I've always wondered if maybe I'm too easily pleased. Out of the 110 Dream Theater tracks I have, I actively enjoy and listen to 91 of them. You guys are discussing things like the snare is pillow-y or something about triggers, and I feel like I'm the little kid at the adult's table. :lol
:lol Believe me, the only DT studio track that I dislike is You Not Me, so you're definitely the only one who likes almost everything. And while I think the new song's great, I always have some criticism. The only DT songs that don't have that are my top 5 probably, and DT is my favourite band by a mile.

Sounds too much like Caught in a Web for my liking.

And there is something wrong with caught in a web???

Please note the colour in which I posted.

Yeah, I don't really get You Not Me. It's not my thing either.

Same here...and for the record, I don´t get the analogy of the chocolate cake guitars either. Where do they get these from? Are we allowed to use this in our professions as well? If that´s the case, I´m doing a ProjectPlan this afternoon and hope it tastes like Sunday breakfast with an extra bacon slice. I wonder what my boss will think of it.

Your boss will be inexplicably hungry.

Actually, I do think the guitars are too loud. JLB's voice deserves more volume also.

BlobVanDam

I don't think the guitars are too loud at all for a metal song, I think JLB is just a bit too low in the mix.

:lol

It's from the first in-studio video, where JP described the ideal guitar sound for the album to be like rich, layered chocolate cake.  Nothing weird or proggy or musical about the metaphor.

This.  Today is a my-birthday amount of excitement for me.

This. I love Labrie's voice, so I think I'd like if he was mixed a bit louder, but it's not a deal-breaker for me by any stretch.

Hard to form a view on the overall sound until I hear the full quality thing, but in terms of what I can hear of the mix - I like it! Definitely a slightly more raw sound, with nice punchy drums. Everything sounds very clear.

Finishing my second listen as I type.  Vocals feel too low in the mix, and the guitar feels very loud. As I have got older, I have began to move further and further away from heavier music, to me, I am not totally keen on the heaviness. Hopefully be better on the CD and with better headphones/speakers. The instrumental section is very wacky, I must say.

At this point, I definitely preferred On the Backs of Angels. Loved that from the first listen.

This feels like it might take time to grow on me and will probably be better when we hear the False Awakening Suite go right into the intro.

It became a rather tired meme from the moment Petrucci uttered the words. We're all now sentenced to hear that description over and over... pretty much for all eternity, I'd imagine.

To be on topic, I am 42 minutes into my abstinence and doing quite well ;D

Zydar

I'm waiting for an actual uncompressed version of the song before I judge the quality from an internet stream.

aXygnus

I think the song is about you being your own enemy. As in, you create problems where there aren't any (due to some circumstance that had nothing to do with you?), you think you're the whole reason the whole world is fucked (or so to say), and you shut down yourself completely from everyone else, thinking they will be better off like that.

My wish is that someday the "goofy" keyboard moments will go away, but it not this day.

Agreed.  In a song this heavy and straight-forward, some of those Jordan-esque keyboard sounds (like after the first chorus) sounded a bit out of place, but we'll see if they grow on me.
Could not disagree more =D great Jordan moments in this song! I really like them!

me7

I think it's a well-crafted, ballsy album opener but the guitar solo reminds me a bit too much of the solo from OTBOA.

F*CK! I'm late for the party!

HERE! CHOCOLATE CAKE FOR EVERYONE ON ME!!! CHEERS!!!!

The stream's quality is quite terrible lol. Pretty cool song though. Better than most of their previous releases. Myung is pretty much invisible.

I love JR's keys in the middle. The little breakdown moment is fabulous.

That's a good point, this does sound compressed. The actual album version should sound better.

RoeDent

1:10-1:50 is my favourite section. The chord progression during the verses.

Dellers

The guitars are too loud (and has slightly too much treble in them) and takes away my attention from everything else completely, the bass is a bit too low in the mix and the snare is too deep (and I like fat snares...). I'd really want to mix DT myself. I'm kinda wondering if JP is responsible for the weird mixes of the last 10 years.

Whatsername

So I've listened to it twice and I'm trying to restrain myself from listening to it more. At this point it's new for me. I'd love for it to stay that way. But I doubt I'll be able to resist not listening to it again until September 24th. We'll see.

Yes, this. But it could be quite useless to judge the sound from an internet stream, as many of you have stated before.

jingle.boy

I like it on first listen.  I have a feeling (hope) this will end up being a mid-tier song from the album... not the best, but not the worst either.  Definitely reminds me of a Fatal Tragedy as someone said.  Opening guitars sound a lot like Bridges in the Sky (the sound, not the riff).  JLB is mixed a little low in some spots.  I too am tired of JR's out-of-place wanking.

Overall, B+ on first impression.  I put it on par with OTBOA.

I love the wah breakdown riff under the keyboard solo.  That's a fantastic touch.

I loved it, I just thought that some of JR's keyboard sounds kind of sounded out of place at times

Anyone able to finish off the lyrics?

Over and over again
I relive the moment
I bury (I'm bearing?) the burden within
Open wounds hidden under my skin

Pain is real as a cut that bleeds
The face I see every time I try to sleep
Staring at me crying

CHORUS
I'm running from the enemy inside
Looking for the life I left behind
These suffocating memories are etched upon my mind
And I can't escape from the enemy inside

I sever myself from the world
and shut down completely
All alone in my own living hell
overcome with irrational fear

Under the weight of the world on my chest
I buckle and break as I try to catch my breath
Tell me I'm not dying

CHORUS
I'm running from the enemy inside
Looking for the life I left behind
These suffocating memories are etched upon my mind
And I can't escape from the enemy inside

I'm ??????
I'm a prisoner of regret
Between the flashbacks and the violent dreams
I am hanging on the edge

Disaster lurks around the bend
Paradise came to an end
And no magic pill
can bring it back again

CHORUS
I'm running from the enemy inside
Looking for the life I left behind
These suffocating memories are etched upon my mind
And I can't escape from the enemy inside

Lyrics sound like they are talking about Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, do we know who penned this song yet?
