Centerpiece.

All jokes aside, I think Illumination Theory would've sounded great as well.

Centerpiece.

And then everyone would say "omg that must mean this is the middle album of their career. DT must be releasing 23 albums"

I am happy with it being called DT.  I think at this point in their careers this is representative of who they want to be.  With JP as the main influence the emphasis on guitar driven songs makes sense, although I love JR.  JR's taking a little bit of a backseat on this one probably makes them a little more accessible to a wider audience and again, I am cool with that.  People need to hear this band, but I have teenagers and I play DT for them all the time but I see them glaze over sometime on the keyboard solos.  Doesn't speak to them the way it does some of us long in the tooth prog fans.  With an increased focus on songwriting, lyrics and the "tasty" bits that seem to grab folks attention, I think they are right on track with where they want to be at this time in their careers, without compromising the incredibly displays of virtuosity they are known for.  And JLB, well, he just shines on this record IMO.

Mike Mangini did thank DT for making him the drummer, saying "I am grateful to go on the journey through the second half of your career" It was something like that.

I think DT wasted two great potential titles in the last couple records. Bridges In The Sky and Illumination Theory would have been awesome.

Going by just the album cover, I would suggest:

"Rebirth"

Rodni Demental

I actually really like the idea of False Awakening as the album title, but maybe that gives too much of a preconception of what the journey's really about..

Honestly, when I burnt it before my original copy had arrived, I just wrote "Dream Theater 2013" on the CD, simple enough. In fact, I always put the year on the end if I'm burning an album myself.

The Letter M

Some random word-y titles I'm throwing out there...

On The Horizon
The Pursuit Of Truth
Surrender To The Light
In My Darkest Hour
Illuminate The Night

And actually Along For The Ride would have been a good title, too, especially given the context of the song's lyrics about how we're all on this planet (as seen on the album cover), going along for the ride.

Illumination Theory would have been the obvious choice, but I think False Awakening sounds a lot cooler. (Even though it contains the title of a previous record of theirs...)

Burn!!

When I saw the unicyclist on top of the planet on this site, I thought of 'Into Infinity and beyond'.

If u think about it, pretty much every song title would've worked as an album title. At least in my opinion....

Surrender to Reason
The bigger picture
Behind the veil
The looking glass

Etc

They all have this kind of dual meaning or can be applied to different circumstances.

Rhayader

I don't know, but this album certainly doesn't reprent Dream Theater to me because they achieved the worst album of their career.
With this opinion, I think Rhayader is pretty much alone.

In this forum, yes, which is not impressing.

Your entitled to your opinion, but I seriously don't understand it.  You may have covered this elsewhere, but what makes you think it's their worse album.

What about;

Enigma
Lucid Dream
Grace Before Glory

Sorry. Was still feeling sore about the master. Your reply did actually make lol.

(FWIW, I'm happy with the self-title. Great set of songs.)

It's interesting how this album is so extremely polarizing for the fans. Well it's definitely a lot different. I remember Steven Wilson once said in an interview that a sign of great album for him is when many people really love it and many people really hate it and I think that makes sense.

I personally still can't stop listening to this album and it's still getting better with every listen. I haven't got this fresh and interesting feeling from DT album for this long since never. The part "this long" is important, usually that freshness and excitement wears off pretty quickly.

For me some songs are just beginning to reveal their true awesomeness like Enigma Machine, Behind The Veil and Along For The Ride and some are still flawless like they were from first few listens like Flase Awakening Suite, Surrender To Reason, Illumination Theory. My least favorite song is The Bigger Picture and I really really like that one too.

So based on this I think that the title "Dream Theater" is perfect. "Illumination Theory" would be second best choice.

Darkest Hour
it fits well, it also creates a nice contradiction with Illumination Theory.

And it fits with Behind The Veil  :tup

ot: I like the idea of naming it The Pursuit Of Truth, or maybe Surrender, Trust, and Passion. Grace Before Glory sounds nice as well.

I feel like "Theory" would have been a cool name. "Illumination Theory" doesn't sound like a very good album title to me for some reason.

Everybody seems to like Illumination Theory but I'd just shorten it to Illumination.  Seems very catchy to me.
