There really should be one of these. Best song off TOT IMO.

Joshin U

My favorite song they performed live when I saw them. I love the dueling solos.

Appreciated  :tup

Took me a long time to get into this song, but I love it now. Great song and one of the best in the album.

DTFan0789

Wait, wasn't this track off of their 1991 album "Dangerous"? Oh, wait.....

Mosh

Didn't like this when I first heard it, but it's grown on me a bunch since. Some great riffs and melodies. Instrumental section is a bit too much though.

That's actually what originally really caught my attention when I first heard the song. And possibly why it ended up being my favorite song on ToT, tied maybe with As I Am.

But yeah, an excellent song.

mellotron_scratch

The last verses are fantastic, as is the whole song. One of the best off ToT.

Tomislav95

Great great song, my favorite off ToT. One of songs that get me into DT.

I've always loved this song.
Me too. When I first got into DT, ToT was the album I listened to the most and ES always battled with ItNoG for my #1 spot on the album. . ItNoG has stood the test of time a bit better, but Endless Sacrifice probably still just about sneaks into my top 10.One of my favourite instrumental sections and I never fail to air drum the ending  :lol Also loved the screams JLB was throwing in when they were last playing it live.
Whoaaaahh, ohhh, ohhhhh. Whoaaaahh, ohhhhh, ohhhhhh. Waaah, ahhh, haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaowwwwww

Amazing song, tied with In The Name Of God for my favorite song on the album.

The first verses with the clean guitar and piano arrangements is just incredible, paired with some perfect vocal melodies by JLB.

I love the slow swing that MP gives to the first 2 verses...simple, yet genius drumming. The hats and snare are just the slightest bit late, and go so far to add to the emotion.

Awesome choir pad sections by JR too! As always.

Probably in my top 10 all-time favorite DT songs...thanks for the appreciation thread!

+1 on this. I was typing my previous reply before I saw your message...awesome that we both round off our personal top 10's with ES! And also, couldn't agree more about ItNoG being a bit more timeless.  :tup

I think that may be attributed to the fact that I listened to ES SO many times (along with Root Of All Evil and Home, ES was one of my top workout songs) and just kinda overdid it a bit for the time.

Laich21DT

Pretty sweet song. Train of Thought is a very consistent album. ITNOG is my fav on the album, and As I Am is my least fav, but besides that, I'd have a tough time ranking the songs.

As far as Endless Sacrifice, JP and JLB really shine on this one. I love the really heavy riff that kicks off the second half of the song, and James really kicks ass when he's singing "Over the distance, we try to make sense..." etc.

Tom Bombadil

Endless Sacrifice is an excellent song. The chorus is one of my favorites. My only gripe is the instrumental section lasts just a little too long. Other than that it's a top 20 song for me.

The really fast part before the final chorus (starts shortly after the 8-minute mark) is totally awesome and probably the best "moment" on the entire Train of Thought record.  Rest of the song is good, too.  Very good tune. :metal

mikeyd23

Great song! ToT was the first DT album I ever heard, and this song was a stand out for me!  Great verse and chorus vibe and the instrumental is awesome.

Also, when I saw DT live on the ADToE tour, this was one of the best performed songs of the night.  The band and the crowd had so much energy on this one!!

Full Speed

Top tier song for me. Love every second and always has since ToT came out.

The riffs near the end of the instramental leading into the whole "over the distance" section does wonderful things for me.

Love this song, one of my favorites all time!

aprilethereal

Amazing song, James's vocals are great ("iiisolaaaaaateeed"), the instrumental section is one of the very best DT have done. My #3 DT song after Octavarium and Metropolis (ITNOG is #4).

adastra

too many pinch harmonics... (if they even are pinch harmonics  :-[)

aprilethereal

They are not. I think that's called natural harmonics (?). :)

Yeah! U are right! I just listened Endless Sacrifice and noticed that. I'm the worst on guitar theory.

krieger

A very good song! Everytime it comes to "Over the distance... we try to make sense...", I =  :metal

This. A brilliant song, and along with 'In The Name Of God' are album highlights..

BlobVanDam

It's my least favourite song on the album, but as this is an appreciation thread, I have to point that I love the instrumental section, especially the fun little JR bit with all the different sounds, and his solo. :tup

Onno

One of my favourites from ToT, and I believe it was pretty high in my Top 50. Epic song.

wolfking

Ranks in around the middle of TOT for me.  Killer tune.  I laugh remembering when it came out at everyone freaking out about the natural harmonics in the chorus and people saying, "DT have gone all Linkin Park and shit."  Love the chorus though, really something different again for DT.  I do feel James vox are a little strained on this one and would really love to see him pull this off these days.

aprilethereal

I actually feel that ES is one of the best vocal performances by JLB, especially the "Moments wasted, isolated" parts :yarr

kirksnosehair

One of the best songs they've ever written.  Definitely an essential live tune.   :metal

Hell yes!!

I instrumental part is incredible live, and I love the vocal part that follows it.
Quote from: wkiml on June 08, 2012, 09:06:35 AMwould have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Quote from: Stadler on February 08, 2025, 12:49:43 PMI wouldn't argue this.

Yes! I love that part so much. Train of Thought seems a bit underrated, though allmusic.com rates it as one of the best DT albums.

I love the instrumental section that starts at exactly 5:00.

EDIT - The Instrumental section in Honour Thy Father starts at pretty much exactly 5:00 too. Odd. :lol
