After all these years of hearing that sentence, I still have no idea if it's a compliment or a criticism.

*snip*

Both halves of the statement are compliments, but it's not in his nature to insult people, so there's nothing there for those that he doesn't like.  He's addressing the other two groups.

Except maybe the Sackville-Bagginses   ;D

Even if he would eventually get pissed enough to tell them off when they invade his house and take his stuff, Bilbo was still way too cool to publicly denounce them.  Bilbo was awesome that way.  They suck, everyone knows it, no need to bring it up.

Im asking seriously.
Okay, I'm brand spankin' new here, but I was under the assumption that this is a fan site.
All I've seen, thus far, is complaints about this song or that album or which band member sucks ...
I don't get it. I've even read someone saying that they are bored by Dream Theater after multiple listens.
I have literally, no exaggeration, listened to DT every single day for the past three years.
While I have favorite songs and many of them change, I cannot say that there is one song that I dislike.
Am I really alone in this?

No you're not. I feel the same way. As you say, there are some songs I like more than others, but I absolutely do not hate/get bored of ANY DT song/album. I find it quite deflating to read any criticism of them. Makes me feel quite intimidated to say I liked a certain aspect of a song/album.

It's a forum. Why should you be intimidated to say Raw Dog is your #1 song, or Never Enough, or Prophets of War? There is nothing intimidating about this website. Its amazing how accepting people are here. There's a reason why I have almost 2000 posts within the half year I've been here  ;D

bosk1

Shut up, Lucien.  Your opinions are stupid, and you should never post them again.

Ok, so to be a fan of a band I have to like every single thing they produce?  I think I just realized I'm not a fan of anything.

This album cycle must have been difficult for you, though, OP.  Just imagine, god forbid, that there was a song on DT12 that you didn't like.  You would have become not-a-fan!

This is why we can't have nice things.

Every time these kinds of comments come around I'm shocked why anyone would want to participate in a forum where everyone agreed that DT is the greatest band ever and everything they shit is gold. Even in my hardcore fan days that wouldn't have been appealing.

NunoBadmintoncourt

I don't expect everyone to see eye to eye on things related to the band, but much like the OP, I was astounded by the number of negative posts I read within mere minutes of joining.
I saw numerous posts with claims of not even liking or listening to the band anymore and lists of albums from they band they hated, which ended up being half the discography.

So, with that said, I can understand why one might be perplexed as to why someone would feel compelled to join the forum of a band they have little use for anymore.

fllnsprrw

I can certainly see where the OP is coming from though. I remember when I first became a fan when 6DOIT came out. Filled with nothing but excitement and enthusiasm about my new discovery,  I joined the forums to see what others are saying about it, to see if they also love it as much as I do. But what I remember reading the most was all of the bad comments and harsh criticism. They definitely stick out more. It is deflating to see and a little bit of a buzz kill.  But that's just the way it is. whatareyagonnado

Many people who post here have been members for the better part of a decade. Opinions and tastes change.

Orbert

Exactly.  I've been on these boards since Scenes from a Memory, which is still one of my favorite albums of all time.  I'm not as high on Dream Theater as I was back then, but that's really no reason to just leave.  This place is much more than just Dream Theater forums.  It was the original draw for nearly all of us, and is still a large part of us, but times change and people change.

What DVD is it on where JP talks about how having Awake out meant that fans woud have two releases to compare side by side? He did discount WDADU as that never really caught on at the time.

His point was that after Images, there was a fan base waiting for a release. This was the first time in DTs career that this happened. And he even says something along the lines of "now people would have two releases to compare.....'I don't like the new one; I prefer the last album' or 'This album is better than their last'". I don't remember the quote exactly but I think what JP was acknowledging was that fans will like some things more than others.

TBH, with a back catalogue as strongs as DTs for me, they could release an album tomorrow that I would consider just stinks. I'd still be a fan safe in the knowledge that the next album would be different again. It's just how they are.

DT albums always make more sense when put in the context of their back catalogue. I just think part of being a fan is being able to say what you don't like or jive with just as much as you what you do like.

Negative comments will always stick out more. Particularly the more controversial ones. Those threads tend to garner more responses as you get defenders and detractors alike joining in.

Threads commending a particular album or song don't tend to attract as much discussion as it's bad form to join in a thread bashing something that's primarily there to talk about how good something is.

It's human nature. A cricket bat to the knees would engender a much more exaggerated reaction than a huge slab of chocolate fudge cake.

It says something about human nature in general when we tend to focus on the negative more than the positive. Withstanding blatant condescending disrespect, I tend to brush negative comments off my shoulders as they are opinions unlike my own which in some person's mind hold a concrete validity that comprises who they are. They make for good discussion and sometimes enlightening.  It's that simple.

puppyonacid

Exactly.

Apparently it means you aren't really a fan though.

Podaar

I'm more like the OP in that there is very little DT I don't love and, in fact, I can find merit even in the songs I skip (I'm looking at you SDV). Unlike the OP I enjoy opposing opinions because they compel me to reassess my opinions and often offer a perspective that can increase my enjoyment.

Okay, that's out of the way. What baffles me is the butt hurt. Some posters act like DT wrote something they don't like in an effort to personally piss them off!  :lol

[edit] I just noticed that if you post butt hurt hyphenated it comes out as Super Dude:) Anyone know the story behind that? [/edit]

This is exactly the point I wanted to put across.

Side point: I want a huge slab of chocolate fudge cake now.

puppyonacid

I would definitely agree with the notion that there is merit in everything DT has released.
