It doesn't matter.  The category was obviously a joke to the Grammy's at the time.  The band wasn't even expecting to win because they themselves didn't feel they belonged in the category.  They are not a hard rock band at all.
The band wasn't expecting to win because they knew that Metallica was the hot new talent that was extremely popular; I certainly don't remember them saying they shouldn't have been nominated.

Ian Anderson himself said he was surprised at the nomination because he felt the band did not fit the category in any way.

Guess I'm thinking of more of their earlier work being "hard rock" or at least the songs I'm familiar with. Listening to a song off Crest on a Knave and it's definitely not hard rock.

Each time I listen to TEI I have the same daydream that DT is on stage at the Grammy's playing that song.....just nailing it and the industry crowd is into it.....and after the Grammy's conclude their the trending thing on every social media network and just explode into mainstream.

I only wish the mainstream exposure explosion on them for the monetary value it'd give them. They deserve it. And I kind of would like to see them get the recognition outside of the music industry for being incredible musicians.

It would be fantastic to include DT on the show for a live performance.  It would be a showstopper.

To me it's a no brainer to have them play. Year after year is the say old boring bands....over and over. They allow 8-10 minute hip hop / pop mash ups.....they can give a "new" fresh sounding band 8-10 minutes. I get that the general public knows the song those hip hop and pop folk are singing.....but DT playing the Grammys would end up being the talk of the town.

It would be a showstopper, but not sure the grammy crowd could handle it. They will probably have Elton do a song from his latest cd or Taylor Swift.

I think it's absolutely insane that the Grammys still don't have a 'Best Metal Album' award. Seriously, would handing out one more award for what's really an entire range of genres during the non-televised bit really be all that difficult?

Or best lead guitarist that looks like a bear.

Still scalping their ticket-less applause

I don't think Elton John would be very interested in doing Taylor Swift.

Woah there! Now much as I and many DT fans worldwide would love this, and no doubt it would raise the odd eyebrow from people who haven't heard of DT but would like them...........many people just don't hear what we hear.

I have heard DT described as "a poor mans guns n roses" and "white noise" and all sorts in between. I don't even try and defend them against such narrow minded comparisons. Fact is, what we hear as amazing most people just don't get.

People like that would not give a hoot about Mangini's incredible one handed fills........Myungs insane technique......Petrucci's off the chart dexterity.....Labrie's range and powerful voice and Rudess's subtle genius.

They would hear just what they want to hear. "Why is this song so long?" "That singer can't sing!" "Who's that chick on bass?" "That drummer can't keep a beat" "Heavy Metal isn't even music!"

Be careful what you wish for.

If someone describes DT as a "poor man's guns n' roses", their opinion should be automatically invalidated. I can't even fathom where that comparison would have merit.  Maybe a comparison to Rush or Yes would hold more validity.

That is my point.

It was a real "WTF!" moment. I was just about to launch in to a "this is why that statement is so moronically wrong" type rant but then I figured "what's the point?"

This person is your run of the mill Adele, hip-hop, chart music type music fan. Music is just background to them. They consider the Foo Fighters to be heavy metal.

I feel that would be the majority of people watching the grammy's. It's no so far fetched. We all know of people who just wouldn't get DT.

The Enemy Inside is a fast paced metal song that people would probably get.  NOW, if they decided to play Dance Of Eternity (not happening but this is for shits and giggles), heads would explode, JP would go into Killzone-mode, and the entire audience would be chanting 5/8, 5/8, TEH NUGGETZ, TEH NUGGETZ.

I can't hear even the remotest comparison to GNR in DT's music. They're completely different bands. DT couldn't play GNR's style as good as GNR did, and GNR wouldn't have a hope of playing a DT song. And that's ok, because they're absolutely nothing alike.
For someone to even mention the two together shows either a piss poor understanding of rock/metal music, or simply does not know these bands' music at all.

A lot of people don't get any kind of metal songs :P I could see Along for the Ride appealing to a wider audience, but it's not that representative of DT's overall style so even if someone liked the song they might go "wtf is this shit" upon hearing some other songs.

I assume most people get metal; they just don't think it serves a purpose.  Now prog metal, most people neither get nor think serves a purpose.  Just my opinion though, my friend.
