QuoteOne question that came up on Facebook when I was preparing for this interview was, do you have any plans to play "Space Dye Vest" live? [Mike Portnoy had gone on record as saying "Space Dye Vest" was so identified with former Dream Theater keyboard player Kevin Moore that he didn't think ever be played without him]

Um... I don't really have plans on doing that. I mean, you never know. I'm not sure how great of a live song that'd be. It's obviously very mellow and spacey and atmospheric. I mean, it could be a cool moment in the set. It'd certainly be rewarding to people that have wanted to hear that. It's not the first song I'd go to when thinking of what to play in a live show.

You'd need to follow it with something that's really up!

Yeah definitely! It might depress the audience! But it's a cool song. I'm sure eventually we will but I haven't thought too much about that at this moment.

OMG JP you can't fear the mellow atmospheric stuff. With three hours in the set, there's gotta be some time for that sort of stuff. And I hate how they dropped Scarred and The Great Debate and other rarely played songs because of "lack of audience reaction" while in truth people are just appreciating those songs in a more silent manner.

Mladen

That was a very good question, I've been waiting for someone to ask him that. Fingers crossed for it to happen at some point...

Cool interview! Thanks for posting it! Very interesting to read about the "phased" approach JP talks about with the lyrics and melodies on this record.  Judging by the end result I'd say it was a great process! The lyrics and melodies on DT12 seem to be some of the most consistent DT has had in a long time, I cant think of one bad or cringe-worthy lyric off the top of my head.

Yeah, exactly. I may have said this multiple times, but SDV would be a perfect breather between some more intense songs. I mean, they had the acoustic break in the setlist on the last tour and SDV could fill that spot nicely. Anyway, the main thing is that this isn't impossible, and the words "I'm sure eventually we will" make me a happy man!

Space Dye Vest would be a song I actually would want to hear live!

 Ugh. That song is enough of a downer on the album, and would be an epic buzzkill live.

Madman Shepherd

SDV would be awesome.  Mike played it up so much as the forbidden song that it just gave it more hype.  I'm glad JP is just treating it as another song from their catalog and doesn't rule out playing it.

I think he is just being nice for the interview.  I would be very surprised if it ever showed up on a DT stage.

This. I always got the feeling that JP (and maybe other members) didn't really like that MP ruled out playing songs live, or making albums a certain way. I think JP is just trying to establish that nothing is off limits and we should expect surprises from the band.

It's been years since I last considered SDV to be a depressing track. Nowadays it gets me rather pumped. Not in the same way as PMU, to say it all, more like emotionally resonating, a tension that is beautifully released with the full band resolution of the song.

I'm positive that the song wouldn't be depressing to the audience. That being said, JP words sound like an obituary to our hopes for it. :(

I think so too, since they're leaning away from that sorta stuff in their setlists, but at least he didn't say "oh no, that's Kevin Moore's song, it shouldn't be played without him" or something. I'm going to hold him to this "eventually we will" :lol after all, they played Dissapear twice, and Vacant, and a bunch of other "depressing" songs.

Not really.  He mentioned it, what, maybe three times?  And wasn't it always in respose to fan questions about it?  I think the fans played up Mike's comments and gave it more hype.

Not really. His most famous comments on it come from the Score drumming commentary, which was just him talking on his own.

Don't Look Past Me!

I do agree with whoever said JP is not creating "bans" on songs from being played live. I bet they will listen to fan responses and reactions to certain things.
