I saw someone else point out, and I just want to echo.    What a home run by JP.   I really felt that his lyrics had fallen off the table for quite some time...but I'm really loving his lyrics on this album.   His lyrical contributions are SO good on this album, it almost overshadows the long awaited return to lyric writing of JMX.

IMO, these are *EASILY* JP's best lyrics since Awake.   Absolutely no contest.

I agree that these are the most consistent from start to finish lyrics DT has had in quite some time. ADTOE was a good start at leaving the lyrical trainwrecks that are SC and BC&SL (IMO) behind and driving forward, and this albums lyrics are pretty friggin good. There are many powerful lines and they work well with the emotion and passion JLB sings them with.

Tom Bombadil

This album has some of the best lyrics in a VERY long time. There aren't any cringe-worthy or cheesy lyrics, they're just all good.

Shine

Eh. They're okay. Better than BCSL, sure. Better than most of Octavarium.

But they're still pretty literal. I prefer lyrics that are more open to interpretation, less

"You are not content with being nameless and unknown
Trying to rise above the fray
Eager to give it all away

Some will not admit their 15 minutes have expired
Too much attention much too soon
Don't see you walking on the moon"

more

"They took pictures of our dreams
Ran to hide behind the stairs
And said maybe when it's right for you, they'll fall

But if they don't come down
Resist the need to pull them in
And throw them away
Better to save the mystery
Than surrender to the secret"

LCArenas

DT12 is lyrically the best album they've made since Octavarium, probably even better than Train of Thought. There's definitely an improvement.

Agreed.  Nothing cringe worthy and good quality lyrics.  I love the section on Illumination Theory

To really feel the joy in life
You must suffer through the pain
When you surrender to the light
You can face the darkest days

Very powerful section

Great lyrics on TBP, BTV, STR, IT.

Pretty good lyrics on TEI and TLG.

Okayish lyrics on AFTR.

Still too early to evaluate the lyrics on FAS and EM, haven't sunk in yet.

Yeah, those ones are pretty deep.  :P

The Letter M

I actually quite like the lyrics this time around. They evoke a classic-DT era feel to them, but are still kind of modern. It's unusual, but it's the best of then and now, for me, as far as JP lyrics go. I was hoping for a JLB song, though.

?

I think the lyrics are decent and certainly miles better than on SC and BC&SL, but I don't think they are exceptionally great. I'd say FII and Six Degrees are the best post-Awake albums lyrically, thanks to gems like Lines in the Sand and Misunderstood - nothing on DT12 is on that level IMO.

I'm not really into IT's lyrics, some of them are exceptionally cheesy, but other than that the lyrics are one of my biggest reasons why DT12 exceeded my expectations so much :tup
