balance those three epics out.

mikemangioy

Opener: Sabaton (45 mins)
These guys set the stage on fire! Awesome to open a festival of sorts.

Second band: Muse (1 hr)
Muse are known for being a great live band, and I would love to see 'em.

Third band: Rammstein (1hr30m)
I said Sabaton would set the stage on fire, but these guys will do it for reals. Like, literally.

Headliner: Dream Theater (An Evening With set -> 3hr)
They would play the setlist I posted in the wishlist thread.

Cool! I'm happy about Floor joining, she has this powerful voice and can do anything (plus, country mate haha). Sonata Arctica is also high on my favorite list.

Yeay, finally another Wintersun fan :metal I would add Sleeping Stars to this.

Marion Crane

DT with Muse, Coheed and Metallica. The only one of those DT would ever maybe headline over would be Coheed though

I like your Finnish music taste!!  :tup   ;)

Honestly, for me, I'd prefer NO opening bands.  But if there are going to be opening bands, I'd have to go with this order:

1: Transatlantic
2: Iron Maiden
3: Dream Theater

Hehe, can you find yourself in that?
Until DT it was mostly Scandinavian and European metal for me.

Setlist Scotty

Interesting thread. For me, it would have to be a co-headlining show with Rush with a pair of special guests, so it would need to be a day long gig. So it would be:

Riverside - 1.5 hours

Porcupine Tree - 1.5 hours

Dream Theater - 2.5 hours

Rush - 2.5 hours

Yup. That outta do it.
Quote from: BlobVanDam on November 13, 2015, 07:37:14 PMAs a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.
