We had a poll for drum sounds so there could be one for guitar sounds as well :D Is the tone on DT12 is chocolate cake-y enough for you people or will some other album win?

Awake has my favorite guitar sound - the quadruple tracking makes the rhythm guitars really crunchy and I love how dreamy the clean guitars sound :hefdaddy

Tom Bombadil

Definitely Awake. JP's tones are so perfect on this album.

Onno

Polarbear

I would be lying if i said anything other than Awake.

Podaar

UFO - Obsession

But seriously, I picked Awake as well. I've always been a fan of the plug a guitar into an amp with maybe a couple of effect pedals and leave it at that. John's modern distortion tones are great but a bit too silky for my personal preferences.

Knguro

I used to have ToT as my fav, then BC&SL came up with this glorious tone, theeen Dream Theater, JP has combine every single good thing that he has on his armament, merged it and created his weapon of choice, Chocolate Cake with Frosting.

N4Player

SFAM and DT12 as a very close second.

aprilethereal

DT12, with BC&SL as a close second. I actually really like all of them except for WDADU and TOT.

GalacticGuitarist87

Dream Theater, Awake, and ToT have the best guitar sounds/tones in my opinion.

fadetoblackdude7

Lovin' me some chocolate cake! (DT12)

farsight

SFAM for rhythm, FII for lead tones.

BlobVanDam

Basically I just vote for SDOIT for everything, because it's always going to be the right answer. :hat

Aside from WDADU though, his guitars have never sounded bad.

FII would also have been an acceptable answer. I love the rockier tone on that.

Ruba

A battle between FII and SDOIT. Went with the latter.

Elite

It's rehash-old-threads-month I see! I always vote for Awake when it comes to JP's tone. Same thing this time around.

Train of Thought. Definitely the best sounding album overall in my opinion.

Train of Thought. Definitely the best sounding album overall in my opinion.

I don't like the snare on that album. It sounds like every hit is a rimshot.

jsem

Even though Awake is far from my favorite DT album, the guitar tone is the best. Awake is sonically wonderful.

adastra

My vote goes for Falling Into Infinity! My favourite album of all tiems!

Rhythm = Awake

Lead = I&W
Love his Ibby lead tone.

serrano

I like the guitar tone on SC   :o  on tour I think he sounded best on the ADTOE tour.

wolfking

I'm very tempted to vote for DT12.

I usually go right to SDOIT, because I love pretty much everything about that album sonically, but you know what? DT has really, really good guitar tones.... Say what you will about the mastering, mixing, etc... JP's guitars sound excellent.  So, for now I'm going to vote for DT, it might be just because its fresh to my ears, but it was hard to choose between that and SDOIT.

SuperTaco

I'm going to be that one buzz kill that says WDADU because it really is my favorite.

We can get into technicalities all we want regarding production, sound quality and things like that, but the album has an atmospheric quality that the guitar tone is certainly a big part of. Listen to the way the chords sound, the way JP blends clean and distorted tracks, and the way the guitars mesh with the keyboards. It is unlike anything else I've ever heard, and their sound has been changing ever since. The tone has an ethereal, powerful quality to it. It sort of reminds me of 80's neo-classical shredders like Yngwie, who were also very good at creating a similar feeling of atmosphere.

You've all probably noticed by now, but I feel I pretty much have to post in any thread talking about WDADU, being one of the 3 people in the world who has it on the top of my list.  :lol

As for distorted guitars, Awake and DT, with 6DoiT being a close second. For clean guitars, ToT.

Cable

ToT, but I am a sucker for Recto tone.

I actually do not really like Awake's rhythm tone. The Recto/Mark blend with the production never did it for me.  :-[

TheAtliator

I don't know much about what equipment he's been using, but there's simply nothing in the world that can compare with the beauty that is the experience of hearing the Lost Not Forgotten solo kick off.

Ruba

I didn't really like the guitar tone on DT12 on the first listen.  ???

I think I'll pay some attention to it the next time.

Rodni Demental

Kind of interesting how a lot of people's favourites (I&W, Scenes) admittedly, still aren't our preferred guitar sound. Honestly my answer was Train of Thought because I think Honour Thy Father and As I Am's guitar tone is just fantastic. But in hindsight, I feel Falling into Infinity was where JP really started demonstrating and integrating some much finer and precise technique to his guitar playing and the tone really brings that out in songs like Trial of Tears and Lines in the Sand. But it's evident in a lot of places in FII.

Ħ

My least favorite guitar tone (aside from WDADU) is Awake's. It's just muddy and not very crisp.

Today, I'd say SFAM, SDOIT, and FII have the best guitar sound.

GasparXR

DT12, with BC&SL and SDOIT being close seconds. Awake is good, but on the 7-string songs, they get muffled out, especially on the chugging parts in The Mirror. It makes it hard to tell the tonality.
