Here's another reason why I reacted as I did. The fanbase (or rather, a portion of it) has a very serious way of attaching to any and all opinions of the band members, amplifying it in a bad way. I've had that felt directly on my body.

Back when BCSL was released, I did my review for the album many weeks before the release. It was a generally positive review, albeit I pointed out a few things I didn't personally like about the album. I wrote it in norwegian, and hastily translated it into english, which caused a few of my colloquialisms and idioms to fall flat, but you still understood the general jist of the review. It was posted here, and people here generally were appreciative and positive. Then someone posted it on a bandmember forum, and the bandmember responded saying it was bascially the most disgusting review he'd ever read and that I should just stop listening to DT. And people latched on to that big time. I got so many emails yelling at me for writing a review...
I swear I heard a similar backrage from another forum member on DTF. It was MP that reacted to something he wrote on his forum and all hell broke lose. Can't remember what, anyone know what i'm talking about?

RMGadelha

I think you're probably talking about the guy who criticized The Best of Time's lyrics at his forum. To be honest, I wasn't surprised by MP's reaction given how much the song means to him.

Well, in that dude's defense.. The lyrics of The Best of Times aren't very good.

While that may be true, the way he analyzed the lyrics and the place where he was posting don't go too well together...

I'm sad to hear that JM reacted that way.

"So... Don't listen to Dream Theater... Anymore."

The sad thing is that most interviews are probably at least 50% like that and Jordan would like to reply like that in at least 100% of the cases, only he can't.
Doubtful..
This. He's way too nice for that.

What I was trying to say is that I'm pretty sure many interviews have a lot of stupid questions just like in JR's parody and it would be very understandable if someone would like to react to them like in the video, because it's so frustrating to repeat well known facts again and again. I know JR would never really do that, not only because he's a nice guy but also because he knows it's a tedious part of his profession he has to live with. But I'm convinced he thinks about that kind of stuff every now and then with interviewers who didn't do their homework.

The fact that it was taken down might indicate he hit a sore spot for some people who only begin to understand what type of answers they would actually have deserved. Journalists (wannabes and pros alike) always expect an interviewee to be prepared. It would only be fair to expect the same from them, wouldn't it?

Everything is never enough. ::)

Greetings...
Nef

I'm sure Jordan understands that some of the questions being repeated is fairly necessary and typical, because, after all, most people don't read every interview that a particular person does. Only committed fans do that. I think (having not at all seen the video) that this is a situation where he's frustrated with answering the same questions and is making fun of that part of the business. I would hope that he gets that reviewers have to do that to a certain extent. It seems to me that it's just understood to be part of the process. I mean, I've been skimming few the first three or four questions of new JP or JLB or MM interviews these days because all of them are stuff like "Why are you making a self-titled album?" "How did the writing process go with MM involved?" But I understand why they have to do it and that it's part of the process.

Can't believe how long this is going on for.

This is an IMPORTANT topic.... I'm looking forward for at least 12 pages!

Viking of the Sagas

Well the MP stuff was stupid to read.

PetFish criticized something in a bad manner and it got an extremely bad backlash. It wasn't in a good taste and that was punished.

I can understand that he didn't like the lyrics.. They really aren't the best, But saying that MP didn't put enough "thought" in them  :-X  That was rude as shit.

The video is gone. Can anyone recap what was actually said?

To sum it up he tried to sound very frustrated; "don't you have anything better to ask!?!?", "I'm not even going to answer that question" etc.

Perpetual Change

Was it a real interview, or him just goofing off on his iPhone?

(I tend to avoid the latter category of videos)

Madman Shepherd

Regarding the BoT lyrics, PetFish apologized and felt horrible and this was brought up recently on this forum and dug up old memories for him so he was a little upset about that.   Probably best that we drop it.

He was goofing around alone,  but actually u could hear someone asking those questions,  but I'm pretty sure he was alone.. Maybe he used somekind of computer software to get those questions asked, but i'm not sure xD
But surely it wasn't a real interview.

Ah. Well still, I can see how that'd be a little rude. I mean, from my perspective, things have been kind of like this:

> MP leaves
> DT pledges to interact with fans
> We barely ever hear anything from DT; when we do, it's very "scripted" and press release-ish
> JR posts a video poking fun of how he's sick of (not) answering things the fans are curious about

Kinda one of my disappointments with the band more recently, but obviously the music is all that counts. I've never really got JR's sense of humor anyway though (which is why I don't follow his pages anymore)

?

Here's a good summary:
Quote from: theseoafs on August 29, 2013, 08:49:09 PM
Basically it was a joke "interview" by Jordan.  He sat in front of his computer screen and played recordings of an "interviewer" asking questions.  I can't remember most of them off the top of my head, but they included "how did LMR get started?" and "what's your favorite song off the new album?" and "will there be an LTE reunion?" and "who does the setlists now that Portnoy's gone?"

The joke is that these questions have been asked many times in interviews before, and that Jordan was sick of answering them, so Jordan jokingly responded to the "interview" questions angrily, calling the "interviewer" mean names and deriding him for not doing any research and not bothering to come up with original questions.

Shadow2222

Okay, now that I know of noxon's "history" with Jordan, I can easily see how that could be taken negatively by him considering his recent interview with Jordan.

I apologize Noxon, and just hope it is a coincidence.

Flacracker

I don't think it was Jordan. Could it have really been Jordan who would lash out like that? Sounds like a MP think to me considering he has an active forum and user base there. Maybe it was Jordan though... I don't know..

I remember it distinctly being Jordan.

QuoteI usually don't get involved in reviewers and their wisdom but the Norweigan review is so snobby that I was grossed out by the attitude. I think that reviewer needs to stop listening to Dream Theater- he obviously is over processing the shit out of it!

Thats my review of the review....

JR

QuoteDude- listen, thanks for your years of support and dedication to the band. The review honestly bothered
me a lot... I probably should have just let it go. I usually would have -and actually usually do...
Sorry my comment about the review bummed you out! From what you wrote, it just seemed like you are so tired of the "usual" Dream Theater solo's- unisons- meter changes- transitions etc that I really wondered why you wanted to listen to a group like ours in the first place.! I think I understand your headspace a little better now that I heard your story. Thanks for explaining it to everyone though..
I guess us artists can be a sensitive bunch. Must have caught me on a bad day!!

Let's all send peaceful, musical -good vibes out to our buddy Noxon and let the negativity become a thing of the past..... Dude man- I got some music you should listen to though. Not one unison to be found!!

Yeah, Blob and Perpetual are correct, here are the direct posts for convenience:

I admit, this line made me chuckle quite a bit!  :lol

I believe we are witnessing Jordans first encounter with the internet and all it's glory. We've all been there once, it's not a pretty discovery.

Viking of the Sagas

I somehow feel this video is now relevant.

MoraWintersoul

Zydar

These videos make me wish there was a band out there called Idiots that made a cover of DT's Surrounded.

Mora, that video froze my Chrome window and I couldn't turn the volume off! It was cutting in over Misunderstood. :lol

Just want to point out that the reason i didn't mention a name in regard to my story was intentional as er made up and have talked at length since... It was more a way to tell the story of how a silly comment like that can cause fans to latch on and be quite nasty as they amplify whatever notion the band member first started.

I get that, but being vague and open the door to speculation is sometimes more harmful than just being forthright, especially when the story is as well known as that one. I mean, look how the thread was already taking a turn to, "oh, I bet it was MP!".
